HP i3 Laptop. 4 years old. Is it better to upgrade RAM and change hdd to ssd OR buy new Laptop?
My sister is learning SAP but the VMWare is very slow. Also if I open Chrome, the PC becomes quite slow.
I don’t play PC games.

If you can afford to change the laptop, change the laptop. If you want to upgrade the components then go ahead bro. 🙂🙂🙂

I mean, the cheapest laptop that comes with SSD and 8GB RAM costs around 35k. These laptops have almost same configuration except for these two components. So, wouldn’t it be better to just replace these two things rather than buy new one?

When you feel that PC is running quite slow (When you open/use chrome or some other app)..open task manager and check CPU+Memory+Disk Utilization..you should be able to figure out whats the exact issue
About running virtual machines..RAM & disk performance matters more than CPU performance (Its better to have a Quad core CPU over dual core CPUs though like the recent gen i3’s)

In Task Manager, Check if Disk remains >90% and processor around 50% or less, then SSD is useful.
That means processor is not able to utilize its capapacity because of Disk limitation.

VMware or Virtualbox both need seperate processing and RAM in high amount.

Better to buy a desktop rather than laptop.

or buy a real 4 core processor with 8gb ram laptop. Ryzen 3200u laptop can handle VM easily.

My Dell laptop also i3 and 5 years old. I added 4gb ram to the existing 2gb ram and there was drastic change in performance. If you have 4gb or less ram then try it.

Assuming you are using hdd & not ssd then I can assure you that going from hdd to ssd will cause a change in performance at least 2 times more drastic than going from 2 to 6gb ram. smile

Did you think about building a home lab PC if it is feasible? Always would help in the
future.
