What is Waste?

Waste is anything that does not add value to existing process. We should avoid waste not only to reduce cost but also it increasing long term performance of a process.

Seven Types of Wastes (TIM WOOD)

I suggest that you keep in mind TIM WOOD (acronym for the 7 types of wastes) every time you do process analysis.

Seven Types of Wastes that we are trying to eliminate from our business processes:
Transport Waste – using mail where email could be used; we need to minimize the amount of movements (movement of paperwork is a type of transport waste).
Inventory Waste – forms waiting to be worked on, cash not used to generate income, office space not completely utilized, storing of unnecessary documents/obsolete forms.
Motion Waste – walking to deliver paperwork, non-ergonomic office layout (excess motion/ non-value added activities)
Waiting Waste – waiting for information from another person, waiting for approval, system downtime, waiting for shared equipment.
Over Production Waste – unnecessary paperwork, producing too much or too soon, more copies produced than needed, more data than needed on reports, extra “Just in case” steps.
Over Processing Waste occurs when we do something unnecessary; Redundant processes; Manual processes were still retained after automation.
Defect Waste – missing information, errors, client complaints; by reducing the number of errors, we reduce the amount of rework which in turn reduces costs and turn around time.
The Eighth Type of Waste

Unused Creativity People knowledge and skills that are not utilized by the company.

Chuan and Jing joined a wholesale company together just after graduation. Both worked very hard. After several years, the boss promoted Jing to sales executive but Chuan remained a sales rep.
One day Chuan could not take it anymore, tender resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.

The boss knew that Chuan worked very hard for the years, but in order to help Chuan realise the difference between him and Jing, the boss asked Chuan to do the following. Go and find out if anyone is selling water melon in the market?

Chuan returned and said yes. The boss asked how much per kg?
Chuan went back to the market to ask and returned to inform the boss the price is $12 per kg.
Boss told Chuan, I will ask Jing the same question?
Jing went, returned and said, boss, Only one person selling water melon.
Price is $12 per kg, $100 for 10 kg, he has inventory of 340 melons.
On the table 58 melons, every melon weighs about 15 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.
Chuan was very impressed and realised the difference between himself and Jing.
He decided not to resign but to learn from Jing.
My dear friends, a more successful person is more observant, thinks more and understands in depth. For the same matter, a more successful person sees several years ahead, while we see only tomorrow.
Think! how far have you seen ahead in your life?
How thoughtful in depth are you?

Ways To Build A Strong Character | Psychologium

Some people are more likable than others, and that is mainly because of their unique character – outgoing, friendly, talkative, empathic, down-to-earth and honest people always have it easier. We use the term “character” almost on a daily basis, but how many of us actually know what a good character involves? People love loyal, courageous and moral people, and if you have decided to take your character and personality into your own hands, then here are some of the most important things you need to pay attention to:

1. Always Be Calm

There is no point in getting all heated up and overreacting – calmness can take you a very long way, as this state of serenity and quietude allows you to meditate and concentrate and, ultimately, to make the decision that benefits you the most. Calmness is undoubtedly one of the most notable traits of people with strong characters – if you manage to express yourself, your thoughts and your emotions in a calm and warm manner, that will certainly appeal to all those around you!

2. Avoid Drama At All Costs

Nobody likes drama queens – we all have our fair share of problems that we need to deal with, but drama and fatalism have never solved any issue so far. We are all responsible for the lives we live, and instead of trying to blame everybody else but yourself for your failure, you should take responsibility for your actions and do your best to change your destiny. Happiness is a state of mind that one often builds – you do not find happiness, you create it from scratch. Also, remember the law of attraction: what you think, you attract!

3. Steer Clear From Irrational Impulses

Irrational impulses are, sometimes, part of human nature – some people feel things more intensely than others, and this may lead to irrational actions sometimes. If you do not guard against these impulses, they can take their toll on your relationships and they can easily bypass your intellect as well. Sometimes, we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by fear or sadness, when ultimately it is entirely up to us to decide whether we are the slaves of our deepest fears or if we practice self-control.

4. Be A Truth Seeker

Everybody loves truth seekers – they would rather choose a tough and hurtful truth over a comforting lie, and that is certainly one of the most important markers of a strong character. Strong and rational people always doubt things and they examine all the facts – that is why they are rational, in the end. Strong people get rid of all their biases and prejudices and they are always in the pursuit of happiness, on all levels.

5. Be Courageous And Never Look Back

Fear is a perfectly normal and natural state – we are genetically programmed to feel fear during stressful situations, and every single person on Earth has felt it at least once. However, while some people wear their heart on their sleeve, others manage to masterfully disguise their fear and to let courage prevail – and this is precisely what you should do as well, if you have decided to make the best of your character. Face your obstacles and overcome them – do not run away, do not panic and always trust yourself.

how-to-overcome-fear-of-making-decisions

6. Be Empathic

Being empathic is one of the most important and valued character traits – as a matter of fact, empathy is what makes us human. One of the most common misconceptions many people have these days is that showing empathy and warmth makes them look weak, when the truth is that only truly strong people, those who shine from within are able to be good and kind with others. Love those that surround you and always empathize with them, without expecting anything in return. Never judge people before walking a mile in their own shoes, for everybody is fighting a very hard battle that you know nothing about!

7. Be Confident

Self-confidence is very attractive and empowering – when you are confident in your own potential, you inspire other people to be the same, and everybody will love you for that. Confidence is a natural thing, and we are not born confident – instead, we learn how to build our confidence and how to respect and love ourselves. Throughout our lives, we go through numerous events that shatter our self-esteem, or that at least make it plummet. However, it is up to us to sail smoothly through all of these obstacles and never to accept failure or defeat as an option. Success is built upon itself, and that certainly requires a lot of time and effort – besides this, it is essential to acknowledge all your small accomplishments, instead of focusing only on your biggest failures. That is by far the best way to build confidence and, ultimately, to become a stronger person with a character everybody will love!

8. Always Maintain Your Reputation And Your Image

Your reputation is one of your most valuable assets, as it takes years to build a good reputation within your circle of friends, and only a few seconds to have it shattered. People always love and respect those with a good reputation and a flawless personal integrity, and you must do your best to keep your reputation impeccable, as long as this does not require you to sacrifice other qualities, such as honesty. Always be true to who you are, and remember that there are some people who might look up to you for inspiration.

9. Be Courteous And Polite With Everybody

Being courteous will never become old-fashioned, for people will always appreciate good manners. However, when it comes to courtesy, it must be said that everybody can be courteous and nice with their friends and with people they generally like – the true challenge arises from being courteous with those you dislike! If you manage to do so and still keep it real at the end of the day, then you have managed to strengthen your character to a greater extent than you might have bargained for, and your friends and relatives will undoubtedly appreciate that.

Project management is a tough role. You often find yourself being pulled between keeping users, subordinates, team members and senior people happy. Given these demands, what do the best project managers do that makes them stand out from the crowd?

1. Focus on Solutions
Problem solving and breaking through constraints is an essential part of managing projects. Those that excel as project managers have a mindset where they focus on finding solutions to problems. They keep asking themselves how they can overcome whatever barriers arise.

2. Participative and Decisive
All the best project managers understand the need to communicate and consult. They also know that lots of talking and procrastination achieves nothing. Finding the right balance between consulting, deciding and acting is what separates the best from the rest.

3. Focus on Customer
In every project there are customers. They might be internal or external or a combination of both. The best project managers keep customers at the forefront of their mind. They listen effectively, take on board the feedback they are getting and look for ways of incorporating it whenever they can.

4. Focus on Win-Win Outcomes
In any project there will be many stakeholders, all of whom will see their issues as being the most important. The challenge that the best project managers respond to is finding solutions that address the issues without compromising the overall project structure.

5. Lead from the Front
Project managers need to lead by example. The example they set determines how the rest of the team behave and respond to the challenges that arise. Those project managers who want to encourage openness and honesty are open and honest themselves. Those that take risks and learn from their mistakes empower others to do the same.

6. Adapt to What Arises
You can set out the best plans in the world, think about the risks, put great tracking in place and even then the unexpected will show up from time to time.
Adaptability is a key characteristic of the best project managers. View adaptability in projects a bit like the flight path of an aircraft. It can be off course along the way but it needs to be right on target when it comes to landing.

7. Get the Best Out of Everyone
Those that excel as project managers realise they cannot do it all on their own. They recognise the importance of the collective team effort in getting results. They find and utilise the strengths in everyone and try to ensure that they allocate roles to those best placed to deliver. They learn to keep everyone motivated and pushing the boundaries to get results.

Project management is a complex and demanding role. Starting to work on these 7 habits can take you to the next level.

Leadership

As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “A leader is a dealer in hope”. A true leader is one who weaves dreams or envision goals that others are unable to fathom, he plays on the front to achieve goals and lead by example.

Leadership effectiveness is determined by the followers’ perception of the leader and their willingness to allow the leader to influence them. Therefore, a leader can also be defined by the attributes that his or her followers admire. While there are various types of leadership styles, following are the some of the most desired attributes of successful leadership.

Character

This is the unique and most important element of successful leadership. The character of leaders is primarily defined by how they deal with the challenges and hurdles that meet them on their way towards achieving goals. Every time a leader chooses to have more self-control, depict honesty and offer cooperation, it adds up to their character. A leader’s character can never be separated from his or her actions. Actions and intentions of successful leadership should be in tandem with higher moral values. The following are some of the facts about a leader’s character.

Character of true leadership always involves other people.
Responsible leaders are reliable, it is an attribute that a successful leader always demonstrates.
Communication

Successful leadership is defined by excellent communication skills. Prosperous leaders are the ones who communicate knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. Regardless of the complexity of the situation, these leaders display an uncommon ability to connect and communicate with people. Whether a leader is speaking to a group of people, looking into a camera or connecting to a follower one-on-one; a successful leader will always be able to communicate with maximum effectiveness.

Adaptability and Flexibility

Productive leadership entails the willingness to assess results, admit mistakes and flexibility of mind. This means that successful leaders are flexible in the realization of their goals and objectives. Without adaptability and flexibility, strength of will can become dangerous. A constructive leadership is defined by a leader who accepts his or her mistakes and agrees to change leadership decisions or adapt to changed circumstances.

Competence

Being adequately or well qualified physically and intellectually always leads to successful leadership. Therefore, competence is more than just words. It is primarily the leader’s aptitude to say it, plant it as well as do it in a way that followers will appreciate. One does not need to be an extremely knowledgeable or rich person to exhibit competence in leadership. Competent leaders normally do the following:

They show up when they are expected to and do more than what is expected of them.
Continually search for ways to keep learning, growing and improving in what they do.
Delegation and Trust

A successful leader is one who takes a practical approach to problems and is concerned primarily with the success or failure of his or her actions. According to Forbes, a constructive leader is a good organizer and he or she knows how to delegate. He or she authorizes subordinates to make certain decisions. The basis of delegation is trust in his or her followers. As a leader, it is a sign of strength to trust your followers. A leader must trust if he or she wants to be trusted by the followers.

Understanding & Openness

The basis for all successful leaderships includes understanding and openness – the ability to place oneself in the position of others. Constructive leaders possess the sensitivity to show empathy and they are always open to persuasion. A leader who demonstrates these attributes knows his or her followers, their motives, weaknesses, strengths, aspirations and ambitions.

Charisma

Among the various attributes that define a successful leadership, charisma is one of the most important one. A charismatic leader is more concerned about making other people feel virtuous about their own situations; therefore, charisma is the ability of a leader to draw people in his or her direction. According to Harvard Business Review, charismatic leaders have confidence, personality and style. Charismatic leaders do the following:

Share themselves and their life journeys.
Enjoy life and give people hope.
Strength of Will and Purposefulness

A constructive leadership is based on strength of will and purposefulness. A successful leader has the strength of mind to follow the path through the accomplishment of his or her tasks, and always acts purposefully. This is the kind of a leader, who under any circumstances has the strength of mind and persistence in carrying on with the process of accomplishing his or her tasks. Basically, leaders who possess willpower and purposefulness are always ready to pay the price of being at the top, including: loneliness, sleepless nights, and long working hours.

Courage

Courage to change things is a nonnegotiable quality of successful leadership. A successful leader initiates change and understands that introducing change would require a lot of things that may prove to be costly and time consuming. Therefore, the difference between a successful and unsuccessful leader is that a successful leader is a person who is courageous enough to say things in public that were only whispered by others. It is the leader’s courage to act on what he or she sees and the courage to speak when everybody else is silent.

Visionary Initiative

Visionary leaders inspire others to have enough imaginative power and successfully identify tendencies and anticipate problems. These leaders have the spirit of creativity that helps them face problems and they have enough initiative to solve problems. Therefore, the real test for successful leadership is the ability to make the right changes at the right moment.

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you. "The young executives were Shocked, but the boss continued. “I am going to give each one of you a SEED today – one very special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have just given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO.”

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim still didn’t have anything growing and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by — still nothing in Jim’s pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn’t say anything to his colleagues, however, he just kept watering and fertilizing the soil – He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn’t going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach. It was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful — in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, but a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. “My, what great plants, trees and flowers you have grown,” said the CEO. “Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!”

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, “The CEO knows I’m a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!”

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed – Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive Officer!

His name is Jim!" Jim couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t even grow his seed?

“How could he be the new CEO?” the others said.

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead – it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!"

  • If you plant honesty, you will reap trust * If you plant goodness, you will reap friends
  • If you plant humility, you will reap greatness
  • If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment
  • If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective
  • If you plant hard work, you will reap success
  • If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.
