Off topic - This support executives are built different.

I live in tier 1 city.

My sim was originally taken in my cousin name few years back he moved to Europe. My phone got stolen and I tried to get sim the executive were like he has to be physically present, some were ok with vkyc but after talking to manager, same reply no we can't issue sim unless he is physically present. Same was case with 4 different customer care offices ( in same city different locations)

Went to tier 3 City to visit a relative and told about my experience he was like challo,  reissued without any vkyc lol had to shed out 2k. Totally worth it smile

Tier 3 cities/villages have targets to complete so they activate bulk sim or look for similar buyers (& it can all be done at small cost without any kyc )

Now no new/replaced sim can send or receive sms for first 24 hours of activation & unless consent is given on IVR call(by pressing a number) to original sim. This makes any banking fraud based on sim swap impossible unless the victim has almost zero common sense or victim is too old to even check their mobile once in 24 hours.

you're right about 2 or 3 tier city but I think Delhi, Mumbai like city has same condition, just you need to know the right person or right place to get it.

Old age people don't notice 'no network' thing that much that's the issue, also fraudsters now a days follow potential targets they swap when they r out of city /traveling

IVR consent is still required before activation. Also, someone that old who can't even check mobile once in 24 hours should disable all online txn facilities & use only cheques & atm cards or transfer all the money to some post office acc where only offline txns are possible.

This recently happened with one of my relative..  His airtel sim was not working for 4 hours.. and later found 21 lakhs was stolen from their business account..

Airtel said that they got a call to block this number.

They lodged a case on Airtel and the bank... But not sure how to prevent this grimacing

Either your relative is lying(too embarrassed to admit own mistake) or this happened before Nov 2022 when the new rule of no sms service for 24 hours on any new/replaced sim & mandatory ivr confirmation call on original sim for replaced/duplicate sim came into effect. Also, ask your relative to apply for corporate internet banking with at least 2 users & use 2 users authentication for all txns.

Business Accounts got 2FA Device as far as I know.

Or did he enable UPI on a business account?

Nope, they are not from the ones who lie.. If they have lied why would they lodged complaint against airtel.

Yup, this might have happened before November, don't remember the exact date but it was 3-4 months ago..

Then possible. This is also why no business person should run their online business acc in any bank with retail internet banking. There is a reason all banks have a corporate banking option as it is meant for business accs with much more security features. In corp internet banking you can set it so just having one mobile number & otp is not enough, you need 2 different mobile numbers & 2 different otp to execute any txn. You can even set it to more than 2 users depending on your acc type(large corporations have 3-4 authentication levels in their corp internet banking).

Tier 3 cities/ villages usually have no airtel coco store. In order to save money they give franchise to 3rd party to open airtel store. These stores won't offer any  postpaid services only prepaid services are available there these 3rd parties have full power to swap sims. They regularly do these kind of scams to fancy number holders. When a customer approach them for fancy number that is already activated by someone. They will initiate sim swap procedure and ask them to immediately port to BSNL

Now it doesn't matter because all replacement/duplicate sim can only be activated after consent given on IVR call on original sim number by pressing a number & after activation sms service disabled for first 24 hours.

UPI can't transfer more than 1 lakh to other accs in a day. Only neft/rtgs can transfer more than 5 lakhs in a day from any bank acc in India & NEFT takes around 1 hour to settle while RTGS takes around 15-20min. OTP for any NEFT/RTGS txn in itself is 2FA because one needs to login to internet banking first using password which is first factor of authentication. See my above post regarding corporate internet banking.

So, in such situations better to get a physical 2FA Device + Maker/Checker authentication atleast  for corporate/business accounts

What if the original sim stopped working due to faulty chip. How will I replace  sim without IVR call (not possible since original sim not working anymore)?
