Note: This compares the number of divorces in a given year to the number of marriages in that same year (the ratio of the crude divorce rate to the crude marriage rate). For example, if there are 500 divorces and 1,000 marriages in a given year in a given area, the ratio would be one divorce for every two marriages, e.g. a ratio of 0.50 (50%).

Data is from last available year by country. As an example Portugal data is from 2020, Germany is from 2017.

Like you rightly said, interpretation matters and can lead to (even) widely varying interpretations.

Maybe if the source of these data points (and/or the published study) are known, then one can better analyse the homogeneity (and comparability) between various regions (countries).

Also, irrespective of the above, since desertions do not have specific, structured recording (in most of the government records, official records), the figures of divorce alone can never give a complete picture of the state of society.

Previously it used to a phenomenon in primarily in western countries,
but of late, more and more desi people too😔 often desert their spouse. (Some even do so for 'lappu sa' Sachin, while some others even do so in aspirations of becoming 'photojeevi' travel vloggers.
Such creatures neither divorce nor acknowledge their spouse.
And much less.. give any conjugal rights.)

When marriage is made costly

While prostitution / having affair / sux is easy

Then divorce will become just a game

As people told perspective matters. I personally think the rates are low due to "Log kya kahenge". Many couple will bear a child too thinking that will eliminate friction between them. Usually on insistsnce of elders who to be honest don't care about their children and only care about "samaaj".

I know people in my relatives who are unhappy in marriage and still haven't separated. I know a girl who said no to a guy (my maternal cousin) for marriage but are now married since few years. Pretty sure girl's parents forced her.

In India, marriage registration is not mandatory whereas for divorce court order is mandatory so data maybe misleading.
