hitachi split AC working non stop for 7yrs no refill so far
I have Lloyd split ac from the last 6 years and never refilled the gas till date
My LG window AC has been working fine for the last 10+ years. On the other hand my Godrej split inverter AC required gas refill within four years.
AC is a closed loop system, unless there is a leak somewhere you do not need to refill the gas (refrigerant) ever. AC gas is not consumed, and it also does not reduce based on how much you use your AC.
There is no schedule or need to ever refill the AC gas unless it leaks.
If your AC is colling normally and you scheduled a cleaning service or a normal repair (not related to pipes or compressor), do not let him touch the valves or measure the gas. IT IS A SCAM.
The guest house has been there for long and I have on and off stayed there since 2009.
Even others I have seen no issue in over a decade.
But with window grill ACs one cannot say if it constantly takes rough handling during service or post service reinsertion in the tight slot. The vibrations too can have an adverse impact if the grill and the brackets do not properly support or counter the jerks.
But otherwise, you are mostly right about there not being much loss of volume. Molecules like those of helium are tough to manage. They are known to eventually escape even metallic retention chamber, due to the small size of the molecules.
Thankfully the refrigerant comprises of stuff with large enough molecules and does not escape the copper tubing too, unless the tubing is compromised or the joint welding has issues or cracks develop.
For a split AC, the gas re-filling is required in every 3 to 4 years. Window AC survives up to 8 years without a gas refilling if serviced regularly.
If you are refilling gas every few years, then there is a leak somewhere and it needs to be fixed.

If someone suggest you, do it, then they are either scamming you or they are being scammed themselves.
7 ya 8 saal baad.. rk mechanic aaya tha clean ke liye.. pata nahi kya kya test kiya bola pressure kam hai.. he refilled half for 1500.
But i had no issue cooling.. just service is enough to get cooling.. kat gaya mera shayad.. i feel it dont ever need.. jabtak cleaning sahi se ho rahi.. gas wont be needed untill ac life spam
Btw it is wise to replace my split ac with inverter ac? No issue with ac anyway.. bill ka mamla hai bas....
Yepp this is what they do. They will not even fill anything. They just charge you.
In future if you are not having a colling issue do not let them touch the valves. They can also leave the valves loose so that they can charge you each year.
Service guys (and installation guys) deliberately damage the pipes so that gas leaks and you call them for a refill every year.
As long as the AC coil gets punctured due to corrosion or poor manufacturing quality, regular maintenance, like coating the coil, extends the life of the AC coil.
LG 10+yr
As long as there is no gas leakage.

Yes, you can run AC for 20+ years and never need to refill the gas.

If there is a need to refill the gas then there is a greater problem that needs to be resolved first so that the situation does not replete it self.
The shop owners had made it a business to scam people in the name of gas refill.
During recent colling of my 15 year old car which never had any issues with cooling, I was suggested to change the gas as it might be old.
I stopped going to that service center.
