Pratibha Patil spent Rs 140 cr in air travel expenses as President

Pratibha Patil was the most frequent flyer using IAF planes 255 times as compared to PM Manmohan Singh (108) and vice-president Hamid Ansari (106).

NEW DELHI: While it is no secret that former President Pratibha Patil set new records with her incessant travel, RTI records have revealed another dubious first. Patil travelled twice as many times as the PM and vice-president over the last three years spending over Rs 140 crore in air travel expenses alone.

According to data given by Air Force in response to an RTI filed by activist Subhash Agrawal, IAF’s special aircraft conducted 466 ‘sorties’ between 2008 and 2011. Patil was the most frequent flyer using IAF planes 255 times as compared to PM Manmohan Singh (108) and vice-president Hamid Ansari (106).

The special planes that were acquired between August, 2008 and January, 2009, have cost the exchequer $161,425,567. The three Business Boeing Jets are equipped with advanced self-protection suites, encrypted satellite communication facilities and advanced navigational aids. IAF said the former president visited 18 countries in 10 trips from November, 2008, to October, 2011. The rest of the sorties were domestic trips.

There is some variance in records with RTI responses from the MEA had pegged the cost of Patil’s travel to Rs 205 crore of which Rs 169 crore was incurred by Air India, while the rest included local travel, accommodation and daily allowance.

The destinations included Vietnam, Indonesia, Spain, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan, England, Cyprus, China, Laos, Cambodia, the UAE, Syria, Mauritius, Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Switzerland and Austria.

Her predecessor A P J Abdul Kalam undertook seven trips to 17 countries during his five-year tenure. While, K R Narayanan covered 10 countries in six trips and S D Sharma covered 16 nations in four trips.

Carbon aerogel sets new record as world’s lightest substance

New York: Chinese scientists have created the world’s lightest substance – a material so insubstantial that it can perch on the petals of a delicate flower without crushing them.

A cubic centimeter of the record-setting stuff, carbon aerogel, has a mass of only 0.16 milligram, according to a new study by scientists at Zhejiang University.

That’s 12 percent lighter than an equal volume of the previous record-holder, a substance known as aerographite.

If the average human body were made entirely of carbon aerogel instead of flesh and bone, it would weigh only a quarter-pound.

Lightweight substances can have some pretty heavy-duty applications, and that certainly seems to be the case here.

Durable and highly elastic, carbon aerogel may become a useful material in advanced electronics and a big player in pollution control, study co-author Dr. Chao Gao, a professor of polymer science and engineering at the university, told the Huffington Post in an email.

Carbon aerogel can absorb up to 900 times its weight in liquid, he said.

Dr. Gao’s team started with a semi-solid gel of carbon nanotubes and graphene and then used a freeze-drying process to convert it to a solid.

Unlike earlier-generation ultralight materials, this new substance is “quite easy to make,” according to Gao.

Expert Advices for Safety of Women
by: “Jaganathanmadhavan” jaganathanmadhava
n

1) What should a woman do if she finds herself alone in the company of a strange male as she prepares to enter a lift in a high-rise apartment late at night? Experts Say: Enter the lift. If you need to reach the 13th floor, press all the buttons up to your destination. No one will dare attack you in a lift that stops on every floor. 2) What to do if a stranger tries to attack you when you are alone in your house, run into the kitchen. Experts Say: You alone know where the chili powder and turmeric are kept. And where the knives and plates are. All these can be turned into deadly weapons. If nothing else, start throwing plates and utensils all over. Let them break. Scream. Remember that noise is the greatest enemy of a molester. He does not want to be caught. 3} Taking an Auto or Taxi at Night. Experts Say: Before getting into an auto at night, note down its registration number. Then use the mobile to call your family or friend and pass on the details to them in the language the driver understands .Even if no one answers your call, pretend you are in a conversation. The driver now knows someone has his details and he will be in serious trouble if anything goes wrong. He is now bound to take you home safe and sound. A potential attacker is now your de facto protector! 4}What if the driver turns into a street he is not supposed to – and you feel you are entering a danger zone? Experts Say: Use the handle of your purse or your stole (dupatta) to wrap around his neck and pull him back. Within seconds, he will feel choked and helpless. In case you don’t have a purse or stole just pull him back by his collar. The top button of his shirt would then do the same trick. 5} If you are stalked at night. Expert Say: enter a shop or a house and explain your predicament. If it is night and shops are not open, go inside an ATM box. ATM centers always have security guards. They are also monitored by close circuit television. Fearing identification, no one will dare attack you. After all, being mentally alert is the greatest weapon you can ever have. Please spread it to all those women u care & spread awareness as dis is d least we can do for a social & moral cause and fr d safety of women.

*Brain Lapses Are Normal – Most of the Time

Ron White

Multi-tasking and switching from one job to another is a recipe for disaster. Our brain is not capable of handling too many functions at once or it won’t be able to sort and process memory as well as it needs to. That’s not to say our brain can’t work fast, but when you put it into overdrive in order to accomplish more than one thing at a time, you are not giving it the opportunity to sort and process as it should. For that reason, you are not allowing it to put things into memory as it should.

Occasional memory lapses are not signs of impending dementia. The majority of the time it’s nothing to worry about. Everyone has a memory lapse or slip now and then. As we get older we tend to experience more of them, and we start to think we are experiencing signs of early onset dementia.

Most doctors will tell you the most often asked questions they get concern lapses in memory and the questions usually start as early as 30! If you think about it, you are surrounded with all kinds of noises and distractions that can throw anyone off track and not allow a solid memory to form. It’s no wonder some things fall through the memory cracks.

Webster’s Dictionary defines memory as “the mental capacity or faculty of retaining or recalling facts, events, impressions or previous experiences.” Neuroscientists see memory from different aspects:

· · Short-Term Memory:
remembering something for a brief period of time,
such as the price of an item until you pay for it
· · Recent Memory:
information you just learned, or day-to-day activity
· · Sensory Memory:
recalling what you see, smell, taste, touch and hear
· · Long-Term Memory:
distant memories and experiences
· · Declarative Memory:
basic knowledge skills, like vocabulary words and facts
· · Procedural Memory:
motor skills, chewing, walking or riding a bicycle
· · Musical Memory:
although not one of the basic memory groups, more and more research indicates musical memory, or the portion of your brain that retains the musical notes or sounds you hear, is an entirely different portion of the brain

A doctor once told a friend who was worried about this problem that your brain is just discarding information that you don’t need to make room for things you are currently learning, kind of like the trash bin in your computer. In other words, when your memory gets too full you need to dump things that are slowing it down. Now, I don’t know if that’s a great analogy, but it worked for my friend. Scientists call this “pruning,” which is much the same as what you do with your bushes to take out the dead or weak branches to strengthen the other parts. Pruning your memory to strengthen the connections is just another way of “spring cleaning” your brain.

There are numerous outside influences that have an effect on our memory, like hormonal imbalance (such as women going through menopause), high blood pressure, low thyroid, diabetes, too much alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of sleep, or medications that you are taking.

Although it may seem the statistics are higher than this, from 1% – 26% of Americans aged 65 or older will suffer serious memory decline, also known as mild cognitive impairment. This is a transitional phase in aging, and although momentary lapses can become more frequent, it does not impair judgment, nor mean there will be permanent and declining problems.

Studies have suggested that approximately 10% of those with a specific form of memory-related MCI go on to develop some form of dementia, Alzheimer’s (AD) being the most common. It is believed that less than 10% of people 65 and over will actually develop full-blown AD, and 47% of those over 85 probably can.

The good new is studies have shown that the use of memory training and memory techniques can help to strengthen the brain cells for anyone. For those who are experiencing early onset dementia or even those who are in mid-cycle, memory training and brain games have been shown to prolong the loss of memory or total incapacitation from dementia.
