Learning From Three Worlds

Abhijit Bhaduri

If something bothered you enough to wake you up at 2 am, would you have someone you could talk to, whose counsel you could trust, who would listen to you and keep your secret safe?

How many such friends do you have?

When you make plans to celebrate a major milestone in your life, say your wedding, how many friends do you call for the celebration? If you are on Facebook, how many friends do you have there?

Chances are, you have just described the three categories of friends. I have asked these questions to several groups of friends and colleagues.

The word ‘friend’ has undergone a big shift. Most count the number of close friends in single digits. The number of “friends” on Facebook is the largest. The number we would call for a celebration is somewhere in between.

We all live in three worlds simultaneously. The virtual world of friends we make on the net, the friends we keep in touch with in the physical world and the handful of friends we trust that make up our inner world. If the three definitions coincide, so will the numbers.

I have often asked groups of people how they would draw a picture to represent the word “learn”. Most draw a book or a teacher in a classroom with a blackboard. This drawing represents the inner world’s definition of what makes us learn. The inner world is within our control. The school in the physical world needs access to resources someone else may control.

The course content in most schools and colleges is slow to change. At a gathering of management educators, the dean of a well-known college lamented that it takes them three to four years to design the curriculum of a new subject, design assessments and find professors who can offer it to students.

That often makes the content obsolete even before it has been taught. The basic textbook used in marketing by Philip Kotler has remained unchanged over the past 30 years. That may be testimony to how timeless the book is. Then again it could mean how long it takes the physical world to change. In the virtual world, we can learn from many sources. Anyone with a mobile phone and a net connection can access free content that we can use to learn anything from anyone around the world.

The Massive Open Online Courses make it possible for anyone to take a course offered by some of the best known Ivy League professors in any subject for free.

Twitter is my favourite source of learning. It lets me “follow” the smartest people who are continuously sharing everything from breaking news to ideas, insights and treasure troves of information. The virtual world makes learning “whenever, wherever and whomever”.

We may not always be able to influence the physical world. Your employer may need to nominate you to a class that you have waited for the past two years to join. That involves training and travel budgets.

If we only value learning in our inner world, we will miss out the continuous learning that the connected world offers. We will wait to learn from experts and not value the wisdom of the novice.

In a world that is changing constantly, the inner world is often a comfort zone because it is familiar and remains unchanged. The virtual world and physical world are often what we cannot influence readily.

Though it is easier to influence our inner world, it is often the slowest to change. The virtual world can often provide us resources that we may be denied in the physical world. All we need is to do is to decide to connect our inner world occasionally to the virtual world.

MONEY IS YOURS BUT RESOURCES BELONG TO THE SOCIETY.”

Germany is a highly industrialized country.

In such a country, many will think its people

lead a luxurious life.

When I arrived at Hamburg , my colleagues walked into the restaurant, we

noticed that a lot of tables were empty. There was a table where a young couple was having their

meal. There were only two dishes and two cans of beer on the table. I wondered if such simple meal

could be romantic, and whether the girl will leave this stingy guy.

There were a few old ladies on

another table. When a dish is served, the waiter would distribute the food for them, and they

would finish every bit of the food on their plates.

As we were hungry, our local colleague ordered

more food for us.When we left, there was still about one third of un-consumed food on the table.

When we were leaving the restaurant, the old ladies spoke to us in English, we understood that

they were unhappy about us wasting so much food.

“We paid for our food, it is none of your business

how much food we left behind," my colleague told the old ladies.

The old ladies were furious. One

of them immediately took her hand phone out and made a call to someone. After a while, a man in

uniform from Social Security organisation arrived. Upon knowing what the dispute was, he issued

us a 50 Euro fine. We all kept quiet.

The officer informed us in a stern voice,
ORDER WHAT YOU CAN

CONSUME, MONEY IS YOURS BUT RESOURCES BELONG TO THE SOCIETY. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS IN THE WORLD

WHO ARE FACING SHORTAGE OF RESOURCES. YOU HAVE NO REASON TO WASTE RESOURCES."

The mindset of

people of this rich country put us to shame. WE REALLY NEED TO REFLECT ON THIS. We are from a

country which is not very rich in resources.
To save face, we order large quantity and also waste

food when we give others a treat.

MONEY IS YOURS BUT RESOURCES BELONG TO THE SOCIETY.”

7 PRINCIPLES OF EAGLES

  • PRINCIPLE 1

Eagles fly alone at high altitude and not with sparrows or other small birds. No other bird can get to the height of the eagle. Stay away from sparrows and ravens.

Eagles fly with Eagles

  • PRINCIPLE 2

Eagles have strong vision. They have the ability to focus on something up to five kilometers away. When an eagle sites his prey, he narrows his focus on it and set out to get it. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.

Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacle and you will succeed.

  • PRINCIPLE 3

Eagles do not eat dead things. They feed only on fresh prey. Vultures eat dead animals, but eagles will not.

Be careful with what you feed your eyes and ears with, especially in movies and on TV. Steer clear of outdated and old information. Always do your research well.

  • PRINCIPLE 4

Eagles love the storm. When clouds gather, the eagles get excited. The eagle uses the storm’s wind to lift it higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagles uses the raging storm to lift him above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the leaves and branches of the trees.

We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers relish challenges and use them profitably.

  • PRINCIPLE 5

The Eagle tests before it trusts. When a female eagle meets a male and they want to mate, she flies down to earth with the male pursuing her and she picks a twig. She flies back into the air with the male pursuing her.

Once she has reached a height high enough for her, she lets the twig fall to the ground and watches it as it falls. The male chases after the twig. The faster it falls, the faster he chases it. He has to catch it before it falls to the ground. He then brings it back to the female eagle.

The female eagle grabs the twig and flies to a higher altitude and then drops the twig for the male to chase. This goes on for hours, with the height increasing until the female eagle is assured that the male eagle has mastered the art of catching the twig which shows commitment. Then and only then, will she allow him to mate with her.

Whether in private life or in business, one should test commitment of people intended for partnership.

  • PRINCIPLE 6

When ready to lay eggs, the female and male eagle identify a place very high on a cliff where no predators can reach. The male flies to earth and picks thorns and lays them on the crevice of the cliff, then flies to earth again to collect twigs which he lays in the intended nest. He flies back to earth and picks thorns laying them on top of the twigs. He flies back to earth and picks soft grass to cover the thorns. When this first layering is complete the male eagle runs back to earth and picks more thorns, lays them on the nest; runs back to get grass it on top of the thorns, then plucks his feathers to complete the nest. The thorns on the outside of the nest protect it from possible intruders. Both male and female eagles participate in raising the eagle family. She lays the eggs and protects them; he builds the nest and hunts. During the time of training the young ones to fly, the mother eagle throws the eaglets out of the nest. Because they are scared, they jump into the nest again.

Next, she throws them out and then takes off the soft layers of the nest, leaving the thorns bare When the scared eaglets again jump into the nest, they are pricked by thorns. Shrieking and bleeding they jump out again this time wondering why the mother and father who love them so much are torturing them. Next, mother eagle pushes them off the cliff into the air. As they shriek in fear, father eagle flies out and catches them up on his back before they fall and brings them back to the cliff. This goes on for sometime until they start flapping their wings. They get excited at this new found knowledge that they can fly.

The preparation of the nest teaches us to prepare for changes; The preparation for the family teaches us that active participation of both partners leads to success; The being pricked by the thorns tells us that sometimes being too comfortable where we are may result into our not experiencing life, not progressing and not learning at all. The thorns of life come to teach us that we need to grow, get out of the nest and live on. We may not know it but the seemingly comfortable and safe haven may have thorns.

The people who love us do not let us languish in sloth but push us hard to grow and prosper. Even in their seemingly bad actions they have good intentions for us.

  • PRINCIPLE 7

When an Eagle grows old, his feathers become weak and cannot take him as fast as he should. When he feels weak and about to die, he retires to a place far away in the rocks. While there, he plucks out every feather on his body until he is completely bare. He stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, then he can come out.

We occasionally need to shed off old habits items that burden us without adding to our lives.

We need the mind’s clarity, but intelligence requires a balance that includes emotional clarity too. Common sense rules, but is not too common, and requires experience, discernment, questioning, and a balance of the mental and emotional. Everyone desires as much love as they can imagine, yet rarely does anyone get it through life, leaving them ‘bankrupt in love energy’, love poor, or ‘loveless’. Brilliant or not, most are left with a mind that lacks the energy of a positive balance of the emotional and spiritual qualities of full working order. Satisfaction is seemingly always left leaving room for completion.

Inner peace while driving through life rarely comes naturally, but like the air in life, is just there but hidden and waiting for your letting go, and moving upward into the light of your real self unencumbered by the negatives of the past.

Keeping an open, inquisitive, non judgmental, discerning mind coupled with an open heart that has no fears of intimacy is a conscious standard that will be a healthy, well rounded being to attract likewise. The downside of that openness is that the vast majority of others settle on a ‘partial open eclipse of the mind and heart’, and likely will consume or vampire that energy from you.

Letting go of mind and heart attachments is a road to the paradise within, but that doesn’t happen with just a light conviction that gets lost in memory while doing little to make it happen in the ensuing days, weeks, months, or even the rest of your life. Go deeper in intimacy, but mindful that you can meet the barriers of your partner which will bring up frustration, angers, hopelessness, and you name it. Love without the built in ‘life preserver’ of deep self love will be like diving into the ocean not being able to swim or finding any ‘shore’. At this point, moving into as much of life and love as positively as possible can itself become a prayer and a meditation. To supplement that journey alone, set aside times of meditation on a continuing basis that will aid the ease of letting go and disconnecting from negatives, creating the opening of mind and heart totally.

Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious lifestyle, was neither happy nor content. One day, he came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked. This fascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Kingdom, unhappy and gloomy, while a lowly servant was so joyous. The King asked the servant, ‘Why are you so happy?’ The man replied, ‘Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my family and I don’t need too much — just a roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies.’

The king was not satisfied with that reply. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the King’s woes and the servant’s story, the advisor said, ‘Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has not been made part of The 99 Club.’ ‘The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?’ the King inquired. The advisor replied, ‘Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, let’s place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant’s doorstep.’

Next day when the servant saw the bag, he picked it up and took it in. When he opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy… So many gold coins! He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. ‘What could’ve happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins!’ he wondered. He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted, he decided that he would have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection. And from that day, the servant’s life was changed. He was overworked, horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make that 100th coin. He stopped singing while he worked.

Witnessing this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his advisor’s help, the advisor said, ‘Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club…’ He continued, ‘The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough to be happy but are never contented, because they’re always yearning and striving for that extra one, telling themselves: ‘Let me get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life.’

We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we’re given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a price for our growing greed and desires. That’s what joining The 99 Club is all about

  • There is no dedicatory block upon the lintel to indicate to which deity the initial dedication was for.
  • The Shiva linga in the shrine appears to be a later addition after the original deity in the sanctum was removed
