Hi,
Is any dimer here know someone who has received bone marrow transplant for cancer treatment?

Please share your experience and things to take care of, if one decides to undergo bone marrow transplant.

Cancer- Multiple Myeloma

1) Decide good centre - Here post transplant nursing care is most important. There are high chances of infection & its complication & body's immunity will be almost Nil for few days (WBC<1000 count). So not only good doctor is required, good nursing care is more important.

2) Cost - As told u, there are frequent chances of infection & patient might need to go to ICU more than once & need to use high antibiotics = All of these will be indirect (Not directly related to BMT) cost. So be prepare for very high cost compare to initial estimate given by doctor.

3) Pray to GOD & have courage to bear this tough time not only for patient but family members too.

has the patient exhausted all other treatment options including chemo?

Is the transplant recommended by his oncologist or is this something you are looking into as a possibility?

Patient may be able to carry himself under normal circumstances. But chemo and radiation are very taxing on even young people.

Considering the patient's age only(no knowledge of any pre existing conditions relating to his bones and heart), it will be very hard on him.

Like the other dimer said, he will need round the clock care and high medical cost.

As for it being safe? If he is being recommended bone marrow transplant this likely is being done after exhausting conventional treatment options.

He will essentially be without an immune system for a while. So rish very high, there is no guarantee to say its safe. But this could be the best shot he has going into remission. This may just save his life.

Hopefully you have found a suitable and willing donor. Sincerely hope he beats cancer's @ s$.

Transplant is recommended by oncologist and is autologous transplant so does not require a donor.

Multiple Myeloma is a type of cancer which can't be cured it can only be suppressed (disease will decrease than again relapse after few years). So as per doctors and articles over the internet, transplant will ensure that we will get some extra years before disease again comes back.

Autologous BMT has comparatively low adverse reactions comparatively having said that no doubt would have certain major infections to hospitalization to life threatening situations and equally the cost on patient and his finances but in MM BMT is the only option to get time and Sucess rate is in low 50s to lower so compare pros and cons before going ahead.... If your patient is a quality over quantity life kind please seriously consider time gain via BMT isn't that long..... But please take care and hope the patient recovers

Depends on stage of cancer.

1. If its early stages and transplant can cure the disease. Go for it without any delay.

2. If its late stage.. patients usually survive like 4-5 years and the end time is full of pain and suffering to the patient. One of my family member battled cancer for 5 years. We had done all surgeries etc and done all treatment as per doctors. But she suffered a lot during last year.

If at this stage, ask for patients opinion.. and honour that. Dont force them to go for surgery if they dont want to. You might get to stay some extra time with them but remember .. during that extra time the person would be in extreme pain and suffering only and seeing them in this condition would break you.

Thanks bro for sharing the details. Really understand what you are feeling. In same dilemma that if doing transplant will make life better or worsen it.
