a massive backdoor for Linux hidden amongst very widely used tools such as "xz-utils" was discovered and nearly put a whole bunch of systems into serious risk, thankfully it was caught but now we're wondering just how much damage actually remains.

Apparently, the guy who made the backdoor also worked on the kernel. Kernel maintainers are now in a scramble to find any compromised code.

The important thing to note is that this was caught because it is open source. If this would've been a disgruntled employee of a company the company would've swept the entire thing under the rug.
