Hello Friends,

Need suggestion from you regarding following situation.

I am in UAE and using Virgin 5G internet plan. It is cheapest option Vs existing etisalat or du.

Right now I am using S23 as Hotspot but it affects battery. So thinking of buying either new or used mobile as Hotspot OR dedicated 5G router.

I am wondering which mobiles will be good for this. Must be 5G.

5G routers are costly , min 5k for resale and 15k for new (Oppo CPE). I feel paying this much for router is not worth.

Buying phone in India is good as I can sell it later.

Please suggest.

I am thinking of buying M34 but prices have gone up in India. Almost 18-19k , my cousin bought it for 14.5k and friend for 13.7k in last sale.

In UAE , M34 is available for ~ 15k , A34 for ~ 18k.

Samsung S-seies  since last year come with the option to enable bypass charging which AFAIK only works during gaming. But some dimers and TG users had mentioned that charging could be enabled to stop at 85% and presumably it doesn't charge any further even when plugged in. If true this should not cause any extra stress on the battery. To get this feature working I have to root my (Xiaomi) devices and despite several years (~7 years ) of fairly heavy hotspot use battery life is as good as can be expected. To clarify once the battery reaches the desired level say 60% it doesn't  fluctuate at all as long as it's plugged in. There are no micro-cycles. This might not be possible in all Xiaomi devices. I know that it couldn't be enabled in the ill-fated Poco X3 Pro but it has worked in all my Xiaomi devices going back to 2016

A couple of somewhat recent Xiaomi devices (SD732G and  SD870) exhibited the unique ability to enter Deep Sleep(60% of the time) while serving as a hotspot resulting in very low idle drain, 2%/h (over a complete ODI match) . It looks like it's an SoC level feature that's not leveraged by most OEMs.

My Poco F4 lost the aforementioned feature after the A13, MIU 14 update. Since I haven't rooted it yet the best compromise for now is to use a 1A charger. This ensures a long charging time and prevents battery drain during that time. USB 2.0 and the 0.5A max. output wasn't sufficient during heavy downloads over high-speed 5G causing the battery to discharge despite being plugged in and USB Tethering enabled instead of Wireless hotspot.

Edit: Buying a replacement battery if necessary in the future can be less expensive than buying a new device? In case of Poco F4 the battery costs far less than any previous F-series device so I am not too concerned about the battery health unlike say my F1 which I rooted and enabled bypass charging as soon as I could figure it out.

Could you share some links on how to enable bypass charging, I'm askin instead of googling as you have tried and tested some methods so gives me the confidence to give it a go. I wanted to try on redmi k50i or redmi note 9 pro

Wifi 6 support  does that make much difference when mobile is working as Hotspot.

I find that S23 when used as Hotspot has excellent range and speed.

I am getting unlocked Chinese 5G Sim routers for cheap. ~ 4.5k I feel that could be better option than using phone.
