Hmm exciting price. I however have lost trust in these external hard drives since mine died (Sony 2Tb) after using for maybe less than 12 times. Much better to go for internal ones.

My 1TB internal drive died within 7 months. I couldn’t go to offline store from where I bought till the end of the first year and that a-hole store owner refused to replace my disk saying it’s out of warranty though I had went to him on the exact last day of the 1 year period.
Later my friend who is also in the same business told me they can easily replace any hard disk till 1.5 years if you bought offline. Lost trust in hard disks. Make multiple copies of whatever is important. I lost all my college pics after 2 internal hard disk failures.

Most internal hard drives have atleast 2 year warranty. Go to their site for warranty and start RMA request. Or directly to their Service centre if you can.

Buy rugged  Hard Drives with thick layers like Transcend or ADATA, try to find out which 2.5" drive they use inside. Avoid Hitachi or Seagate as these have highest average failure rate. Go for Toshiba.

I’ve been using one for over 6 years

Wait avoid Hitachi? Aren’t that the company which has had the most reliable hard drives over the years according to studies? I don’t use Seagate, only WD for internal drives. But I have no idea whether Hitachi drives of late have been giving troubles, but I am pretty sure they were the drive to choose back in 2004/05-2012 time, then Western Digital took over, bought Hitachi’s hard drive segment as far as I know.

I have yet to have an internal drive to crap out on me. Even the first hard disk from my pentium 4 days, bought in 2003, a 40 gb Samsung worked absolutely fine till 2012 (yeah I keep in touch with buyers, I am that good, Lol), then I didn’t bother to ask further. Then even the Seagate Barracuda worked absolutely fine for the period I used it and now the WD Black, absolutely no problem whatsoever.

People don’t research even tiny bit behind these things, that’s why they end up with products like WD Green as their main drive and think WD Blue is the ultimate of hard drives and then face problems afterwards.

PS- If no financial restriction, then one should simply opt for SSDs, totally ditch the mechanical hard drives. But for storage purposes the SSDs are still pretty expensive sad

Both Seagate and WD have similar failure rate. That being said I remember RMAing one Seagate External HDD 3 times to get a working one
All fail within an year or two so don’t store all your important data in one drive

I agree back in those days it might have been true. But things have changed a lot. And just because you or Someone didn’t face failure doesn’t mean some poor guy would not face statistical “bad luck”.

I had purchased Toshiba Canvio Connect II from Amazon earlier where it clearly shows 3 years warranty. But for the Canvio Basics & Advance Amazon shows “No Warranty”. On Flipkart 3 years as expected. Mere error or unauthorized importer?

which model?
was it refurb, resold or you can be sure it was factory shipped?
did you approach the brand and if yes, did they respond anything worthwhile?
i am not a fan of WD or any company they acquire.
but using internals with a chasis has it’s limitations. I’ve used Seagates as external ones though, using adapters.

Yup. Internal HDDs are of higher quality than the ones used in external ones. At least that’s the generally accepted view in the community at large.

It’s a Sony HD-E2 model. Purchased from and well known store here in Calcutta, Velocity Compu System, back in January, 2014, for Rs. 9500 (2TB model). In these five years it was maybe used 10-12 times. Called Sony after sales support and they don’t even know about their own hard disk dept. They were shocked to hear that Sony external hard drives exist even. Obviously then they mentioned that its warranty period is over, which according to them was one year only (in reality its 3 years). But in any case as mine was 5 year old i did not even try to push the matter further. The Sony customer care is nothing but clownish, had it been WD they probably would have asked me to drop the drive to their service centre at least. Getting a replacement or not should have been a matter of further discussion.
