Hi Guys!
Dont fall for the ‘Star’ ratings.
The government has left no stone unturned in publicizing the star ratings. Yes, an item with more stars save your electricity bill.
But is it really worth?

To illustrate, i used 2 examples of Hitachi ACs from lekhwani bro’s post.

Here is Hitachi 2 Ton AC, 1 star, MRP: 33690/- Consumes 2300 Watts in one hour http://www.letsbuy.com/hitachi-rau021kqdd-kampa...
Here is Hitachi 2 Ton AC, 3 star, MRP: 39690/- Consumes 2230 Watts in one hour http://www.letsbuy.com/hitachi-rau323hsdd-sugoi...

Difference in wattage: 70 watts (i.e. You will save 70 watts energy in one hour if you use the 3 star AC compared to 1 star AC)

Suppose you use your air conditioner for 12 hours per day, 120 days per year for next 5 years.
Then energy you save in those 5 years= 70 watts per hour x 12 hours per day x 120 days per year x 5 years = 504000 watts = 504 kilo Watts

Price of One KiloWatt electricity = Rs. 5 approx.
So in 5 years, your electricity bill savings are 504 × 5 i.e. 2520 Rs. (If you use AC less than above criteria, you will save even less money)

But, to save those 2520 bucks, should you be buying an AC thats 6000 Rs more costly? If you buy the 3 star AC instead of 1 star, that means you have paid Rs. 6000 more now and will have benefit of only 2520/- Rs in electricity bill savings over the next 5 years.

I believe that government is spreading knowledge about star rating because it wants to save energy but we are here to save money guys

SO GUYS DO PROPER RESEARCH BEFORE SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON REFRIGERATOR OR AC. DONT JUST PURCHASE A MODEL BECAUSE IT HAS 5 STAR RATING.

good article. further you are comparing apple with apple. if you compare apple with say pineapple difference will become multifold. lets say someone buy a 3 star koryo or panasonic or onida 2 ton ac which would cost somewhere 25k his saving would be almost 10-15k and electricity expense would be almost 100-150 bucks extra per month i.e. utmost 600 pa for 3-4 summer months. life of ac is about 5-7 years if running during indian summers hence one pays around 3k extra on electricity bills. so one can guess what make sense, spending 3k extra or 15k extra!

Thanks Chi.
Another thing is that i compared 1 star AC and 3 star AC.
If i had compared 1 start and 5 star AC, then also difference would have been much larger.

Is it power input watt or cooling watt ???

@Smit: Sir these figures 2300 Watts and 2230 Watts are the power inputs (power consumption) of ACs because thats what determines your electricity bill.

Wrong demo :-/
Don’t believe none of the dimer caught it :|

You considered the case
Here is Hitachi 2 Ton AC, 1 star, MRP: 33690/- Consumes 2300 Watts in one hour
Here is Hitachi 2 Ton AC, 3 star, MRP: 39690/- Consumes 2230 Watts in one hour

Now consider this case :

Here is Hitachi 1.5 Ton AC, 1 star, MRP: xyz /- Consumes 2100 Watts in one hour
Here is Hitachi 1.5 Ton AC, 5 star, MRP: xyz + 5000 /- Consumes 2100 Watts in one hour

Explain now :| ? Bud, you only considered the case of watt and forgot the main thing on which you was talking i.e. stars. Okay ? Now explain me.. 2 different AC, same Ton, Same power (2100) watt but one is 1 star and one is 5 star.. how would you compute now ?

In that case you’ll shell out extra bucks for star rating but wouldn’t save a penny in your electricity bill.

Sirji jo aapka bijli ka meter chalta hai wo sirf wattage par depend karta hai, stars par nahi. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

Don’t get confused bro!
A product with higher number of stars means that the AC eats up less electricity to produce the same cooling capacity.
Now you explain, if both ACs have same cooling capacity i.e. 1.5 tons in your example and different star ratings (i.e. One AC is more efficient than the other), then how can both ACs have same power consumption?

Sir, you just said: “2 Acs, Same Tonnage, Same Power input, One is 1 star, other is 5 star.”
What you’re talking is a hypothetical situation. (Whereas the examples I gave were calculated using real products’ specifications).

I will be thankful (and surprised as well) if you can show me two ACs of same brand and same series i.e. with same specifications and same power input but different star ratings.

Lolz.. 5 star and 1star having the same power consumption ha?? You are a total noob on electricity to come up with such a hypothetical situation…there will be some difference at least in power consumed

There is possibility of both having same power consumption,
but may differ in throughput i.e like cooling capacity or time taken to cool a room.

Two different 1 ton AC with different star ratings will take different time to cool a room and may consume same power.

Star ratings are for efficiency which includes many factors, not only power-consumption.

good work cm bro.

in short , for corporate offices , banks etc. 5 star rating AC r better bcoz they hve to run it for whole yr. excluding holidays ,

while for home purposes , lower star rating AC’s ( or which ever u get at lower price https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif ) is better ….

I wud buy a 5 star ac anyday just to save electricity rather then saving money

in long term energy saving should be the main criteria then saving few bucks ,as we need greater need of electricity for our future needs

and government should come forward to give some rebates for companies who make energy efficient products and thus the companies can pass on the benefits to the consumers and by this way we can save energy in bigger picture for our future needs

Hi,

Please note that the Wattage which is given is output wattage and not input wattage.

If you consider 2 AC’s of same output wattage and tonnage, say 2100 Watts & 1.5 tons, one with 1 star and the other with 5 star.

You need to calculate how much power is consumed, which will depend on the efficiency of AC.

For all you know a 2100 watt output for a 1 star may consume around 4000 Watts
&
2100 watt output for a 5 star may actually consume just around 3000-3300 watts.

There are devices available which can measure the energy consumed and you will be suprised to find out that your 60 watt fan actually consumes around 100 Watts https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Wow, Nice information buddy. Thanks a lot.

I would have never trusted HITACHI if I am going to buy an AC. I would prefer LG or Sony. They seems to have good reviews all over internet. I generally prefer to buy by checking online feedback of everything. Recently purchase a one from http://www.airfixll…m/ seems to have good performance till now.
