Name correction in PAN

Thanks to an agent, my wife's last name is spelt wrong and divided into two parts in her PAN card resulting in FirstName MiddleName LastName format instead of just FirstName LastName. All her documents including Aadhaar have her name as FirstName L (last name as initial).

In this scenario how do we remove the incorrect middle name and get the correct last name? Unfortunately, we don't have any document that has expanded last name. From my experience, even without documentary evidence when an individual files a new PAN request, NSDL sets the last name as the one entered in the form. But I doubt if they would take a correction request here.

Has anyone faced a similar issue?

We are having issues with Zerodha now. This is a case of name correction but they are considering it as a name change and demanding a passport copy/gazette notification that we do not have. Escalating to the customer care head got a response stating any other proof than Aadhaar is accepted as per CDSL. On pointing out that we already submitted the PAN having the corrected name, they added PAN to the not accepted document list.

I have now written to CDSL seeking help. Does anyone have any experience dealing with similar issues?

Today we got the e-PAN with the corrected name. As mentioned above, online did not work and I speed-posted the form and documents. Thank you very much, @Demon_slayer @HasdaChehra @Adamantium

So how did they process it? Firstname Initial or firstname lastname

@HasdaChehra @Demon_slayer the online approach did not work. I tried today and it was instantly rejected citing a name mismatch. Therefore, I decided to go for offline mode and speed-posted the application.

What you say is correct, @Adamantium - even to expand the initial a proof is required which we don't have. Therefore I am trying my luck with the offline mode by sending them the form. The online request gets rejected.

You don't need to do much. Just apply for pan online using your wife's aadhar details. Expand the lastname in the lastname field.

Put firstName L in what you want to be printed.

You are done.

My dad's first name was split into two followed by the surname and it remained so for many years. Never had any problems until last year when the bank informed about the mistake and asked him to correct it. Since my dad's name was correctly spelled with no mistakes on his aadhar & all other government documentd, it was just a matter of online application for name correction on PAN with aadhar as proof & within 10 days he received his PAN with the correction.

Since your wife's name is different in PAN (expanded) & aadhar (with last name initial) there could be some problems later in life. On PAN, surname cannot be an initial but must be expanded. However, you can have an abbreviated name printed on your PAN but you must submit your full name when filling out the application form. PAN application for correction requires you to submit a copy of your aadhar and I'm not sure if what you said about Nsdl only using the name mentioned in the form is correct or not. You can give it a try online & see if your application is accepted. I'd advice to get your wife's last name changed to expanded form in her aadhar first & then apply for name correction in PAN. This will also eliminate the issue of PAN -aadhar linking which for different names reason fails quite often. Having different names with and without initials in your PAN & aadhar will cause problems later in banks & other government offices.

I think you can match pan card name with aadhar proof online.
