It is "money laundering", not "money washing".
I believe the origin of that phrase is good ol' US where money obtained via illegal means (say drugs) would need to be put into the banking system. Obviously you cannot take bags of cash to a bank and ask them to put it in your account without alerting the authorities. So, what you do is open one or more laundry stores legally and show that you are actually making one bag of cash every month even though the stores themselves must be making barely a handful of cash. Breaking Bad does a fantastic job of showing this. There are numerous other ways (funding political parties, shell companies etc) but I'd like to avoid an essay here.
