The branch manager has the authority to waive off such a charge. Try convincing him/her with a solid reason.

I got almost 2k waived off in my case.

None. According to rbi bank cant keep balance in negative for saving account. But don’t deposit anything if you don’t intend to use it.

You never agreed to any credit service so why negative right? So why cibil. Only credit card is affected by cibil.

Still not sure ? Just write an application for account closure and drop in drop box or you can get receiving by giving to bank officer direct or you can email too.
Trust me. Been there done that.

If you didn’t want the account then y did you deposit 1200……?

Just put an account closure request and take receiving….. Either manager will close the account or the account will be dormant….. No need to pay these stupid penalties……

For account closure we need to make it positive, if do not want to close then no need to pay but your -ve amount will be increase month by month.

We may required hdfc in future for any loan so i think its better to pay and close the account.

There is a RBI circular which says saving account should not be charged after zero balance i.e should not go in negative. You can closenegative account(Due to AMB NON maintenance) without paying

Banks are taking undue advantage of ignorant fearful customers.
If you had told them some reason they’d have canceled the charges.
Most customers (98%) don’t care or are afraid which encourages banks to come out with new ways to make money.
These are non-maintenance charges, applicable only if you want to maintain the account. And they won’t affect any score because there is no legal basis.

Big Banks know their days are limited so trying to make money as much as they can.
Soon banks will be entirely electronic, with very few staff. Cards are already getting outdated with mobile emerging as far secure way to identify users. Everything can be done online. RBI is only letting these banks play a role because of employment they generate.

According to the RBI , banks should not take undue advantage of customer difficulty or inattention.
Banks should not levy penal charges for non-maintenance of minimum balances in any inoperative account. When accounts are dormant, there is no service provided and hence ideally there should be no charge.
Banks should also limit the liability of customers in electronic banking transactions in cases where banks are not able to prove customer negligence, the RBI said.

@admin My father had a salary acc with HDFC which later got converted to Savings acc with MAB charges applicable, after he left is job that is. Now, as he was not aware of MAB and other stuff related to that, we are seeing that the balance is showing -4.5K. The home branch is in another state from where we are residing right now. We went to a local HDFC branch to enquire about closure as we do not want to pay the negative balance, but they denied saying we better contact Home branch in this scenario. However, they were ready to close in case we agree to pay the negative balance. Any thoughts what shall we do in this case ?

If you want to close the account then you need to clear the amount and close. In that case they won’t write off your balance.
Best way is to convince and write of that balance, later close the account.

Another way is just leave it and forget that account.

Show them this circular and tell them to fuck off . If they still do not complain to banking ombudsman . If that fails write to RBI.

https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/NotificationUser...

Ps Annex 6 is what you are looking

More consumers are educated less banks will loot

Also my friend had -20k in bal and one fine day he went to withdraw that money sunglasses . Bank manager had pikachu face , his account was closed that day only with no charge

I think -ve balance can be a good thing for example you can save in taxes and if you still get notice then put the blame on hdfc. laughing
