Contact photo automatically assigned - Privacy threat

Hi, This thing is bugging my mind, how come my phone automatically assigns pictures to their respective phone numbers?? Like, I saved a number of my cousin, who is just 14, and I have his photo in my phone(not portrait, group pic), he called my number and suddenly the cropped pic of him(from group pic) appeared as contact display picture….it baffled me, like how that’s possible?  This scene is with my backup phone Redmi note 4, not the case with the OnePlus 6…..The earlier thing (cousin pic) was to test…it happens with all the contacts saved in my phone….all fam members friends automatically assigned….

P.S : My phone is not rooted

How’s this possible? Is tagging persons in phone’s gallery possible (like of FB) ? Phone automatically CROPPING pics and assigning to contacts is a serious thing.

Encountered something this kind of situation long back… But in my case the reason was those photos are uploaded in fb and tagged to all concern people individually (something like when u hover over faces of people in image and it shows there name).. 🙂

Little bit offtopic, does Facebook recommend friend suggestions of our phone contacts?

Something related to contact sync feature. Go to Phone settings>Accounts>Click on each logged account>Click on sync>Turn Off Contact Sync. Turn off all and then delete contact and add again. AFAIK Issue should be solved. If solved, try turning on contact sync one by one to find the culprit.

Let me add my 2¢: Back in 2012 when I had a Nokia (Symbian), there was this in-built app called Social that would (if permitted to) automatically fetch & update my contact photos with their Facebook/Twitter/etc photos. Even uploading a camera clicked photo to FB/TW through Social would automatically tag the people in it. Back then, we used to upload random photos for fun just to see how Social tagged the people in it. Who knows how this technology has evolved since?

I think it’s related to facebook since whoever’s photo popped up always came from their facebook photos.
It bothered me so much esp after the huge reveal of 0 privacy 3-4 years ago that I made every one in my family to drop facebook and clear out google history (there is a process to clear decades old data from google shared by a foreigner on Twitter, unfortunately that was saved on my stolen phone and I can’t find that page anymore ☹️)

I had similar issue but for very few contacts but it was due to google where people had used that pic in google account.
It’s definitely coming from Facebook not from your phone gallery.
Maybe your mi account is linked to Facebook is causing this.
Better to always save contact’s on google and turnoff contact sync of mi cloud if its on.
Meanwhile try with any contact whose picture you think is not there in your fb account.
These kind of interlinks are definitely a big threat to the privacy with this kind of data in wrong hands can lead to very devastating effects.
