HYDERABAD: Legal metrology officials raided the godown of the online firm Naaptol.com in Bowenpally and seized Rs 1.26 crore worth goods on Wednesday.
Acting on a specific complaint, legal metrology officials raided Pentagon Logistix Pvt Limited godown in Bowenpally and seized 2,430 packages of 55 different commodities, including various electronic goods like laptops, cameras, home appliances and toiletries worth Rs 1.26 crore.
According to legal metrology controller R P Thakur, Pentagon Logistix is a stock point of online product sale company ‘Naaptol.com’. During the raid, the sleuths realized that majority of the goods available at the godown was imported from China for a very cheap price.
“In newspaper ads, the company claims that they will be selling a product worth Rs 2,000 for just Rs 500, where as the actual price of the product would be not more than Rs 200,” a legal metrology official said.
The management of Pentagon Logistix has been replacing original price tags with their own, jacking up the price. They were also not mentioning the details of the product manufacturer and importer.
The legal metrology officials have booked 54 cases against ‘Naaptol.com’ and Pentagon Logistix. During the surprise checks, about Rs 1.26 crore worth property was seized
The legal metrology sleuths would also serve notices on 12 vendors, including Wespro, Alpha Radio, Studio XLNC, Online Trading Co, Techno Bazaar Sales Corporation, Titan Enterprises, Mahavir Enterprises, Sankar Tele Ventures, Wespro Marketing, Sagene Corporation, SRP, Megan IMpex, who have been supplying products to the Naaptol.com.

Many material comes illegal , anything chinese sells on ebay or any website coming from china without any customs, for example car vaccum cleaner.
its good action taken on naatol, however what is legal metrology dept, ? never heard.
seems something related to standard and metric system of weighing, measurement etc.

The Department of Legal Metrology is engaged in regulating use of correct weighing and measuring instruments in production, trade and commerce to ensure that exact weight, measure and number of any commodity is provided to any customer as contracted for, or paid for by him. It also safeguards consumer’s interest by ensuring mandatory declarations on packaged commodities.
The Department carries out regular/surprise inspections in markets, fair price shops, kerosene oil depots, petrol pumps, gas agencies and other public outlets to check whether measuring and weighing units bear valid verification stamp and deliver correct weight, measure or volume of commodities to consumers. Inspections are also conducted on receipt of complaint from any source either in writing or telephonically. Action for short measurement, use of defective and non-standard weights and measures is taken as provided for in relevant laws and rules.
The Department undertakes verification of auto-rickshaws/taxi fare meters, tank lorries, and petrol dispensing units. It also conducts regular checking of fare meters of auto rickshaw/ taxies on road in association with Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Authority and the Traffic Police.
Packaged commodities are regularly inspected to see whether the mandatory declarations such as complete name and address of the manufacturer/packer/ importer, month and year of packing/import, common or generic name of the commodity, net contents and the sale price of the package (Maximum Retail Price, inclusive of all taxes) are printed on such packages and declaration printed on them conform to the contents of the package.
This department deals with implementation of following Acts and Rules.
- The Standards of Weights & Measures Act 1976
The Standards of Weights & Measures (Enf) Act 1985
The A.P.Standards of Weights & Measures Enforcement Rules 1986
The Standards of Weights & Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules,1977
The Standards of Weights & Measures (General) Rules, 1987
Put simply, this department has to check that all the packaged commodities like rice, edible oils, pulses, meat, poultry, vegetables, fruits, biscuits, breads, soaps, tooth pastes, cosmetic items, masala powders and the items sold in volume like packaged milk, water, oils, paints, and whether they are supplied to the consumer in the correct weight or volume. For this purpose, the department makes regular inspections and those who violate the laws are prosecuted. The Controller who is assisted by the Deputy Controller, Assistant Controller, District Inspector and Inspector, Legal Metrology are vested with the powers in enforcing the provisions of the different Acts and Rules. The department has a cadre strength of 99 Inspectors, 46 District Inspectors, 18 Assistant Controllers and 7 Deputy Controllers spread all over the state.
