Received a fraudulent call claiming that my FedEx package has been cancelled

A few minutes ago I received a fraudulent call with automated voice saying that my FedEx package has been cancelled and to know more details "press 1". I did press 1 and a fellow picked up and asked me to verify my phone number (since they already had my number I didn't find it necessary to decline) and he said that he was speaking from FedEx Mumbai office and that someone has used my name & number (Yes, they knew my.name too) to ship a package containing illegal goods like laptops, smartphones and LSD (the drug) from Mumbai to Iran and that it ihas been intercepted and seized by the customs. I asked to speak to his manager who said the same thing and before I could give him an earful the call disconnected.

I tried calling back the number ( +918127982603) but now it says "Incoming call is not available on this number. It'll resume post recharge"

Should I take this seriously? What should I do and who do I report this to?

Last week, I received a similar call (a recorded voice, using some text to voice engine) saying all telephone connections in your name will be blocked in the next hour. Press some buttons to continue.

Why isn't the Department of Telecom not able to stop these people?

I also received a call Today saying "Your FedEx parcel has been returned" and press 1 for more details. I disconnected the call. If you are not expecting any FedEx courier, then better to disconnect the call.

Lot of videos are there in YouTube regarding this fake FedEx call which is a big scam going on.

I'm still trying to understand how this scam works. Are they banking on the possibility that they might come across a genuine target who has actually "sent a package from the courier service they are naming and they could scam him/her by asking for monetary compensation to get out of trouble? The chances of coming across such a target is slim to none. The amount of hard work they have to do by making such cold calls to trap a victim is enormous. Finding a legitimate job and earning honestly looks more easy.

How the Scam Works

The fraud begins with a phone call from someone claiming to be from FedEx customer service. The caller informs the victim that a package linked to their Aadhaar number has been intercepted because it allegedly contains illegal items. Despite the victim not knowing such a package, the scammer insists it was dispatched from Mumbai and is now stuck in customs due to the discovery of narcotics among the items.

To escalate the sense of urgency, the scammer claims the call will be transferred to the Mumbai Police Cyber Cell. Victims might then receive a call from an individual posing as a police officer, who demands sensitive information like Aadhaar and PAN card details. The scammer exploits fears of legal repercussions and money laundering accusations to lure the victim into transferring money, promising a swift refund which, of course, never happens.

In total, over Rs 5 crore has been lost to these scammers in Bengaluru alone, where the police have registered 163 cases related to this type of cyber scam in 2023 alone, with 48 of these cases in the South-East division.

A very regular and one of the most popular scams. They have improved their level by making these calls from VoIP by computers and displaying fake caller IDs or sometimes international numbers. Obviously the incoming mobile number is fake, so won't connect if you call back. Even if it connects by chance, the caller will say he never made any call.

However their language and English grammar still resembles the chhapris of Jharkhand and Bihar, which is the easiest ways to identify their genuineness.

This scammer had a heavy South Indian accent  and was fluent in English. His manager/supervisor however spoke broken English and couldn't keep his pronouns straight

I received similar kind of call few days ago.

Since I made some online purchases, I thought maybe they were shipped through FedEx and pressed 1.

It was connecting but I was not in mood of any human interaction so I disconnected. Didn't realised it was fraud. 😧

Damn they are upping their game day by day.

PS: No-one is safe from these scamsters, not even the ones who are tech-savvy and well informed.

Today I got call in morning with automated voice saying fedex, I disconnected call immediately. These automated calls are no use at all, never attend the calls.

Only bank calls you need to attend to confirm transactions.
