Keep your dignity.

Being strong doesn’t mean you have to stay and fight all the battles and petty arguments that come your way. Being strong means don’t have to stay and respond to rude remarks. Don’t retort by throwing insults back at them. It’s what they want. Keep your dignity and don’t lower yourself to their level. True strength is being adult enough to walk away from the nonsense with your head held high

The Two Seas

The Dead Sea is really a Lake, not a sea Its so high in salt content that the human body can float easily. You can almost lie down and read a book! The salt in the Dead Sea is as high as 35% – almost 10 times the normal ocean water. And all that saltiness has meant that there is no life at all in the Dead Sea. No fish. No vegetation. No sea animals. Nothing lives in the Dead sea.

And hence the name: Dead Sea.

While the Dead Sea has remained etched in my memory, I don’t seem to recall learning about the Sea of Galilee in my school Geography lesson. So when I heard about the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea and the tale of the two seas – I was intrigued. Turns out that the Sea of Galilee is just north of the Dead Sea. Both the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea receive their water from river Jordan. And yet, they are very, very different.

Unlike the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee is pretty, resplendent with rich, colorful marine life. There are lots of plants. And lots of fish too. In fact, the sea of Galilee is home to over twenty different types of fishes.

Same region, same source of water, and yet while one sea is full of life, the other is dead. How come?

Here apparently is why. The River Jordan flows into the Sea of Galilee and then flows out. The water simply passes through the Sea of Galilee in and then out – and that keeps the Sea healthy and vibrant, teeming with marine life.

But the Dead Sea is so far below the mean sea level, that it has no outlet. The water flows in from the river Jordan, but does not flow out. There are no outlet streams. It is estimated that over a million tons of water evaporate from the Dead Sea every day. Leaving it salty. Too full of minerals. And unfit for any marine life.

The Dead Sea takes water from the River Jordan, and holds it. It does not give. Result? No life at all.

Think about it.

Life is not just about getting. Its about giving. We all need to be a bit like the Sea of Galilee.

We are fortunate to get wealth, knowledge, love and respect. But if we don’t learn to give, we could all end up like the Dead Sea. The love and the respect, the wealth and the knowledge could all evaporate. Like the water in the Dead Sea.

If we get the Dead Sea mentality of merely taking in more water, more money, more everything the results can be disastrous. Good idea to make sure that in the sea of your own life, you have outlets. Many outlets. For love and wealth – and everything else that you get in your life. Make sure you don’t just get, you give too. Open the taps. And you’ll open the floodgates to happiness.

Make that a habit. To share. To give.

And experience life. Experience the magic!

Six Tips for Tough Times

Tough times can bring you to your knees. They can also raise you to new heights.

You can be stressed to the max on a bad day, yet, as long as life seems manageable, you don’t usually look for new strategies to get through it. The tendency is to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, grit your teeth and keep on going. During prolonged or sudden tough times, though, normal defense mechanisms are not enough to keep you from feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed.

It’s when events are overwhelmingly beyond your control, that you either find new ways to cope or are pulled down by the undertow. Your usual defenses are inadequate to protect from overwhelming long-term stress. Stress can build gradually beyond tolerance level, or a surprising turn of events like those recently reported in the news can create the kind of vulnerability that demands openness to change.

The soft inner core of your being feels exposed. This exposure opens a crack in the old armor through which an opportunity for renewed life can shine.

Here are six tips that can help you thrive in tough times? .

Nourish Yourself – Let go of the bootstraps for a few moments, acknowledge your stress and be kind to yourself. What nourishes you – inspirational reading, music, a cup of tea …? Are there people or places, a favorite chair or spot in nature that provide sustenance? Make nurturing yourself every day a priority.

Stay Present – Don’t project ahead. Take life one day, one moment at a time. Tough times are more manageable when you pay attention to making decisions and taking action on only the next step. Fearful preoccupation or worries about dire imagined future possibilities can leave you open to illness, accidents and errors in judgment that compound your problems. Scale down, simplify your activities and concentrate your precious energy supply on only what is critically important right now.

Accept Support – This can be difficult for people who prize self-sufficiency. Remember it is as virtuous to receive, as it is to give. Without the receiver, the giver has no way to share their abundant gifts. Don’t deprive your friends and family of the pleasure to help you when you need it. Shared burdens provide opportunities for enhanced closeness and appreciation for one another.

Trust Your Resilience – Chances are you have been through tough times before. What natural strengths did you rely upon in those situations? How did you make it through adolescence, Childbirth, Marriage, Divorce, School, First job? What are your natural inner resources? Trust that you have what you need to see this tough time through. Visualize Success – See yourself moving into a new chapter of life. How do you want to write that chapter? Creation begins in the imagination. If you can think it, you can create it. In order to be free to dream and hope for something new, you must let go of old visions, descriptions and limitations of the person you think you are or can become.

Forgive Past Errors – Forgive past hurts, and people who may have inflicted them, knowingly or unknowingly. This is not out of kindness to them, rather out of kindness to you. After all, you are the one carrying the burden of these hurts. Forgive yourself for mistakes or paths not taken. Release the burden of the past so you can travel lighter in the present.

In times of crisis and radical change, remember that living means growing. I have never seen anything in nature grow backward. So, as bad as you feel, and as much as you doubt it, if you are alive you are growing.

Growth is creative. So, take advantage of the opportunity in these tough times to re-create your life by nourishing yourself, staying present, accepting support, trusting your resilience, visioning possibilities and letting go of the past and perceived limitations.

Even though tough times are hard, they can also be the best times to explore ways to live more harmoniously with yourself and others.

If you’re drinking energy drinks for the reason most people do — to get more energy; know that there are far superior options than artificial energy drinks.
Humans are not naturally sluggish or constantly tired. This lethargic state is something that many of us have brought on ourselves.

Your lack of energy is likely due to a combination of factors including:

Poor food choices
Low-quality food
Stressful lifestyle
Negative emotions
Lack of sleep
Lack of exercise

Increasing your energy levels, then, is as easy as remedying these factors by:
Eating right for your nutritional type
Increasing your intake of omega-3 fats
Eliminating grains and sugars from your diet
Releasing emotional stress and negativity with the Emotional FreedomTechnique (EFT)
Sleeping when you’re tired
Exercising

Expectations!!!

A turtle family decided to go on a picnic. Turtles, being naturally slow about things, took seven years to prepare for their outing. Finally the turtle family left home looking for a suitable place. During the second year of their journey they found a place ideal for them at last!

For about six months they cleaned the area, unpacked the picnic basket, and completed the arrangements. Then they discovered they had forgotten the salt. A picnic without salt would be a disaster, they all agreed. After a lengthy discussion, the youngest turtle was chosen to retrieve the salt from home. Although he was the fastest of the slow moving turtles, the little turtle whined, cried, and wobbled in his shell. He agreed to go on one condition: that no one would eat until he returned. The family consented and the little turtle left.

Three years passed and the little turtle had not returned. Five years…six years… then on the seventh year of his absence, the oldest turtle could no longer contain his hunger. He announced that he was going to eat and begun to unwrap a sandwich. At that point the little turtle suddenly popped out from behind a tree shouting, “See! I knew you wouldn’t wait. Now I am not going to go get the salt.”

Moral of the Story:

Some of us waste our time waiting for people to live up to our expectations of them. We are so concerned about what others are doing that we don’t do anything ourselves. Often we wait for people to make , what we think are, mistakes so that we can ‘get back’ at them. Its a mindless and fruitless exercise doing so. You do the right thing without waiting for people to do what you think is their bit…

Create a life that feels good on the inside not one that just looks good on the outside.

Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard, then succeed on purpose.

Happiness is not determined by what’s happening around you,
but rather what’s happening inside you.

Death is happening at every moment. Yesterday is dead. And you are born today in the present. Death has never an enemy. Real enemy is your non-acceptance of the flow of life and your rigidity on how life should be. You have treated death as an end of life; in fact it is a door to a new beginning. Be happy with the door and do not bang yourself against the door.

A man was riding on the horse sitting towards its tail. His wife saw him and screamed at him: “you are stupid; you have abused this beautiful gift I gave you.” The husband answered; “you are a stupid and you gave me a stupid horse; it is going in the wrong direction and I am seated in the right direction where I have to go.” People have an answer in spite of being wrong. An answer does not change our lives, but living and acting wisely does. We would have come across many who say, ‘I am God fearing!’ This is nonsense. We should love God, not fear Him!’ It should be ‘God loving’ not ‘God fearing!’

Swami Vivekananda said, ‘Be fearless. If there is one word that you find coming like a bomb from the Upanishads, bursting like a bomb-shell upon masses of ignorance, it is the word, fearlessness’.
Some go from one astrologer to another with their horoscopes to find out when death would strike them. As far as they are concerned, their horoscopes are ‘horrorscopes.’ Such people are more afraid of when they would die rather than what they would do while being alive! This fear would devastate them both mentally and physically!

While talking about mortal fear, Rabindranath Tagore said, ‘Long before you were born in this world, compassionately, God made sure that there was milk in both the breasts of your mother. He may well have created another for you after your death! Who knows? So, have faith!’

We can only advise all those who are afraid…plan for your future; there is no harm in that. But your fear about the future would only ruin your happiness.

In order to protect your wealth, plan where to keep it safe; without doing any of these things is meaningless.

Instead of conjuring images of fearful events like ‘What if I fail in the examinations? And thus spending time weakening yourself, use it fruitfully to prepare and pass in the examination! Life is a series of examinations; we need to pass them with flying colours. This is a gift we can offer to God.

Two Traveling Angels……

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family.

The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement.

As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what they seem.”

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife.

After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel, “How could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him.” – she accused. “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.”

“Things aren’t always what they seem.” – the older angel replied.

“When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later…

Should you find it hard to get to sleep tonight,
remember the homeless family who has no bed to lie in.

Should you find yourself stuck in traffic, don’t despair,
there are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard-of privilege.

Should you have a bad day at work,
think of the man who has been out of work for many months struggling to feed his family.

Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror,
think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine.

Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering what is life all about, asking, “What is my purpose?”, be thankful, there are those who didn’t live long enough to get the opportunity

Tension….Tension

Certain incidents make us so tense…our blood vessels reach a bursting point because of them. Most often we get flustered that our limbs begin to tremble! The heart throbs so loudly that a person even standing one foot away can hear it clearly! We experience fear so strong and inexplicable that t makes us feel as though we were drowning in a dark sea of troubles. All this is due to tension.

Many times, we get tense on trivialities.

Here is an example –

A professor was transferred to another collage. In order to see him off, four of his colleagues had come to the railway station with him. As there was still time for departure, the professors standing on the platform, began to chat. They were so engrossed in their conversation that they did not realise that the train had begun to move.

Suddenly flustered, they decided to jump into the train. Without even bothering about which compartment they were getting into, the four of them struggled to with the crowd and somehow entered the compartment. Their idea was to move into the correct compartment in the next station.

But one professor holding his luggage in his hands was unable to board the train. A passer-by consoled him saying, ‘Don’t worry! In another ten minutes the next train would come. You can board that one.’

The professor replied, ‘I know there is another train after ten minutes….I am not worried about myself! I am only worried about my colleagues. They came to see me off; in the process, they have all boarded the train by mistake!’

This is how tension and agitation make us lose track of even simple matters. When we are agitated, no matter how hard we work to accomplish some task, the net result would just be zero.
How to be calm?

Just be a witness to your thoughts. Don’t identify with them. See them as clouds in the sky of your awareness. Thoughts will come and go; but you don’t come and go. You are just a witness. Then the mystery of calmness happens.
