barnes and nobles nook hd+, around 110-125 for refub model (49 for new) available easily at b&m stores or amazon/ebay. you are paying around 8k for 9 inch very solid tablet+ereader available for 14-15k minimum in india. don’t buy mobiles, most contract/paygo mobiles are cheap but won’t work in india. unlocked ones are costly in compare to india. no point buying nexus 4/7 2013 at current price. ask your friend to get some chocolates only.

though if it interests you look up what Google Chromecast is.. since Amazon/ sellers does not ship it to India.. i too am contemplating like you to ask someone
but for me- reason is way different.. i dont use touch screens any more now [well my old Symbian P910i/Ericsson’s apart]
in our home: have all these young women in their 50s who live by Balika Vadhu and such glycerin tear serials.. will buy them a droid device and a chromecast dongle
then they can see the damn episode streamed via the droid device [youtube or whatever] TO the TV [which has HDMI IN]
cause often there are reason that they can not watch those Ekta Kapoor serials and then its a mess at home as half of those upset ladies make us all miserable.

i can just ask them to download/view the damn think on a android device and if others too want to see on TV.. Chromecast Zindabaad [till ulhasnagar and Chinese come up with a copycat product]

that way one doesn’t get phaked if they [Ladies] miss their episode cause men folk want to watch NatGeo or kids cry for Pogo

If you have elitist tastes then look up what LaCie Blade Runner is. i would have ordered it to be shipped here or even asked a freight forwarder ship it to me
but then as dharmanathji said- living within ones means makes one a better individual
plus Seagate 3Terabyte model like the SV35 series are much better and at a vast difference to Indian prices seagate warranty check is done on the net.. so even Indian guys have accepted at least in my case a disk purchased outside india for repairs.. but that was 2008 -2009.. though Seagates have hardly ever failed me i had dropped the Barracuda while it was spinning and that was after using it externally via an adapter for 12 hours]

if you are into heavy downloading etc or need stoarage- consider ST3000VX000 3TB.. or any brand/model which says they are optimised for CCTV’s recorders [DVR]
such drives are meant to survive multiple read/ writes.. more that the normal use drives.. just use / buy a good jacket/ covering plate thingy and SCSI to USB adapter and you get a good external portable storage

if you are into nature or travel or hiking- a multi utility/ multi compartment sleeping bag [as in in which humans sleep while out camping]
or some mountain gear etc or even them night / low light enhanced binoculars or something if it is not available here or at very high price

I have experienced this obligation business first hand while my bro was in USA 10 years back.

Now a days my bro goes to USA on office trips once a year but ends up buying barbeque stand or some obscure stuff and I don’t bothering him to buy anything.

Dont bet your luck on refrub items. I ended up with 2 refurb Garmin walkiee talkees with in built GPS with location tracer of 1 was DOA. Local Garmin service centre refused to entertain even though I was ready to pay for repairs.

Since you don’t even know what to buy and are still planning to buy. I’m guessing you’ve plenty surplus money.

I suggest you buy multiple Flipkart coupons and gift those to us here

nobody mentioned Playstation 4 ? …. It’s the most demanding gadget right now … get that asap even if you don’t need it or intend to use it .. buying at 25k you can easily sell it for 35k in a flash.. it will be sold in India for 40k that too with limited stocks. it will be OOS everywhere for next 3-4 months which might let you sell it foe even 40k … it’s currently being sold for 45-50k in grey market

though Anna Hazare might scorn at it but there are plenty of DesiDimers and others selling Amazon Gift Vouchers redeemable at the .com site and worth few hundred USD
of-course they have not got it from Amazon or if from Amazon then by doing all the dirty tricks
isn’t it better to order it [play station etc type stuff] ghar baithey and have it delivered from Amazon or ask a freight forwarder to receive it in U.S.and deliver it here?

18002004770- people like Bombino [the same company who released many films on video tape 1990’s] even put out classifieds in newspapers.. apart from taking thepla/ khakra etc for dear children who are in USA.. they might bring things IN from USA at 400INR /per Kg and in fact over some sweet talk or after giving business it can be negotiated downward
ask them to give proof of duty paid if they say Customs was paid or something… though best of logistics Cos. even FedEx/ UPS know the tricks of trade.. like wrapping consignment in some other carton/ box .. and try luck declaring it as used household item or even scrap/ books which have zero or nominal duty

Makes me think buying a used Canon 70-200 f/2.8 USM from USA where it would be for some 50K while a new one in India is for over a Lakh.

Playstation attracts a very high custom duty . directly getting it shipped from amazon.com costs you 36,000 rs after custom .. the duty is around 9000 rs .. of course if i have 2-300 $ coupons then really it’s a no brainer.. rest you can do the math
