Someone stole my brother's phone while he's trying to board the bus. The phone was switched off within seconds. Tried find my device but no luck it shows old location n ring my phone option also not helpful. Now going to police station for complaining about it. please suggest any useful ideas to find it or block the device

These stolen phones are pretty much useless with lock protection ON (Face/Fingerprint/Pin/Password/Pattern). Its possible to get rid of lock screen security w/ Bootloader unlock + custom recovery but if the device is intact (Locked bootloader + USB Debugging OFF) there's no way for the robbers to make the phones work (w/o replacing motherboards). Even the deep flash cable method isn't working with newer redmi phones AFAIK

Like other suggested just file the FIR as a security precaution and get the sim blocked

Forget about the phone..

Lodge a formal complaint in police station stating both the IMEIs , your phone number etc.

Chance of getting back the phone is next to none.

Change google password and get the sim blocked ASAP.

My luck is always bad except that one time when I lost my phone & got it back after 2 hours from a location 7KM away courtesy google find my device lock msg & an honest guy who found my phone. The most important lesson I learned was to have cloud backup of everything important in the phone so now using apps/options to backup all sms/call logs/messaging apps like WA etc every day.
@beamchota @jennyllwilliams @BlueFlash @magur

P.S. To stop sim fraud now incoming outgoing sms service remains disabled for 24 hours on any replacement/duplicate sim.

My friend lost a brand new iPhone 14 while boarding a bus but nothing can be done once its stolen. It was in malad, Mumbai where incidents of phone theft are pretty common. I was even warned once by a bus conductor to stay away from some boys which were renowned pickpocketers over there.

Stolen iphones can't be used so they are broken apart for their parts to be sold in repairing market.

You mean two active sims with same number? If yes, its not possible (Even for eSim,  sim card gets de-activated)

Just block the sim and get a replacement

same with most android phones as well... all these pickpocketers & their masters know very well that it is now almost impossible to use a stolen phone without being traced, so selling it for parts is now the most preferred path they take...

If it was a Samsung and you can login to https://findmymobile.samsung.com...in from your Brother's account you might be able to get an approximate location even with the phone switched off. It is called off-line finding. Won't pinpoint the exact location but neararound.

Yes, amost all TelCos readily replace lost SIM..

You/ your sibling can be a bit cautious though.

Let the details be on a 'need to know' basis. And the Airtel/ Voda/ Jio store or retailer do not need to know EVERYTHING.

.

Not anymore, but in the past there would be 'harassment' to submit NOC from police or this and that.. if it was disclosed that theft was the cause.

.

Now you can walk-in ..in-person.. to any retailer or company store.

Have a colour photo copy of the original photo ID document or the actual document itself.

.

A live photo (on a white background) will be taken.. of the person on whose name the number is.

.

Official rates for Airtel, Idea are ₹50 only.

.

Third party stores and retailers.. in front of me itself.. have even charged 100₹.

And customers paid for it, despite being told that they could rather go to a main store and get it done for less.

Not to give you false hope, but my cousin got his phone back after 8-10 months with the help of Police. It was stolen from a bus in a tier-3 place in West Bengal.

They actually busted a racket and recovered 1000s of phones that time. He didn't have to do much other than filing a FIR and some visits to the local police station for status enquiry.

Wasn't it either @siddudeagarwal , @deadman or someone like that.. who too got their lost phone back after a couple of years?

.

Obviously it was put on trace.

And luckily some rural family who had found the phone and had it around for over 2-2½ years.. ended up putting a SIM in the phone.

.

The Dimer got alerted (as the police had the IMEIs put on trace with all Indian TelCos).

.

The Dimer even offered some token money, while taking his phone back.

.

So I think, unless the IMEI is somehow replaced/spoofed.. or the phone used on a carrier in some other country... it is very well possible to keep the device on trace.

.

If the phone fascia/ housing, display/folder are really worthwhile.. only then would someone take the pains to cannibalising it for parts.

Else it would be possible that the phone keeps getting passed on.. as it is.

He might have warned you, but he was still helping 'them'.. and was an accomplice.

.

Noticing that you were not carrying any high end device or jewellery.. he did not want 'the boys' getting distracted by you or to waste their time to evaluate you.

.

The conductor wanted 'them' to rather remain focussed on higher value targets!

Sorry😔 to know that Sid!

There was/is someone else here. I think from Kerala or nearby and who had some AirBNB listings related topics.
Maybe it was he... who got the phone back like so.

My Phone has a feature called without my phone password/pin it will not POWER OFF Or Switch Off and whenever I am travelling 99% Chances "My Data Will be ON" and one more thing by swiping down My Internet or Any Other functions cannot be turned on/off without opening my phone Password/PIN.

Also,Most of the time I turned on my location for various reasons like Google Maps,OLA,Uber or Food near me so it's a WIN WIN Situation for me in these Robbery Cases. Finding my phone feature is good for me. Also, there is a SIM LOCK/ UNLOCK Feature in our phone even in NOKIA too Old ones where you can create a PIN for your SIM to turn it on while Switching ON. My phone bootloader is locked and phone is not rooted, device is IQOO NEO 6

Yes (+ No predictable Pin/Password/Pattern like 0000,1234 ..). One can try factory reset but still device won't get past the booting sequence without valid pin/pattern input

any smartfone can be switched off/restart by holding the power button for more than 10 seconds. one more thing nowadays the back cover of the phone can be easily removed and disconnect the battery.

also, with the help of test point, modified custom rom can be installed with qpst qualcomm 9008 mode.

@Mufasa I have also heard that except iphones & samsung top end galaxy S series, most other android phones can be flashed using "special tools/software" even if bootloader is locked.
