The Joy of Giving
When barter was the main mode of economic life, each individual gave what all he/she could give to the society and society gave all of his/her needs. The sense of belonging, the emotional bonds, the sense of identity made one search, discover and then give what all one could give to the society or to the individual members. The mental atmosphere of those days was totally different. It was basking in natures and social approval.
Suppose all your life you are living only in nature in its raw splendour of flowing and flooding rivers, flora, fauna, mountains, waterfalls, lakes etc.
Then at the micro sub atomic particle level, at the energy level, at the level of atoms, even molecules…they will be flowing into you and also out of you in the sublime and enchanting nature. In fact you cannot find yourself as a separate individual then, if you can actually see into the invisible spectrum. Your being part of nature is a basic fact. You will suffer terribly if you feel separated from nature. You will give yourself away totally so that you become part of that splendour. You live in rapture, with a spontaneous smile. You spontaneously give away everything very happily.
Even when you cannot see the micro activity, still you feel the happiness and enchantment, when nature is allowed to be in its bloom. Your participation in nature as nature is a fact. Without your awareness often you feel your total Subsumation in nature. Giving away yourself is actually life. The joy of giving was actually living. It was natural and spontaneous. You are actually living as nature.
The meaning of income then is the opportunity to give, to serve…, the opportunity itself, is the reward or income. Of course that income cannot be calculated in terms of money, it is totally in the realm of emotions and emotions cannot be quantified.
Today the joy of giving is being felt only occasionally, defended, championed and alas often, it does not last long and one gets dragged into the world of grabbing. When a tree is cut, your micro relationship with that wonderful life form… atoms, and energies, molecules flowing from it to you and from you to the wonderful tree is killed. As you are also cut at the micro level, you try to grasp. After the tree is cut, the entire river polluted, the wonderful winds and breezes change into toxic fumes, what do you do? Like nature you also gasp and gasp and try to catch whatever you can for support. Trying to catch, gradually changes into attempting to grab, steal and ultimately scam.
Instinctively you refuse to accept your basic separation from nature. You doggedly refuse to believe that you are not actually losing, that you are not deceiving yourself, that the so called economic development is not a bluff, and feel instinctively that it is killing nature which includes you. Then you gradually change and self bluff that it is actually development—the dead forests, river, lakes, flora, fauna…the deception becomes comprehensive.
You become the economic man, the grabber whose wants are unlimited, who is busy converting the enchanting nature into economic goods and who spends life competing and striving to get accepted, nature and society no longer recognize you as a part of them. You use anything and everything to grab and get a market, no longer as an innate part in nature but only as a user of just the resource-nature. You do not give, you only grab, and whatever you give you want the highest possible price.
The basic gift of nature—the joy of giving is gone, and you extract maximum publicity when you give, which also is in reality grabbing. You become one of those ‘donate three bananas and make thirty videos about the charity clubs’.

Baptising a drunk
A man is stumbling through the woods totally drunk when he comes upon a preacher baptising people in the river.
The drunk walks into the water and subsequently bumps into the preacher.
The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of booze.
Whereupon he asks the drunk ’Are you ready to find Jesus?
“Yes I am’ replies the drunk, so the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the river.
He pulls him up and asks the drunk, ‘brother have you found Jesus?’
The drunk replies," no, I haven’t ".‘No, I haven’t.’
The preacher, shocked at the answer, dunks him into the water again, but for a bit longer this time and pulls him out of the water and asks again, “have you found Jesus, my brother?’”
The drunk again answers, ‘No, I have not found Jesus.’
By this time the preacher is at his wits end so he dunks the drunk in the water again, but this time he holds him down for about 30 seconds.
When the drunk begins kicking his arms and legs, the preacher pulls him up and….. asks the drunk again, “For the love of god, have you found Jesus?”
The drunk wipes his eyes, catches his breath and says to the preacher,
“Are you sure this is where he fell in?”
Hidayatullah’s wit
As one of the numerous admirers of the late Mr.Justice Hidayatullah, permit me to add that as Chief Justice of India and also as Vice President, Mr.Justice Hidayatullah contributed immensely to the public enlightenment by his comments and observations on different aspects of life. He had the habit of looking sideways and commenting on the seamy side of life with a capacity for wit and humour, rare these days. I present a report from the convocation address at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute when Mr.Hidayatullah was Vice President:
“Why milk, which used to cost about two annas a seer at one stage, is being sold at 30 times that price today?”
The answer to this intricate question was provided by the Vice President. He said, "Formerly, the mother milked the cows, the girls set the milk out in pans to bring the cream to the top and one of the boys sold it carrying it in a hand-cart.
“Now, the department of agriculture is mobilized, the cow-sheds are sterilized, the cows are immunized, the milk is homogenized, the supplies are motorized, the dairies are organized, the milkmen are unionized, the milk product exports are subsidized, the political leaders are energized and the result is that the Indian consumer is victimized.”

When you trek up a mountain the oxygen levels go down. This is nature’s way of telling us that if you want to go higher – it is going to get tougher. So, count life by the height you climb and not the time you spent on the mountain. Life is a wonderful gift of GOD meant to explore by pushing the limits. So when your lung is bursting for oxygen – you know you are climbing higher.
