If you want to take entertainment route, watch Hollywood movies with proper subtitles. You will get to know different words, and at the same time note or get to know the meaning of those words.

Now the next part is find some one who can speak to and provide feedback or correct you. Without putting the learnings in practise, the learnings is of no use.

PS: I picked up Tamil when I worked in Chennai the above way.

@andromeda really appreciate your suggestions
problem is that i feel movies will take the focus of learning away
also will take time
a song or play can be consumed in few minutes with self involvement
we can be ourself actively engrossed unlike movies

@bikidas2060 Sir Ji kuch apke khayalat is bare me?

Have never tried anything specially to improve English, but a teacher suggested audio books to a friend of mine.
They would serve the purpose in my opinion, give a try once.
No idea about suitable titles for this purpose, you can choose any book as per your interest.

Try to learn from sources without an accent, Hollywood movies are likely to have an American accent which is not necessarily required in India, and some dialogues are so cloudy that even native speakers don’t understand them, so would cause undue stress, only watch movies after building some base.

“No” to Songs
“Yes” to Interviews & Movies/Shows

Just pay attention to Phrasing, pause, stress & variations in pitch.. ( how they’re being used in conversations )
With couple of months of observation and mock trails, you can become fluent enough smile

Movies as suggested above I’ve found is the best way to learn different words. Books are three too and probably much better than movies but as I am not a wise person I don’t read books. Then listen to BBC news as well (that’s what I did in my childhood in the B/W TV era, alongwith swallowing cricket commentaries).

After learning new words comes the most important step. Speaking (again, covered above). Without speaking, no matter how much you have learnt will be useless. You could try to find a friend or two to speak with or do it yourself in front of a mirror.

The main problem with us non native English aspirants is we cannot practice it enough. Thereby when we do speak, that translation which goes in the back of our mind from our native tongue to English, completely kills it. Even after 25 years I face this problem. Therefore, if you want to be fluent, keep practicing and never stop.

Songs, even till date I cannot understand any bloody word they utter. I do not even listen to any songs out of this fear 😃

@ithehappy its the pin point reason, our reluctancy to express our original thoughts
Its the same reluctancy why desidime.com is hesitant to introduce the translation button (pun intended @admin )
But, as everyine has matured enough to have the basic English as our 2nd or 3rd language, we still treat it as a tool to use when we need to either increase or show our achievements in life
As if we say Hey all u people English is now mastered by me, hence all people show me respect yeah….
And we take out the English tool when we need money like a blacksmith or a barber uses his tools
Other than that we crack jokes and socialise using slangs *hinglish, hindustani(urdu+hindi)
