The sweet spot is 2-4 years.
Irrespective of price you should keep using it until you feel the current phone is not able to fulfill your requirements or it has become obsolete.
if buying new stuff is upgrading then im upgrading food everyday
Ideally till the latest version of apps you use support the Android OS version on the phone and are installable .
Minimum 3 years or less if there's any good exchange offer or any double dip loot
Where is every month ?
iPhone 13 Pro Max bought in November '22 and still planning to use it atleast for next 3-4 years
Used to be every 4-6 months (early 2000s) but have gradually reduced changing it. 3 is the maximum I had a phone (Fold2) and now planning for 2 years for future. My main criteria is SIZE and RAM, always looking for bigger size phones.
my personal way fo thinking is in terms of per day cost.
so if i want my phone that should last 4 years and i am willing to spend 10rs per day for it then the budget for the phone comes around 15k.
This is how i make budget for a purchase
For me the change has been every 3 years. Though no issues with phone ever, battery drainage becomes major concern for me, that I have to keep it on charging majority of the day.
Waiting for OnePlus 12 now, changing from OnePlus 9 Pro.
Same. I also have made a point to get a replacement battery towards the end of the 3rd year irrespective of the health of the original battery which ensures that the device is useful for a good 6-7 years even if bypass charging can't be enabled.
Android: 3 to 5 years
iPhone: 5 to 7 years
As long as DD members suggest
Since you asked his her phone change, His phone 2 years, her phone 3 years, women are extra careful
As long as your smartphone runs smoothly without any major hiccups and fulfills your expected features, you should not switch to new smartphones. Smartphone manufacturers need to continue the flow of revenue, so they keep launching new smartphones, contributing to the increase in e-waste.
I am hoping one of my earliest devices which just started it's 8th year can get to the 10th year unscathed. Android OS support is planned to end at A15 making it 9 versions ( and not even one from the shitty OEM). It's already booted Debian Linux on a mainstream kernel and after A15 it will serve life as a Linux device.
I would love it if my Poco F1 (quarter past 4 years) can get as far.
I usually replace my primary devices at the 3 year mark. They then get handed over to my father. More RAM is the biggest reason for an upgrade followed by higher CPU performance albeit a much lesser concern as I usually go for SD8xx series or equivalent. Already my 12GB Poco F4 is running at 95% memory usage all the time. Maybe it's MIUI to blame. Still waiting for the right opportunity to ditch it in favour of AOSP/CAF based custom ROMs. If nothing else RAM management would be much better.
Depends totally on income and liabilities. No amount of new features in new phones can help anyone to avoid repaying loans or kids fees or other liabilities.
I keep a timeline of 4 years and it should last easily if used wisely.
Dheli
You device expense should not be more than 3K per year
Buy phone, Disable all updates.
Cheers! Keep it easily for 6-7 years, Until Apps stop supporting due to android version.
Buy Phone. Keep on updating
Phone will last maximum 3 years.
apps need to be updated ?
Jitne saal security patches aa rahe hai, earlier norm was 4 years, now getting 5-7 years so utne time chalao araam se
assuming hardware-wise the phone is fine then software-wise, it is advisable to upgrade once the security updates are no more available for the phone, e.g. Redmi Note 5g (base) and pro version has 2 OS upgrades and 3yrs of security updates so the ideal timeline to upgrade the phone (assuming you have purchased it in Jan2024) will be by Jan-Feb 2027 as mostly the last security update will be Dec2026 version/updates
use daily until you get security update.
use as backup after end of support for security updates.
If your required apps are working fine then continue to use it 🙂
Also contribute to reduce e-Waste which is one of the major concerns globally.
So..... Anywhere between 6 months to 6 years.
.......X........
On a serious note, as long as all of your needs are met, you should keep it. First you should find out what are your actual needs from a phone?
I always suggest keeping atleast two phones. One primary and other secondary phone(s). For my primary bank account I keep a seperate basic keypad phone which takes nano SIM.
How do you do UPI transactions? Do you use *99# USSD services?
I personally change in around 18Months 😂, reason something gets break. and one point, always for tech go for highest config. it helps you to increase the usability lifespan.
Buy one good flagship phone use 3-5 years seamlessly. Buy cheap phones you will need to upgrade every 1-2 years.
Even cheap one works for 4-5 years easily
I. Five years
II. Until your banking and financial apps stop support for the android version of your phone.
III. Your phone literally breaks down or gets stolen.
Any one of the above three is the time to switch your phone.
Unless... it's an iPhone! That thing you kèep forever.
You didn't want much from it to begin with, anyway.

The most correct option in my opinion is missing that is till when the phone is working properly without much issues.
