if your google account already has some payment method added, it would auto renew. otherwise, it will fall back to normal account and if total usage is more than normal limit, account will get locked till some things are deleted or google one is purchased.

But it’s a service worth paying for.
I had a paid monthly subscription, cancelled it last month and will continue to pay after July when this timesprime wala ends.
