All trains are wait listed, what can i do? I need to get to mumbai tomorrow from a city in gujarat.

I need to urgently go to mumbai tomorrow. I cant afford AC fares and the journey is only 4 hrs.
Will making a wait listed ticket online help in anyway? Wont that just be auto cancelled and auto refunded?
Can i go to counter and ask for a ticket in general 1 hr before journey? Will i get a ticket? Will i get a seat? Will TT allow a wait listed counter ticket on train ? I am okay with standing near washroom for the whole journey but would like a seat in any compartment.
Anybody who has experienced this please help. Will be traveling with wife tomorrow early morning

if my departures at 7:30 AM from my city, what is the last time to buy counter ticket?
If i go to counter at 6:30AM or 7AM and ask for waitlisted ticket, will they issue it no question asked?

Any cheap bus service? Try looking for that as well, but since you told 4 hr journey, you can book general tickets and ask TT to help, sometimes they give warning to go back to general, but mostly they allow and give you seat at tatkal rate , that's what had happened with me.

Don't take stress.
You can buy general ticket anytime, and it's not bound with any specific train.
You can't get wait listed counter ticket after the chart preparation.
If frequency of the train is good for Mumbai from your location, then you will easily get seat in the general compartment.
You can even travel in the sleeper coach in an empty seat by paying the fare difference. (If TTE allows.)
Try to find alternatives like Bus/Share Taxi/etc.
Share your location, so if anyone have experience from that area/city can help you.

If it's a day journey then there won't be much problem as you can adjust with others and travel for 4 hrs in sleeper compartment easily.
Just take a counter waitlisted ticket now if possible and travel on SL class.
If not then buy general ticket at counter before departure and convert it with tt to travel in reserved class or if not much rush in general class then travel in it.

Online AC waitlisted e-tickets stand automatically cancelled after final reservation chart preparation. However physical AC waitlisted tickets are not automatically cancelled and you are not treated ticketless. Also try to find out specific quotas allocated to major on-route stations, where people board from those stations later in the journey. Most of the times such seats remain vacant till that boarding station arrives. You can occupy these seats till the quota station arrives and explore options with the TT.

This app is from irctc, and is specially designed for Tatkal, general tickets and platform tickets.
You can buy tatkal from this App, it will not be auto cancelled. However to buy ticket you will have to be near station ( under 2km radius) only then it will let you buy tatkal. It is same as counter Tatkal

Do not buy online ticket as it will get cancelled when the chart gets prepared iff it is heavily wait listed.
Do not buy general ticket as it is meant for travelling in general bogie rather, in case you buy it you will have to pay the panalty for travelling in normal sleeeper seats rather buy a super fast ticket ,it will allow you to travel in any normal sleeeper coach , where you can request the tte for the seat

Journey is only 4 hrs ? To bhai bus ticket book kar le (no ifs and buts), ya BlaBlaCar se cab ka jugaad kar le, kaiko tension le raha hai.

Decide on your own
1. Reservation counters open from 8 AM to 8 PM on weekdays and 8AM to 2 PM on sunday. Dont have handful experience of major stations like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata etc.
2. At Old Delhi railway station there is a counter named "Aaj ka Reservation" where you can get train ticket only 2 hr prior your departure time. Check for that in your city.
3. Check for current availability 4 hr scheduled departure time from station and also 4 hr before schedule departure from originating station. You might get ticket of you are lucky.
4. Waitlisted ticket from any app will automatically cancelled and money refunded to your source so beware purchasing waitlisted them from any agent and don't board train with them you will be treated as without ticket and fined extra for not having ticket.
5. If time allows you then go via passenger train having all general boggies which stops at every station, if mail express takes 4 hr then it might be take upto 7-8 hr but high chances of comfortable journey.
6. Worst case in my opinion - Take general ticket and board sleeper class after checking general boggies. Try to have seats otherwise compromise near gallery not toilet as you also have your life partner with you. Hope she understands your problem.
7. With case discussed above, TT will only make ticket with difference fare and ask him for seat if any but don't give him extra penny for seat. Just roam in all coaches and find that for yourself.
Try to travel in daytime it will be easier for you.

Better check reservation chart.. sometimes some seats are empty for some distance.. u can sit on those seats and then move to other one

Just to add that the unreserved offline ticket types from A to B:
1. Passenger train ticket
2. Mail/Exp train ticket
3. Superfast train ticket
Only difference is in fare. These are not train specific and don't que up in reservation counters bbut go to unreserved general ticket counters; you DON'T need to fill up a form for buying these tickets. Need to tell only destination and ticket type to the booking clerk.
The motto of buying these tickets so that one cannot be penalised for travelling without ticket. TTE can charge difference in fare and allot free berths if same available after charting (after RAC to berth allotment priority).
Theoritically one cannot travel on reserved compt with unreserved ticket but TTEs don't mind if fellow passengers are accomodative.
In sleeper class, berth no. 7 is reserved for TTE. So TTEs let people sit or sleep there.
