SOON WE MAY SEE A 3rd DOSE OF COVID-19 VACCINES, ALSO KNOWN AS A BOOSTER DOSE

SputnikV will soon offer a booster shot, adjusted to work against the Delta variant of coronavirus, first detected in India, to other vaccine manufacturers.

Makers of the Russian Sputnik V Covid vaccine said they will soon provide vaccine manufacturers with booster shots “adjusted to work against” the Delta variant of coronavirus.

  • RDIF claims Sputnik is more effective against Delta variant than others
  • Delta variant of Covid-19 has been identified as a ‘variant’ of concern by the WHO

“It is about five months since the start of vaccination in India. Everyone is looking towards the government, doctors and scientists if they are safe or they need a booster dose to make themselves safe. This is the important question and we are having lots of research in India and abroad including US and European countries,” Dr Sanjeev Sinha, Professor in Department of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi said.

“We will have other data also in two-three months. Then we will be able to decide on booster dose. Everything will be based on research. There is some work is going on booster dose at AIIMS also,” he added.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has claimed that the Sputnik V vaccine is more effective against the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 than any other vaccine.

The Delta variant of Covid-19 has been identified as one of the major drivers of the second wave of infections in India in May of this year. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Delta variant had spread to 74 countries as of June 14.

The Delta variant (B.1.617.2), first discovered in India, has been a menace around the world. It has been held responsible for rise in Covid-19 cases and deaths around the world. The devastating second Covid-19 wave in India has been attributed to this variant and has given rise to fears over a third wave. Manufacturers are trying to ascertain the efficacy of their Covid vaccines against this and other variants.

The decision to provide the booster shot for Delta variant to other makers is not a surprising development. Sputnik V developers have been longstanding advocates of vaccine cocktails for improving efficacy. Gamaleya claims the jab itself is the first Covid-19 vaccine cocktail as it uses heterogeneous boosting with 2 shots by 2 different adenoviral vectors Ad5 and Ad26.

Back in November 2020, Gamaleya had offered to share one of its two human adenoviral vectors with AstraZeneca to increase the efficacy of latter’s Covid vaccine. Using two different vectors for two vaccine shots will result in higher efficacy than using the same vector for two shots, it had claimed.

The proposal had been accepted, before trials for the combined Sputnik-AstraZeneca vaccine were put on hold briefly towards the end of May. Earlier in June, news agency Reuters confirmed that the combined shot did not have any adverse effects on the test subjects.

The variant of concern designation is given to strains of the virus that scientists believe are more transmissible or can cause more severe disease. Vaccines, treatments and tests that detect the virus may also be less effective against a variant of concern.

Russia launches booster shots amid soaring infections

Health authorities started offering booster shots with the domestically produced, two-shot Sputnik V vaccine and its one-shot Sputnik Light version.

Russian health authorities on Thursday launched booster vaccination for those who had been sick with COVID-19 or immunised more than six months ago, an effort that comes amid a surge in new infections and deaths.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said he had received a booster shot and urged city residents to follow suit. “In view of the difficult epidemiological situation today, doctors recommend having booster shots six months after vaccination,” Sobyanin said on his blog. “I’m pleading with you not to miss a chance to get additional protection from the virus, which is particularly important amid the spread of a more aggressive delta variant.”

Moscow health authorities on Thursday started offering booster shots with the domestically produced, two-shot Sputnik V vaccine and its one-shot Sputnik Light version. Other Russian regions are also starting to offer booster shots.

Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told a government meeting Tuesday that the ministry has issued guidelines allowing those who contracted COVID-19 to get vaccinated six months after they recovered, and those who have been immunized to get booster shots six months after their first vaccination. (AP)

Other vaccines will follow the same procedure. As long as covid is present, mutations will keep occurring.
I recently read about Singapore policy in this regard. They are going to give shots every 6 months or yearly just like the flu shots every year during flu season, if covid remains in the world and keeps on mutating.

I don’t think govt going to give vaccine free after 2 doses.

Sputnik V trials among 12-17s start in Moscow

Early trials of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine among children ages 12 to 17 have started in Moscow, city officials said Monday. Deputy Mayor Anastasia Rakova said 100 volunteers have been recruited who haven’t been previously infected with the coronavirus and don’t have health issues that would prevent them from getting the shots.

Rakova said the youths will receive a small dose of Sputnik V than what is usually administered for adults. The new trial comes as Russia faces a sharp surge in coronavirus infections and struggles to ramp up its low vaccine uptake.

As of last week, only 23 million people, or just over 15% of the country’s 146-million population, have received at least one shot of a coronavirus vaccine. —PTI
