500+ bought in the past month, but the product has only 7 reviews.

Amazon recently started showing these sales numbers alongside some product listing.

Today I looked at a product that is showing 500+ bought in the past month, but having only 7 reviews (and some of the reviews do not have the Purchase verified icon next to it).

Reviews to Sales figures does not look real.

Are these numbers honest sales numbers ? Or are these numbers virtually generated to hype the product popularity ?

Do you have any experience to share on this? Would like to hear what is going on behind these numbers. Thanks.

Not everyone who purchases the product reviews it as well. I wouldn't believe any reviews from accounts that don't mention "verified purchase".

Most of the customers on Amazon don't leave a review, unless you send them reminders.

Most reviews are done by professional reviewers, who charge the brand to provide reviews for an additional charge. Amazon brands are one such example.

These stats are pretty realistic, no one reviews until they face an issue with the product or have some incentive for posting a positive review.

That said, it's possible that amazon might be misreporting sales numbers, but that doesn't affect purchase decision, if someone needs a product he would buy it based on his need, not based on a stat that so many others bought it.

It might have a psychological impact but nothing more than that. To those who actually see these stats before buying would suggest taking purchase decisions on more tangible basis.
