Microsoft is Downloading 6GB of Windows 10 Updates Without User’s Consent

Microsoft is automatically downloading 3.5GB to 6GB of Windows 10 files, even if the user hasn’t opted to upgrade, reports The Inquirer.

The issue came into light, after one of Inquirer’s reader complained that a folder labeled ‘$Windows.~BT’ was taking up his disk space and slowing down his broadband.

The reader pointed out that he hadn’t opted for the update, yet the update tries to install Windows 10 every time he boots up his PC.

“I know of two instances where people on metered connections went over their data cap for August because of this unwanted download. My own internet (slow DSL) was crawling for a week or so until I discovered this problem,” said the unidentified user in his statement to The Inquirer.

Microsoft confirmed that it was forcing the new update to its users in a statement to The Inquirer. It said that users will be prompted to install Windows 10 once the files were downloaded without the user’s consent.

“For individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help upgradable devices get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files they’ll need if they decide to upgrade,” said Microsoft to The Inquirer.
