How does the fuel station attendant know your scan & pay payment has actually gone through?

I am starting to see many people using the scan and pay bar codes at the fuel stations.
The attendant fills the fuel, customer scans the bar code sticker on the pump machine, shows the phone screen to the attendant and drives away.
The attendant doesn’t seem to have any phone in his hand to actually confirm if the payment has been received at his end or there has been a payment failure.
How does these fuel stations make sure that someone is not driving away without actually paying?

Yes this is indeed a known one to most but still many fall for it somehow (mostly in small towns).
I have seen print receipt method in many big/ crowded pumps where one needs to scan the QR and a printing machine is being put aside to get the receipt. Once you handover that receipt to the fuel guy and he verifies, you’re ready to go. 
PS: In small places or highways these cases are rampant.. so I always insist the attendant to cross check with their device (for receipt) before let the buyer go.. which they casually nod after hearing a message tone. Sometimes, these naive people need to be educated!
With UPI payments sometimes not getting credited for hours some merchants stopped using them to be sure. Also some people at my place are not accepting UPI for single digit payments, calling it a nuisance.
Are you adopting digital India even for single digit payments?
Have beggars started accepting UPI? 
Fuel being a high value commodity with less profit margin, these fuel stations cannot afford to be careless with this new scan & nod system.

I actually know of an incident at a popular shop where a person stuck his QR code on top of shopkeepers QR code. Was receiving all pymts for a day!
Of course one can establish audit trail but it was quite novel! 😅
It’s the same scam that used to happen at many local stores, where fraudsters used to just show payment success screen and proceed with their stuffs. You might think, it’s just a screenshot scam, but many people have apps (it’s pretty simple to write one), that just takes an input value and shows the payment success screen based on that. Many local store owners didn’t used to check their phone for each transaction and just say ok. This is why nowadays most owners either always check with phone to make sure, or just have that paytm type of speakers that notify the amount paid in the transaction to them.
