Did you know that making UPI payments doesn't usually require an internet connection? One of the most major disadvantages of online purchases was that they required a smartphone and an internet connection. This has worked as a barrier to online payment transactions becoming the norm in India, and it continues to do so even as the country makes a strong attempt to embrace digital payments.

While most of us have embraced the use of Smartphones, we still sometimes struggle with bad internet connections. As the ability of a UPI user to make UPI payments is usually affected by bad internet, causing the process to be disrupted. However, there is an offline option for making UPI payments.

With the introduction of Bhim UPI payments, the USSD infrastructure was improved to allow cashless transactions without the use of smartphones or active Internet connections. The Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) mobile banking platform can be used by following this easy step.

Steps to make Offline UPI Payment without Internet via USSD

So, let's get started on how to pay online without having access to the internet. There are a few things you'll need to pay for before starting to use UPI without the internet. Verify that your phone number is linked to your bank account, also that you have signed up for the UPI.

Step 1 – Open the dialler on your phone and enter "*99#" and click on the Call button.

Step 2 – Select from the Menu Screen offering 7 options which are: Send Money, Request Money, Check Balance, My Profile, Pending Requests, Transactions, UPI Pin.

Step 3 – Choose the send money option by typing 1

Step 4 – You will be Prompt by methods of sending money to the recipient which are Mobile Number, Payment address, Saved beneficiary, IFSC and Account No.

Step 5 – Fill in the required details and amount you want to send to the recipient (minimum Re 1 and maximum Rs 20,000)

Step 6 – Once done enter your UPI PIN and press send. Once it is sent it will ask you to save the recipient for future use or exit.

Step 7 – Your UPI Transaction will be completed without Internet

UPI doesn’t work without internet.
It’s USSD *99# that works on any network; without internet.
However that requires you UPI PIN to authenticate the transaction(s) but that doesn’t mean UPI works without internet.

@chunnumunnuannu You can enter UPI PIN on USSD menu to complete your transaction. No need of Internet connection. @chunnumunnuannu Wrong, UPI is not dependent on Internet as Mobile Service Providers can also send USSD request to it. UPI is integrated with 5 different services besides the QR Code and Google Pay Services, there is also *99#, Fingerprint based Aadhaar authentication and such services available in many villages
