A court in Uttarakhand has sentenced a Patanjali official and two others to six months in jail after samples taken from the Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Soan Papdi (a traditional sweet) failed a quality test. In September 2019, the District Food Safety Officer of Pithoragarh collected the samples from a shop in Berinag Market after concerns were raised about the product.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Pithoragarh, Sanjay Singh sentenced Abhishek Kumar, Assistant General Manager of Patanjali Food and Herbal Park, Laksar; Ajay Joshi, Assistant Manager of Kanha Ji Distributor Private Limited Ramnagar; and shopkeeper Leeladhar Pathak to six months imprisonment under Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
The court fined Patanjali Ayurveda Limited and Ajay Joshi Rs 10,000 each, while Abhishek Kumar was asked to pay Rs 25,000 and Pathak Rs 5,000.
The samples collected from Leeladhar Pathak's shop on September 17, 2019 were sent to a testing lab in Rudrapur.
The test results revealed the product's substandard quality, following which the District Food Safety Officer registered cases against the three men.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate court further said that if the three accused fail to serve their sentences, they will have to serve additional imprisonment of 7 days to 6 months, respectively.
The development comes as Patanjali is embroiled in the misleading advertisements case.
The Supreme Court has reserved its order on contempt notices issued to yoga guru Baba Ramdev and others in the case. It has also exempted Baba Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved managing director Acharya Balkrishna from physical presence in court hearings.

The interim stay is being imposed with immediate effect on the basis of a preliminary inquiry report of a high level committee, Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Secretary Ayush, Uttarakhand government said in an order.

The Firms Had Challenged The Last Month's Suspension Order Of The Uttarakhand State Licensing Authority.

"Since the licence has been cancelled without following the procedure established by law, the committee is submitting its report to the government of Uttarakhand for appropriate decision," it said.
The State Licensing Authority, Ayurvedic and Unani Services had suspended the manufacturing licence of 14 Patanjali products last month under Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1945 and Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954.

The medicines whose manufacturing licence had been suspended included Swasari Gold, Swasari Vati, Bronchom, Swasari Pravahi, Swasari Avaleh, Mukta Vati Extra Power, Lipidom, BP Grit, Madhugrit, Madhunashini Vati Extra Power, Livamrit Advance, Livogrit, Eyegrit Gold and Patanjali Drishti Eyedrop.

Notably there's no provision to recall the drugs whose licenses have been cancelled. They will continue to be sold to the unsuspecting public until they are exhausted. CDSCO couldn't devise a drug recall mechanism 44 years after it was first mooted.

Amla Juice, Giloy Juice, dantkanti, and Drishti eye drops]- these are the products I regularly used in college days, but one day came across a supplier of Giloy and reality hit me hard. Never bought these again and maintained a distance from Patanali
These products are made with very sub-standard raw materials with almost zero research & testing, products are passed by paying heavy bribes and using influence.
Patanjali ke sabbi fruit and veg and amla and karela and aloe vera and neem ke juices peye hain and pee raha hoon peechle das saal se bhai. Kuch nahi hua. Patanjali thoda gir gaya to sab upar chad rahe hain unko neeche rakhne ko. Hogi problem unke products main par aisa bhi nahi hai ke bilkul hi kharab hain.
