The release of PM Narendra Modi, a biopic on the prime minister, has been postponed till further notice, its producer Sandip Ssingh said on Thursday.

‘This is to confirm, our film PM Narendra Modi is not releasing on 5th April. Will update soon,’ Ssingh posted on Twitter.

The Congress had complained to the Election Commission over the release of the film on April 5, just a week before the first phase of polls were to begin.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, alleged the film will give undue advantage to the Bharatiya Janata Party in electioneering and its release should be deferred till the elections are over. — PTI

Omung Kumar, director of film PM Narendra Modi tweets that the biopic will release on April 11.

‘Thank you everyone for your support. Here’s the date when our film PM Narendra Modi will be releasing. 11th April. Jai hind,’ the tweet said.

The release of the biopic, which was supposed to be released today, was deferred indefinitely yesterday, its producer Sandip Ssingh had said.

The Election Commission was expeted to take a final call on the release of the movie today.

The Opposition raised the pitch for deferring the release of the film by citing poll code violation.

Sources in the Central Board of Film Certification said the film was yet to get a clearance.

The biopic was originally set to release on April 12, but its producers had advanced it by a week, claiming ‘public demand’. — with ANI inputs

Trailer will be back + the movie
This s gonna happen, next couple of days ::::
EC Watches the film, suggests some cuts
Or may even ask CBFC to recertify with the desired cuts
And the movie releases within a week from ECs approval most probably this month itself (My Guess is April 27)
Nothing new to EC, they did it before and they will do it again

EC watches PM Modi film, verdict soon: Acting on the directions of the Supreme Court, officials of the Election Commission on Wednesday watched a special screening of biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A total of seven officials of a committee set up for the purpose were present for the screening of the biopic titled ‘PM Narendra Modi’. The apex court had directed the EC to watch the full biopic and take an informed decision on banning its pan India release by April 19.

The ECI officials who watched the screening included Deputy Commissioner Umesh Sinha, Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Saxena, one senior deputy Election Commissioner, three Director General level officers. Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh was also present at the screening.

A top court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, comprising Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, asked the EC to watch the Narendra Modi biopic and submit its view to the court by April 22 in a sealed cover.

On April 12, the makers of the Vivek Oberoi-starrer had moved the apex court, challenging the stay of the film’s release. The producer of the film, Sandip Singh, had said that the poll panel banned the movie without watching it.

The film was scheduled to release on April 11, coinciding with the commencement of the Lok Sabha elections in the country. However, on April 10, the EC stayed the release of the biopic till national elections culminate, stating that the film disturbs the level-playing field.

On April 9, the apex court had dismissed a plea on the release of the film and said that the responsibility will lie on the shoulders of the EC to decide whether the film is in violation of the model code of conduct. — ANI

EC likely to continue ban on Modi biopic:

The Election Commission is learnt to have finalised its stand on whether the ban imposed by it on the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi should continue.

Officials, drawn from the poll panel’s model code and legal divisions, had on Wednesday watched the biopic on the directions of the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the producers had put forth their views before the Commission.

The EC was to inform the top court of its stand on Friday. But the court’s registry was closed on account of Good Friday.

Though there was no official word on the issue, sources in the know said the view, to be submitted to the Supreme Court in a sealed envelope, “may not digress” from its earlier order.

The sealed envelope could be submitted on Saturday

The Supreme Court had on Monday directed the commission to watch the full biopic on Modi and take an informed decision on banning its pan India release by April 19.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also directed the poll panel to submit its decision to the court in a sealed cover and said it will consider the matter on April 22.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the film’s producers, who challenged the EC’s ban on its release, said the poll panel banned it just by watching the promo and did not watch the full movie.

The EC had on Wednesday last banned the screening of the biopic during the current poll period, saying any such film that subserves the purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in electronic media.

Acting on complaints by political parties, including the Congress, the poll panel had asserted that any biopic material with the potential to disturb the level playing field should not be displayed in areas where Model Code of Conduct was in force.

The Supreme Court Friday refused to interfere with the Election Commission’s order banning release of the biopic on PM Narendra Modi until May 19.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it was not inclined to entertain the application filed by producers of biopic challenging the EC’s order.

“What survives in this now?” the bench, also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, said. The counsel, appearing for producers, told the bench that the EC’s order is contrary to the clearance given to the movie by the Central Board of Film Certification.

“The issue is whether the movie can be exhibited at this time. The Election Commission has taken a decision. We are not inclined to entertain this,” the bench said. — PTI
