It starts with the job, not your resume

Everybody does this backwards and it just doesn’t work well. If you create a product without understanding what your customers want first then, unless you’re just lucky you’re not going to create a great product. The same applies with your resume.

Step 1. Figure out what sort of job you want.
Step 2. Go to Dice.com, Monster.com etc… and search for related jobs
Step 3. Find all the job postings that you like and copy / paste their contents into a word document. I recommend at least 30 posts but more is better

Explaining Strengths and Weaknesses in an Interview

Nobody is perfect!!

You must remember that nobody is perfect and that this possible employer knows that.

A really great way of telling someone about a flaw is to always add a suggestion of improving that flaw. For example you could say, " I’m always told that I am a bit too slow… but that’s only because I want to do the best job I can. I guess you could say I’m a bit anal when it comes to perfection." An employer can only look at that as being a great characteristic, and in no way a negative quality to possess.

Talking about your strengths is a tricky one; you do not want to come across as egotistical. From my interviewee, an excellent answer I like to get is this: " I am very headstrong. I really like to be challenged in my job, and I just want to learn as much as I can in my position. At the end of the day I need to be able to look back on my day and feel good about the job that I’ve done. I guess you could call it sense of self worth. That’s why I always put my all into everything I do."

Here is more input and examples people have given for strengths:

Your strengths should already be noted in your resume and cover letter. Go over them (i.e., the strengths) again with the interviewer.
One of my biggest strengths is my communication skills. I work very well with all kinds of people, and understand that everyone has different perspectives about projects and work tasks – so when I work with others I realize that everyone comes to the table with different priorities and objectives. I keep this in mind when I communicate tasks that need to be accomplished with positive reinforcement and awareness of what others are working on.
A positive attitude will not differentiate you from the crowd. A good attitude is expected of every employee. Also you should back up what you say with an example. For example, don’t just say you have good customer service skills prove it by also telling them how you won a company award or received positive customer comment letters for your good service.
My strength is my flexibility to handle change. As customer service manager at my last job, I was able to turn around a negative working environment and develop a very supportive team.
Hard worker
Punctual
Determined
Able to prioritize
Believe in myself; self-confidence
I have the ability to cope with failures and try to learn from my mistakes.
I like to work in team and have been an active participant and organizer at several places.
One of my greatest strengths I’ve acquired during my education is good analytical and planning skills. This has always benefited me to set goals and try to achieve them. But at the same time, I’m driven by the thoughts of success.
Full commitment to my work
Highly energetic
Love to learn new things.
Having good interpersonal skills
Well organized and like to be neat with all of my work
A good helper towards those who need it
I am a team player and work well with others.
I have great communication skills.
I am a quick learner. I have great problem-solving skills and am willing to learn new things to get the job done.

Here are notes and examples of weaknesses:

You should answer with things you “are improving upon,” e.g., “I believe I should always be improving upon myself, good or bad.” You are answering the dreaded question without looking like an egotistical maniac, and showing the interviewer that you see yourself as a work in progress, trying to better all of your qualities.
For your weakness, just pick one that is not going to disqualify you from the job, and then follow up with – this is what really matters – the examples of what you are doing (or have done) to fix your weakness. The most important point here is to show that you learn from your mistakes and your weakness, and you are taking the corrective action to fix the situation – and stress that! For example, if the job does not require public speaking, you can say that your weakness is you are afraid of speaking in front of the public. Then tell the interviewers that you have joined a Toastmaster club or public speech course to overcome the problem. Remind them that when you identify a problem, you actively take actions to correct it, and that is how you do things.
Don’t try to use a cliche or try to present a strength as a weakness by saying your weakness is that you are a workaholic. No one will believe that answer. Being too emotional will make the recruiter wonder if your interpersonal skills are lacking. Give a true weakness but one of modest size. Shows that you have taken steps to correct the weakness. For example you want to improve your MS Excel skills so you are taking a course on that now.
I used to have trouble with procrastinating, now I have learned to write down a list of things that I need to do, and keep a calender to keep track of deadlines. I have found that this not only helps me to finish things on time, but it has also helped me to be more organized.
For my weakness, I always say that some people say I’m over-friendly. You can’t go wrong with that one. Usually, the person interviewing is like “Oh, that’s not a bad thing at all.”
I’m a little egoistic when it comes to winning things and get a little ruthless too.
I lose patience sometimes when I am not in a position to complete the assigned job in time.
I have to work on having more patience and giving myself a break, because I always want everything done at once.
Tend to go to any limits while helping my friends.
I am too focused on my work and I need to find more time to relax.
I’m too focused on work and need to develop some after-hours hobbies.

And examples of combination strength-weakness answers:

I’m a workaholic person and love to dedicate myself to the work I’m doing. But at the same time I forget to keep a balance between other things which I’m trying to improve on.
Take whatever is your best quality and also describe it as your worst. It often is, as we are all made up like two sides of a coin. Try it out with different qualities and accomplishments and see how it works. For example … The best thing about me is that I am able to see the big picture in a situation. The worst thing about me is that I can see the big picture in a situation. This is the best thing because I can remove myself from the emotion of a decision that needs to be made and act accordingly. It is a bad thing because I often can see the conclusion quicker than the other participants in a project and that can cause frustration sometimes amongst them.
My strength is my flexibility to handle change. As Software developer at my last job, I was able to turn around a negative working environment and develop a very supportive team. Always turn weakness into a positive. If you lack experience or skills for example state this but also state that you are willing to learn, or that it is an area which you would like to improve on.

Example 1:
“I do not have much experience with customer service, but I would like to gain experience in this area. I get along well with people, I am able to listen and am a good communicator so I feel that I would get on well in a customer based environment.”

Example 2:
“I am not too experienced with computers, but I am always willing to learn new skills. I have used computers a little in the past and this is one area which I would like to improve on. I am usually very quick at picking up new skills especially when it is something that I need to learn.”

Notes on interviewing
This question unfortunately has become a staple in the interview process and is an easy way out for an interviewer who can’t think of any other questions. The reason this is a bad question is simply this: If someone has a weakness that could jeopardize his chance of getting the job, he will never reveal it. So the only answers that this question receives are false answers intended to placate the interviewer. A good interviewer won’t ask this question. I’m always tempted to answer this way: “Mr. Interviewer, I always have a hard time with that question. What would your answer be to the question?”
A good interviewer wouldn’t dream of asking someone this question. As the interviewer, you will not get truthful answers from the weakness part of the question, and as the interviewee, you can end up coming across as egotistical and boastful when answering about your strengths. A good interviewer shouldn’t want to make you uncomfortable.

Answer Sample

“My strengths are my ability to be flexible; I’ve seen companies go through changes in structure and management philosophy. I’ve had to adjust my style to the new environment several times. My weakness is my tendency to over-work so I pace myself now.”
The key is to turn the weakness – a negative character trait – into something positive.

No trick: Honesty is the best policy

Whatever you do, tell the truth. While there are certainly answers that interviewers prefer to hear, it has to match reality. Why? First, it’s generally not good to get hired for a job that you’re not matched well for. If you like new, exciting, dynamic situations but you’re looking for a job on an assembly line, you’re not going to be happy; saying that you like repetitive work doesn’t make sense. Second, any good interviewer will check your references. If your answers don’t match what they hear, you’re almost certain to lose the chance for job.
Don’t ever list as a weakness the following: “I take on too many things and work to hard, and just don’t know where to stop.” It’s a cliche, completely transparent, and I can tell you that it rarely makes the desired impression.

Another opinion

This question is usually asked by prospective employers from candidates applying to them for employment. To answer this question the following procedure should be helpful:
1) Find out what nature of work “the team” in question does.
2) Assuming you are interested in that type of work, list what formal training courses you have taken and qualifications acquired in that field or a related field. Next, mention whatever practical experience you in the field. List any relevant worthwhile achievements you have made. Such specifics will carry lot of weight.
3) As a general plus point, say that you are a team worker and get on well with others, if you feel this is true.

An interviewer’s perspective

I ask this question and whenever I get an answer like “I work too hard” I know I’m dealing with somebody that I can’t really trust, and that I’m going to have a hard time developing an open and honest working relationship with. And I know that I still don’t know the person’s other weaknesses.

At least with me, an interviewee has a much better chance if I think he or she is honestly telling me about a weakness. And then I can decide whether or not I can work around that weakness. One person told me that he needs fixed deadlines because otherwise he keeps finding additional things to add and it’s hard for him to finish the project. I decided this was something I could live with and I hired him. We all have weaknesses. And if you think you’re going to outsmart me with nonsense or evasion, you’re hurting your chances with me.

It’s not always easy to keep a positive outlook during your job search. Here are a few tips for staying upbeat.

By Richard Dedor

You are a passionate, dedicated, hardworking person. So am I, and my own experience has shown me that maintaining a positive attitude is nearly half the battle in searching for a job. I have been through tough job searches, so I know firsthand that this is often the hardest thing for passionate, dedicated, hardworking people to do.

When all you may get is rejection, how do you keep a positive attitude? Here are three specific tips for accentuating the positive.

Eliminate the Negative

A positive attitude breeds positive responses. It sounds simple, but when you’re in the thick of submitting dozens of job applications and you’re receiving zero responses, or you can’t seem to get past the first round of interviews, it’s hard to maintain a positive outlook. That’s why this advice is so important.

You find out what you’re made of during a job search. You learn how resilient you are and gain new insight into your values and strengths.

Bringing the wrong person onboard can be expensive and disruptive, so hiring managers are on the lookout for clues to how interviewees will fit with their organizations’ cultures. According to Alison Green, who writes the popular “Ask a Manager” blog and is coauthor of Managing to Change the World: The Nonprofit Manager’s Guide to Getting Results, “No matter how skilled you are, most employers don’t want to hire someone who’s high maintenance, rude, negative, volatile, or overly sensitive.”

Eliminate the negative by approaching each phone and in-person interview with confidence and energy. Believe: “This organization needs me.” If you can approach your engagements with prospective employers in this frame of mind, you are setting yourself up to convey the enthusiasm that employers are seeking. You are also more likely to make a great connection and a lasting positive impression. Plus, you’ll be able to take that energy into the next day of searching and networking and beyond.

Keep a Routine

Sticking to a routine is a great way to stay energetic and positive during a job search. If you normally work out on Tuesdays at 7 a.m., you should keep doing it. If you do a girls’ night out on Thursday, keep doing it. Routine activities like this help you blow off steam and maintain your vigor. They also bring you into contact with people who care about you—people who can provide affirmation, serve as a sounding board, and help you reset your attitude.

In addition to engaging in regular outside activities, I recommend setting events on your calendar for when you’ll read industry news, send prospecting emails, and apply for jobs.

Sure, it’s OK to take a few days off here and there, but keeping a routine for personal and professional activities is an easy way to assert control over what can feel like an out-of-control situation.

Embrace the Challenge and Opportunity

You find out what you’re made of during a job search. You learn how resilient you are and gain new insight into your values and strengths.

To borrow a popular phrase, “lean in” to the reactions you are receiving from prospective employers. Reflect on what’s happening, and make a list of the stumbling blocks you’ve encountered. Then do some sleuthing for new approaches and put them into action. Embracing the challenges of a job search in this manner can have the added benefit of opening up new areas of opportunity that you may not have thought of before. It can also provide you new perspectives on how to put your passion into action.

We all know life isn’t pretty sometimes, but it’s how you respond to the tough moments that can make all the difference in the world. Getting through a job search, especially one not undertaken on your own terms, isn’t easy, but these tips can help. I know because they worked for me. Keep your chin up. Brighter days are coming, and it starts with you.

Are you, or is someone you know, an individual contributor who wants to move into a management role, either with your current organization or a new one? But, how can you sell yourself as a manager when you’ve never actually been one?

Begin the Leadership Journey Here
The basic fact is that every manager originally lacked professional management experience; and yet, of course, many people end up as managers. The chasm between individual contributor and manager can be crossed, but only if you can effectively demonstrate and describe your management skills.

So how do you begin making the transition?

First, ask yourself whether you really want to move up. A certain proportion of the people who do their jobs well eventually get promoted into management, but some actually find that they miss their individual contributor roles and dislike managing other people. A management title or salary can be appealing, but in the long run, management may not be the professional role that you really want. If you’re convinced that it is what you want, or that you at least want to try it, then get to work convincing other people that you’re ready for it.

9 Tips to Make Effective Decisions
Then find out what’s needed to achieve a management position in your organization and strive to resemble that management candidate. Start by showing management capability with the tasks you’re already doing as an individual contributor. Consider Eric, a young man who has been very successful in a tech company he recently joined. He quickly decided that he needed to create a dialogue with upper management to assure that he could work his way up to a management position as promptly as possible. He asked:

What are the requirements needed to advance?
What are the skills that I’ll need to demonstrate?
How can I best demonstrate them?

10 Analogies for a Good Leader
By asking these questions, he was viewed as a serious contender for a higher role and learned what was most valued in his company. He realized that part of his efforts would hinge around how well he managed himself. He would need to be proactive about setting his own agenda, so the people managing him wouldn’t have to. He found that his boss could then become the person who approved, rather than directed, a number of his initiatives.

Eric showed that he was taking the bigger picture into consideration in how he approached his work. He treated each assignment as if he was the project manager, showing that he could “own the project”. He over-communicated with his colleagues and his boss. By taking a proactive approach, he would not be seen as a passive participant, but as someone who could make things happen.

By actively showing what he could do, Eric was swiftly promoted to a management position that has developed and grown, much to his satisfaction and that of his company. He did this by making sure that the powers-that-be observed his efforts and were fully aware that he was ready to advance.

So what, exactly, should you say to your manager and when should you say it? Put in an early request for those watching you to be aware of your ambition so they can see it enacted. You can say things like:

“I’m ready to move ahead in the organization” or “I will be ready soon.”
“I’m enjoying what I do and I look forward to taking on more.”
“I’d like to be a candidate for the manager position that’s coming up.”
“I’ve only been here for two years, but I’ve learned a lot and I want to keep learning and growing.”
Notice that each of the sentences above takes an upbeat and confident approach to staking your claim. Readiness, a positive lookout, self-knowledge and willingness to learn are the main themes. These kinds of pronouncements don’t guarantee that you’ll gain traction on your goals, but it can make their achievement far more likely than if you don’t speak up. Your current manager — or a potential hiring manager — is busy; you want them to be alerted to your professional abilities and desires.

How else can you boost your case for becoming a manager? You can procure and share endorsements: “Jane and Joe will tell you that I organized a way for us to attack the Jones account and that it worked well for us all.” You can discuss your eagerness to help solve problems: “I’m glad that I was able to find a new way for us to handle the volume of online queries,” or “I’d like to help the group brainstorm about making the upcoming event really productive.” These messages focus on taking the lead, helping others, and solving problems for the organization.

New Manager’s Fundamentals – Some Critical Points
There will no doubt be other extenuating circumstances that factor into your chances of moving into a management role. If there’s currently someone in the position that you’d like, and he or she is not moving any time soon, you can acknowledge that reality, express your interest in moving up some day and, meanwhile, enrich your current job so that you’re in training for a larger role when the time comes.

If your boss or mentor is someone who has strong beliefs about employees needing a long tenure in an entry level role, or a particular academic or training credential that you don’t have, acknowledge it; for example: “I know that you value a longer stay at my level, but because of the current expansion of the business, I’ve been able to jump into a lot more projects more quickly than I would have otherwise.” And, of course, you can often move up the ranks more quickly by looking outside of your current organization.

My Boss is Taking Credit for my Work
As you contemplate the management role you’d like to obtain, review your own experiences in managing a goal, a group, or a process and the insights and skills the experience has given you. Lay out very clearly what you have learned about managing, inside or outside of a professional setting. State the additional management skills that you look forward to learning, and your plan to learn them. Make the pitch, and demonstrate that you are the upcoming management talent that the organization needs.

Are we really seeing?

We use only the photon flow in the visible or rainbow spectrum to experience seeing. The visible spectrum is not even one per cent of the total spectrum of light rays. What we actually see or think or feel that we are seeing is the leftover of the vast unseen things in the Universe. We cannot see the atoms. We cannot see the sub atomic particles, the energy flows…the immense Microcosm and the gigantic Macrocosm. Our experience of seeing is based on this inability to see most of the things because they are in the invisible spectrum.

And what we think we are seeing is something that is no longer there as the light that created the illusion has gone away at three lakh km per hour. We can see only the past; in fact we always travel into the past when we see things in very long astronomical distances away in light years.

We see only things in three dimensions, while their destination into the time dimension is a theory very few are aware of. The visible spectrum is just 00.0037 per cent of the total electromagnetic spectrum. The photons in this spectrum enter the eyes and from there go to the visual cortex at the back of the brain.

The brain then models objects, can model objects only in three dimensions. It cannot model single dimensional or two dimensional or more than four dimensional objects.

We see (or unsee) because most things hide. On the basis of this limited vision, we perceive, and conceive or actually we deceive ourselves. If we can see everything, when we look at ourselves, we cannot find ourselves. We see only atoms and energies continuously flowing through the so called you, me, we, they, etc, we experience our reality as part of the Universe.

About 98 per cent of the atoms now in you leave you by the next year and new atoms take their place. This is happening in every cell of the 10,000 trillion cells which constitutes you. According to Einstein, a thing consists of four dimensions—length, breadth, height and time. When a body achieves the speed of light, only time dimension remains and the other three dimensions vanish. The time dimension is actually hunting us.

May be, that is why the Sages actually close their eyes and by means of concentration, trance etc, also shut themselves of hearing, smelling and touching, the deceiving agents. They, then experience the reality, which are the vast vacuum and the space-time continuum. They feel the participation in the Ananda or the Universe. As our languages are based on our living in the visible spectrum, the words and feelings etc are not sufficient to see the ultimate truth and experience the ultimate understanding.

There are no words or feelings to remember, as all the words and feelings serve as connecting points of understanding based on our conceptualization in the visible spectrum only.

Seeing as the day today experience is certainly not observing. Observation includes,
Seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, perceiving, feeling, contemplating and tentatively concluding. According to Quantum Physics, everything is only in the superposition state or the wave state before we observe. When we or someone else observes the wave, it then changes into a piece of matter. But the super positioned wave is only in the invisible spectrum. So the notice too must in the invisible spectrum about which the conscious entity may not be conscious of. Our observation is central for the very creation of matter.

Matter based Physics and Psychology are now entering common ground. Observation creates matter and then on gradually Newtonian Physics takes over. In this day today world we do the seeing which really is unseeing.

The main problem in the topic whether there is God, is based on the illusion of separate entities, when the reality is the existence of the Universe as a continuously met morphing unity. The biggest illusion is actually space-time, which accepts the existence of separate entities, the interaction among them being the markers of time (A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking) and their relational configuration being, space.

The topic must be ‘The Conceptual Base of Understanding’. Understanding is just connecting to a concept already existing in the mind. If one has no concept to connect to, one cannot understand at all. A new phenomenon can be understood only when it can be connected to a concept existing in the mind. During the days of faith, when religions dominated the very perception and understanding, God provided the connecting conceptual base. Doubting the God Conceptual base was punished as sin.

But that concept of God is sought to be removed and in its place in the name of science, attempts are being made to put mathematical reduction-ism as connecting conceptual base. The satisfaction of the ultimate enlightenment may happen only when our scientists succeed in developing the TOE (The Theory of Everything)—Strings Theory or the Loop Quantum Gravity Theory or the Concept of the Universe as a Hologram…So for the present let us happily sing, dance, paint, sculpt, narrate, act…and go into raptures hugging our image of God.

Rapture is the real experience of God or the Universe which is living. Let rapture be the conceptual base.

The habit of interpersonal leadership is necessary because achievements are largely dependent on co-operative efforts with others. Win-win is based on the assumption that there is plenty for everyone, and that success follows a co-operative approach more naturally than the confrontation of win-or-lose.
