Query regarding extending C Drive / OS Drive ! :(

Hello Technical people,

I need a huge help from you guys. I have found few solutions on Internet but I’m quite scared to lose any data.

Here’s the thing: Two years ago I have purchased a disassembled computer and assembled them. I had purchased 1 TB HDD. While assigning the space for each drive at the time of installation of the OS, I mistakenly chose 40GB for C Drive which is very less. Initially I assumed 40GB is too high but later came to know that it is very less.

For installation of the OS itself, it consumed lot of space so I’m unable to install any software. Most of the programs, I have installed on my D Drive which has lot of space but there are few specific software which has to be installed on the OS drive. So I’m not sure how to extend the space in C drive.

I have read several solutions like moving all the data to an External HDD and then re-install the OS which is a huge time consuming. Also, it is a hectic to reinstall the software which I have already installed on D drive. But still, I’m in the process of moving all the Audio, Video and jpeg files to my recently purchased External HDD.

So, please let me know if there is any simple solution to extend the space of C drive without losing the data. Or at least without losing the Programs which I have installed on D drive. I can completely move all the movies and songs to External drive but not these.

Here is the snapshot:
https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/395943/medium/1897643Capture0de09.jpg?1481015256

I am not Technically sound, so please explain in English.

Thank you so much.

I won’t recommend extending the OS Drive instead you should format it as extending the physical drive sometimes gives error while you boot the next time after the extension process;
as you have a hard drive you may create an .iso and then do the next (which you do not want to)
so next would be to download http://download3.easeus.com/free/e…xe and do the needful or http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-m…

firstly make a usb ubuntu bootable pendrive. boot the pentrive and try ubuntu without installation. open gparted utility. you dont mention you primary or logical drive. let us assume all are primary. to extend c drive to have to delete drive d and c so that both will combinne and make new c and d according to need. no need to do anything with e
now assume c is primart and d and e is logical. then u have to delete all the partition.

if u try to directly try resize the d drive then this space cannot combine with c . so you have to delete c and d drive .

this is a good idea but you missed that he doesn’t want to do time consuming task because I am sure he won’t have a ubuntu bootable usb stick and for that he has to create an USB bootable device first and secondly he says he’s not into much of computers won’t suggest him this

if he dont want to use ubuntu then there is also a gpgarted live bootable utility also

U can use Windows 7 built in Disk Management utility to resize/expand ur C drive. Its the safest method. Also u can use Easeus for this as well.

Deal Newbie Deal Newbie

Go to run and type diskmgmt.msc and go to disk management. There u can add the amount of space u want to add to c drive. But before that u need to take some amount of space from the other drive and format that drive and add to the c drive. If you face any prob keep a msg i vil help you

The simplest steps which I understood are provided by Dr Anshuman and Sainikith. Thank you so much for both of you. However, here is the issue which I’m facing..:-{

I was already in the process of moving all the data from my D and E drives to External drive. Here is the screenshot now:
https://i.imgur.com/T0zeg8L.jpg

Long ago, I tried these steps but did not know what to do so I left as it is in the middle. After shrinking the D Drive, I’m still unable to get the ‘Expand volume’ option:
https://i.imgur.com/9oAGI9W.jpg

Even in Easeus, I’m unable to get the option to extend the C Drive even though I have an unallocated drive:

  • If I format, do I have to use the DVD and reinstall the complete OS or just clear all the data and rearrange the space?
  • I have also installed Ubutu OS. The installation files are in the D Drive and not C.

Thanks in Advance guys.

The problem is you have created unallocated space after D-drive instead of creating unallocated space before it. You probably used the Windows disk management tool (diskmgmt.msc) which doesn’t let you specify where to create the unallocated space.

Anyway, you can solve this minor issue via Easeus pretty easily. Right click on D-drive, select the resize option. Put the amount of space you want to extend C-drive with in the “Unallocated Space Before” box and put 0 in the “Unallocated Space After” box. This will put the unallocated space in the correct position, i.e. between C and D drives. You will then be able to extend the C-drive via Easeus.

yep try to unallocate space from d drive in the “unallocated space before” section

You don’t need to format. If you follow what I suggested above, you will be able to successfully extend your C-drive, aka the OS partition.

I don’t have the proper context on why you are mixing Ubuntu installation in a thread about resizing Windows partitions, so I am going to ignore that.

Horribly complicated and unwieldy advice to solve such a simple problem, especially considering that @Jairaj has clearly mentioned he is not a techie. Thanks to you, @Jairaj has probably wasted hours and accomplished nothing! https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_evil.gif

Reminds me of a similar case. Read the problem in the first post and definitely see my last response to understand how this is related: http://www.desidime.com/forums/dost-and-dimes/t...

Update: OMG! Just realized that it’s the same guy (@ad4190) who gave bad advice in the other thread as well. Some people never learn. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif
Can somebody with negative Karma power please make this guy a newbie again?

The answer is yes. As a matter of fact, Windows already does this for you in the background – it’s called virtual or paged memory. If your computer is acting slow because of lack of RAM, you can manually extend the virtual memory. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/chan…

But keep in mind that hard disk is about 1 lakh times slower than RAM. So, although this will help keep your computer from not hanging completely, I recommend you to add more RAM to fix the real problem.

By the way, because of this speed difference between RAM and hard drives, people used to (still?) create very small virtual hard disk partitions from a small portion of their RAM for storing performance sensitive applications (exact opposite of what you want to do). But this practice is now disappearing with the adoption of faster SSD drives.

Edit: I assumed that you are already doing standard system maintenance like temp file cleaning, registry cleaning, defragmentation, etc. But if you are not, then download two very useful free tools “CCleaner” and “Defraggler”. Run these tools on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

Aaaah!!!! Yes, I’m now one step forward which I wasn’t able to do in the last few months. This did the trick but…..

I’m able to get the option to expand C drive after freeing some space in the beginning of D Drive instead in the end. I’m also able to expand in C drive. After saving the changes, the pc restarts but the changes are not getting saved. C drive still remains the same.

Am I by any changes in Temporary profile? First time when I restarted after doing these above steps, my Desktop settings are all changed. I think I’m in Temporary profile. I’ll try few steps on how to come back to my main profile and try this again. If it doesn’t I’ll ask here.

Thanks Dealseeker..:)

I mentioned above Ubuntu because someone provided some steps above Ubuntu stick or something. I seriously did not understand it so I skipped that step. It is just an FYI which might or might not be useful..

Hi DeelSeeker and others who read this thread,

I was able to come in my main profile from Temporary profile and expanded the space of C Drive using Easeus. However, after applying, it asks to restart. I choose yes and then once it restarts, the allocation doesn’t happen. It reverts back to the same space.

Am I missing anything else? https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

I am not sure what you mean by a temporary profile. Can you post a screen recording of your steps? Use: https://www.screen...m/ or http://www.screencast-o-mati...m/

I tried to record the screen but it asks to install the Update of Java. Even though I chose different location which has enough space, it gives me an error. I asks to delete the contents of Temp. I did delete the contents but still same Error code: 112.

Well, these are the exact steps which I did:

After applying the changes, the PC restarts. Here, the storage changes in the video but not for me. Mine remains the same..https://cdn0.desidime.com/smileys/JzBF5.gif

hold on….by watching the video half way I can see that you are using the inbuilt disk management tool by MS right?

I don’t know why people suggested you that?
because MS disk management doesn’t allow the boot drive to be extended https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif that’s why I gave you the links above..

Edit: Watching the full video will update again..

Hahahaa…seems like you hit a catch-22. Anyway, if you are doing everything correctly and the changes just don’t take then I can’t help you. Did you carefully read the message boxes from Easeus while it was applying your changes? Perhaps it threw an error but you didn’t notice.

Yes. I have four eyes(including my spectacles). Since I have moved all the files to my External Drive. I can just format the HDD and reassign the space, can’t I?

Only hectic thing will be to re-install all the software. Anyhow, most of them are pirated so I don’t mind re-installing. Genuine ones, I have serial numbers.

Do I need to have the Bootable CD to format?

Thanks. Watched this video. It is more like Extended version of Easeus. Even though this is pretty long procedure, I can do this but will this work for sure? It did not work with Easeus. https://cdn0.desidime.com/smileys/1BjAy.gif
