been recently using netmonster to force my phone to use 5g for periods of time.
Network: jio
When used, the voice calls are not audible on this end but they can hear on the other end.
Is there anyway to get around this?

It's a 5g phone. Phones choose 5g or 4g bands based on best availability.
App like this can force your phone to use 5g eventhough 4g is stronger in your area.

Not All Areas Support VONR (Voice Over New Radio)
In My Town On 5g , If Some One Call Me It Switch To 4g.
In Hyd Only Some Areas While On Call It Stays In 5g... While On Call We Did Speed Test Showing Nearly 600mbps Speed

The company was fully a 4g network. It makes sense they rely on their tried and tested product to deliver the service more than new 5g technology.

Jio issue
Still they switch back to 4G network when making or receiving calls automatically.
So choose both networks if you switch between calls and data usage.
