Hi Dimers,
Issue:
My phone Samsung M31 started restarting after installing an update, around 2nd Oct, 2022.
Service Centre Visit:
I visited Samsung Care, and they said that motherboard needs to be replaced with 7k price. To which I argued that it's happened due to installing updates, so they should be liable to fix it or provide discount. To which they asked me to contact customer care.
Customer Care:
1-2 days after I contacted the CC on this and they created a request and said would call in the next few days with updates, but nothing happened even after a week. I contacted them again and this time the executive said that he can't do anything as the device is out of warranty.
Later I searched on the internet for solution, and came across some youtube videos regarding many Samsung devices having similar issue and users facing this paid motherboard replacement.
https://r2.community.samsung.com/t5/Tech-Talk/A...
Many people got their motherboard replaced free of cost or with discount.
Samsung CEO:
I contacted Samsung CEO too as suggested in above topic, to which they called and asked to go to Samsung centre again and they will generate some report on the device condition, I did and they called again a few days later to do another visit for another set of inspections, which I did too.
Now, the reports were fine, for which they called a few days later and said that they understand the issue but can't offer discount or free replacement on the motherboard as Samsung doesn't have a policy on such issues. To which I was like then why 2 times the device inspection was done, but she couldn't offer anything and said that if in future any such policy comes, she will contact.
Help from Dimers:
Now the help I want from Dimers is what can I do next to get Samsung to fix the device?
Or if someone had such experience, and got it fixed from local repair shops then please share the cost and the experience.
Thank you.
Never update samsung mid ranges after 1 year kf lahnch date... Now only way is to either pay or fight in consumer court...
Mine s20 plus was destroyed in similar manner

try installing lower version @Limbo
go to local market for soldering some joints. Max 500 -700 for this work.
Exynos 9610/9611 generates too much heat during update install and the circuit gets damaged. no need to change mother board for this small issue.
@Original yeah, will not buy Samsung again, really pathetic.

I will try giving the phone to local repair shop, but before that shall I try Consumer Court? I have never tried that before, and not sure if the time invested there would be fruitful. What do you guys suggest on this?

even this judgement I do not know how many respect; bcos court can impose fine only to Samsung for not following order which is peanuts for them

Samsung purposefully creates issues through updates after 1.5 years from device launch. Better to stay away from their updates and sometimes can't skip.
Nothing can be done now until unless expert who can downgrade or reset OS to sealed box version, which is very tough.
This is cheating by Samsung!
Shouldn't trouble their customers like this and they definitely see the consequences of it.
Same Model M31. My brother's mobile got stuck at boot logo.
Initially i thought this may due to software issue. So I tried to flash new firmware using odin, software flashed successfully by odin but mobile not booted. Stuck at the logo again.
I called nearest service center, straight away they told your mother board damaged. Asked 7.5K to change.
Now its clear that Samsung doing this intentionally. 😥

I always advise to unlock bootloader as soon as you get your new phone.
In case of a botched update you can then easily flash and fix your phone's firmware even for a hard bricked device.
I have very little info about samsung devices but in case of xiaomi or other non samsung devices it's easy to fix this kind of errors.
Generally this kinda botched update could be fixed in any android device by flashing any working firmare via edl mode.
This service centre guys are jokers.
If you are not familiar with the process, go to any experienced mobile software guy, he will be able to flash the firmware via edl and may charge you around 1000 rs.

Same reason, not updating my device from last 4-6 months
I flash custom firmware the same day I get the phone delivered.
In my experience custom firmwares really increase longievity of the devices.
Using Mi A2 for ~4 years , And my dad poco F1 without a single issue with custom roms.
And both still perform like new.

But dont have the expertise for the same

I really want to go to consumer court too but I am thinking about the time and effort it might take.
On the other hand I am thinking if it can be repaired locally with 1-2k cost, which would certainly be an easier choice.
I will have a think on going to consumer court and If I plan to go then I guess I will need to keep the device as is (not get repaired locally) for long.

Yeah, it's frustrating to face something like this. And to think of how many customers have faced this and might have paid for the motherboard is terrible on Samsung's end, and nothing has happened to them on this accord 😡
For rest of the Dimer Friends,
I was not aware otherwise would not have opted for the updates, and I am not aware of unlocking firmware and other related things. Now it's in the past, but I will definitely look into this for any of the new phone I get.
Damn. My 2nd October update went fine. No issues till now on my M51. It’s a 2020 launched phone. I just disabled auto-update and won’t update from now on.

Don't waste your time with consumer court, we as customers cannot prove that a software update fried the motherboard (Only Samsung can*). The issue isn't limited to Samsung, a lot of brands demand motherboard replacement even though there's a possibility of getting the device fixed by firmware downgrade is pretty high (They also suggest mb replacement even during the warranty period. It doesn't matter to the service center guys, they're just trying to make their life easy)
Like @ZNZ suggested, get the bootloader unlocked (but just before the warranty period ends*). Custom rom development won't be great (There's unofficial TWRP recovery and couple of unofficial roms based on A12/A13 for M31). I'm not sure if you can rollback to prev firmware though (Just like many brands, samsung also seem to have enabled Anti-rollback on their phones)
PS: Samsung recently announced that they're going to fix out-of-warranty S20 displays for free in select regions. Many users all over the world started facing this very soon after updating their phones to Android 12/One UI 4.0. Not sure if the bulk failure convinced samsung to do this / because S20 belongs to their premium lineup but somehow it happned (Still, they haven't admitted that a software update caused this)
