Google’s $20 Billion Deal with Apple for Default Search Engine Exposed in Antitrust Trial

The US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) ongoing antitrust lawsuit against Google has uncovered something quite interesting: a $20 billion payment made by Google to Apple in 2022. This hefty sum allegedly secured Google’s position as the default search engine on Apple’s Safari browser across iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Google and Apple have previously chosen to keep this information under wraps

The revelation comes from a recently released court document. Interestingly, Google and Apple have historically kept the terms of this agreement under wraps, despite renegotiating it multiple times since 2002, when Google first became the default search engine on Apple devices.

The DoJ’s relentless pursuit of transparency has finally yielded results. A lawsuit filed last year indicated that Google’s payments to Apple constituted 36% of Apple’s total Safari revenue, hinting at a significant figure. Now, the exact amount – a staggering $20 billion – is confirmed.

This deal has drawn criticism from competitors like Microsoft. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella claims the agreement stifles competition for search engines like Bing. He even revealed that Microsoft previously attempted, unsuccessfully, to have Apple adopt Bing as the default.

Apple, however, defends its choice. In court testimony, Apple’s Eddy Cue expressed concerns about Bing’s ability to match Google in “quality and functionality.” According to Cue, Apple simply believes Google delivers the “best” search experience for its users.

The future of this agreement is now resting on the DoJ lawsuit. Closing arguments are set for later this week, with a final decision from the judge expected sometime in 2024. If Google loses the case, the deal with Apple could be nullified.

Whilst the 'official' court documents might have been made publicly available in 2024

in 2021-2022 itself Google had detailed who all it payed over 22 billion USD to, so the courts knew

and as early as January 2022, reports also claimed the Apple was getting about $18 billion or more.
https://9to5mac.com/2022/01/05/apple-default-search-engine

https://www.pcmag.com/news/google-pays-18-billion-per-year-to-be-the-default-search-engine-on-apple

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/09/26/apple-on-why-google-is-default-on-iphone

So the estimated number was public knowledge, coming as it did from reputable publications like PCMag too. (Of-course these were based on Google's court filings itself. In 2023 Google admittedto paying $26.3 billion to various entities for the privilege of being the default search site.)

Now Apple Inc. has doubled down and all but shelved its own A.I. bot dreams and might even let Google integrate Bard/Gemini into the Apple ecosystem (for additional compensation/fees).

Google paid apple, a profit for business, to use its products.

How is this stifling competition?

Apple is one company and the deal seems to be for safari browsers. The internet is not just safari browsers.

If Google paid all the browsers in the world to use only its search engine, yes then it would be a crooked move.

Frankly I don't see why Google would even need to pay apple.

Internet seems to be the only way to escape the dreary ui of apple.

Of course people are going to prefer Google search.

When you said "...If Google paid all the browsers... then yes.."

you partly answered the question you asked.

As for how the Competition Commission of India or the anti-trust laws in Europe, North America work;

you know how the 'net neutrality' debate panned out here too, right?

Just next doors, in Pakistan, telecom operators are allowed to offer (cheap) whatsapp only packs.
People there (in some of the +92 managed news groups, drama/serial groups I have seen) entirely bypass the news portals and TV channels, at times. All PDFs (newspapers), videos (so and so episodes of serials) get whatsapped.

If someone like Jiomart gets exclusive rights in whatsapp to let users proceed with checkout, but other businesses do not, then it stiffles competition.

Same way, Google getting 'beyond' a certain market share (in a political/regional market) gives it an upper edge, even unfair advantage to brute force its way everywhere.

So yes, I might sit on the side of the table where the lawmakers are.
If i am a big business profiteering from it, then yes, I too would be equally irked by the laws.

As for 'why' Google should even pay others to get access to their customers, I really do not know why one would think so.
Apple has a better case in asking for compensation against such access, than deal posters here have for seeking Dime rewards for posting deals.
On a free for use platform which does not even restrict the use of Ad-blockers and supports itself by affiliate commissions them paying even the (deal) spammers sounds funny to some.
Imagine if instead of paying a zillion people to p9st/spam deals
they simply had a handful of on-board, paid deal posters (curated deals).

But no, for wider quicker and complete access to rhe potential market, Google has to and Apple will claim to be remunerated.
