I don't mean to preach because it seems the educated and privileged are ok with toying with the lives of black/brown ppl but if anyone is out here with a heart... Do give a read and share.

P.S. myself using an oppo phone for the last 5 years (without updating, as I found updates destroy the performance of my phone) bcz its running beautifully. Avoid Samsung phones, they deliberately have planned obsolescence right after one year.

Cobalt is an ingredient in high-performance alloys that are used for all kinds of super high-tech stuff.

The congo is probably the most fuckd country on earth simply because it has insane amounts of natural resources but no infrastructure. Meaning all those natural resources are bought and paid for by other countries at rock bottom prices and don't benefit it's people

A bunch of independent contractors being lifted from poverty, pursuing the glorious journey towards economic freedom that capitalism offers! Poor gets poorer.

True. My Samsung M30s is as smooth as butter since past 4 years. Battery still lasts more than a day, and camera is super. But I agree with the post, no need to change phones every year.

TVs are working well, be it offline or online... Only heard and saw atleast one of them go bad (my aunt's) during an abnormally big thunderstorm.

TV was shut off but still many ppl's electrical appliances went bad on that particular area that scary weather event.

So now me and my dad shut down electricity connection of our home whenever we see abnormal thunderstorms. The frequency of such storms have increased during the last 3 years! Local scientists have attributed it to global warning.

One electric vehicle has batteries equivalent to 10000 phones probably if not more. Maybe we should try to make ev batteries without using cobalt like Tesla instead of worrying about phone batteries.

I'm talking about it with Indian's pov since EV is yet to catch up and most Indians, including dimers here boost about buying phones every diwali and throw away working phones after a year's use. I know it's their money so they can do whatever they want but putting up this so if anyone is unaware and has a heart, they can reconsider.

wish companies start to push security updates and software updates separately as true that newer OS updates won't give the same performance (for most phones) like the android version it came with as it was built mostly on that version prior to release, moreover the manufacturer's skin like realmeUI/MIUI/ColorOS etc will dominate over the original Android skin and doesn't really give much updates in terms of features when you are moving from say now A13 to A14 but  security updates are the key I feel as it keeps your phone updated with latest fixes from google as somehow or the other everyone these days have their banking information via gpay/bank mobile app etc and if they release quarterly security updates for min 4-5yrs then it would be great as max you might end up in replacing battery once on the hardware side..

Meanwhile.. I haven't even bought new underwear/innerwear in 4-5 years now.

Not discouraging @magur 's sentiment, but this way.. we had better disassociate from 'many' such products, services and lifestyle choices that adversely impacts so many other species and our own.

I know of people who, for health reasons (home gym'ing), mill their own wheat flour by using the hand-mill stone (grinding) at home.. instead of having the machine made wheat flour.

Few others I met or know of.. are a bit obsessed with minimalism and avoiding animal products.. to the extent that they do not give ANY business to brands, companies which directly/ indirectly source animal products (say in footwear, fashion wear).

Closer home.. almost every other large international and national cosmetics brand sources mica from India and other developing countries and garments made in countries with lax regulations.. like Chindia, Bangladesh.

Almost 90% of the people active on this forum even VEHEMENTLY double down on what they say is their 'right' to burst fire-crackers.

Again an industry that is a death-knell for many.

I use my devices as long as they get updates.

My ~7 years old Redmi 3s has got A14 update and quite likely A15 will be the last possible.

Redmi Note 3 is nearing 7 years as well but is stuck on A11 (disregarding A12 port ROM) but security patches are upto date. Only minor issue is NPCI blocking UPI Lite activation in the device based on some criterion which I haven't been able to figure out.

Poco F1 with the recent 4.19 upgrade is good for A15 update so that's another device good for ~7 years. Custom ROM devs can get by the minimum kernel requirements so A16+ can't be ruled out for.

If custom ROM development for my current primary device, Poco F4, is anywhere as good as the above three I can't forsee any issue in using it for several years as well.

There are talks but fast industries owners have money, lawyers, thugs to oppress the activists and unions including victims, dead or alive.

The only one who successfully raised the issue to the western audience was John Oliver in one of his episode. He was booed and mocked for it unfortunately but he didn't care.

That comment by OP about Samsung is not true especially for the S series phones and even the mid-range (over 15k phones). We have 6 Samsungs in our house (a mix of S and A series with the oldest being over 6 years old) and I made a few friends get the M series for themselves and their parents (which are now 3-4 years old). No one has complained about anything. In fact, I eagerly await software upgrades and install them the day they are available. People need to moderate their usage of cellphones and use them with care to get long life out of them. Maintenance (not filling up the phone with photos/videos just because it has 128GB, removing unnecessary apps, disabling notifications from apps that really shouldn't be sending notifications, limiting streaming/video usage on social media apps, avoiding gaming, not pushing the phone's battery regularly to below 20%) can do wonders to the life of a phone.

Maybe you had better luck with Samsung and my dad even owned a Samsung A something worth 30k for 3 years before it was stolen.

But after that all 3 phones from 12-30k have been 💩 for my family. Had seen similar experiences on my colleagues of my old office to current one and also my relatives/friends.

Even a senior media journalist had openly raised the issue on twitter around 2021/2022 when 💩 samsung refused to repair for free when motherboard fried before warranty was over.

After the post gained viral status, they repaired it for free.

For a big brand like samsung to stoop so low and not providing any support even when it's their 💩 manufacturing faults and within warranty, they deserve boycott. Other developed and developing countries govt actually support their people and would have levied fines against such companies but ours (both bjp/congrss) don't care.

Chalo maan lete aaj se sab lok every year; phone nahi lete.

Par unn logo ka kya jab ye companies workforce kaam kardegi aur bahut saare log apna dukan closed kardegi?

Aisa dekha jayega sab ko chocolate kana baand kar dena chaiye sabse pehle, especially Nestle brand.

Electronics se kahi guna jayada Danger FMGG market hai

There are hardly a few people who purchase new phones or electronics every year, but whereas we purchase FMGG products every day, just imagine how tortured the poor have to go for this.

There are some activists who just want to dent big companies without knowing what impact they will have on others

Your point is baseless and is not making sense at all, other then whataboutery.

Earlier companies and even good electronic and fashion companies - ones in developed/developing countries went well without resorting to negative business tactics like planned obsolescence, environmental damage and modern day slavery in fast fashion brands like H&M, Marks and Spencers, Fruit of the loom, etc that are being adopted in recent decades.

I'm sure you have the thinking capacity to understand it but you're willing to support the wrong side of greed.

Making money with ethical means is good, making money without ethical and downright immoral means is disgusting and is a crime.

Buy anything ONLY when your previous bought thing is used of properly...example: don't buy a phone every year just for showoff..research and take a good phone and use it for 2years atleast ...then buy a new phone and sell your old phone...secondly, clothes...nowadays there are more clothes available than the actual need of any number of persons in family.and most of the clothes are wasted within few days as new type of kurta /saree/suits are released. At the end .what matters is NEED and REQUIREMENT

I can only comment about iphones. I am observing some disturbing trends in society.
1. Workers earning 10k-20k per month are buying more than 1 L worth iphones on EMI.
Autowala, security guard ko bhi iphone chahiye. Shauk badi cheez hai.. confused
2. Now a days, kids about to complete 10th are demanding iphones (or equivalent phones) mostly due to bad influence from others.
Main reason is privileged kids showing off iphones in schools/colleges.
Most kids are not aware of finances in their family, they push their parents to buy new iphone for them.
Poor families wont wntertain such demands, but middle class will save money to provide new iphones to their kids.

People will also pay for upgrading their iphones to 15..16..17..n story continues..

Ps. I am not iphone fan. I am using samsung devices since past 8 years and its working fine.
I have looted countless deals from dd without any issues grinning

We can use mobiles as many years we can.

But what about apps support?.

Apps like paytm do not support less than android 8.

So if we are using for longer time, we cannot use such apps.

Generally mid range mobile should be used for maximum 3 to 4 years depending upon mobile condition And app support..

No need to buy every year.
