My mom is stuttering/slurring since morning today, never had the slightest problem in speech. She feels she is not able to move her tongue properly, leading to lost words and stuttering. Could it be tongue paralysis? She has persistent high BP since several years. She is 60+
I’m planning to visit a general physician in the evening today.
Any suggestions about what it could be or if I should visit some specialist?

@MSDfan @mas143forever guys please help if possible 🙂
Thanks for the tag….
As she is a known case of hypertension, it looks like a stroke. @cocay get immediate medical help & glad that you are doing. I sincerely hope that I am proved wrong & wishing her a speedy recovery.
Look like High BP is culprit.
was she taking properly medicines for high BP?
Best wishes!
Usually she does but doesn’t bother much if she misses one or two occasionally. Dad has already left for doctor with mom.
Wishing she recovers soon.. all the best..
Even when we’re buying a crappy mobile, we look at 2-3 different sites for reviews and opinions, so when it comes to serious issues like us or our cared ones, the moment you feel you’re not satisfied, always consult another doctor.
One doc is never enough, no matter how reputed, specially when you’re not convinced.
I hope he’s correct but there’s no harm in taking a second opinion for your satisfaction.
One free advice….plz night mein oil se head message kar dena….it feels good….she will b fine soon.
Get manual one to measure for accuracy
Stroke – Stroke IS an EMERGENCY. If one feels he is having a stroke, he should be taken to a hospital straight away.
Risk factors – Old age, Hypertension, Diabetes, Smoking, etc are risk factors for Stroke.
Symptoms – Sudden inability to speak, loss of power in hand, inability to walk, facial drooping, sudden blindness, etc. All these are symptoms. and should reach hospital immediately. All of these could be present simultaneously, or may develop gradually one after another.
Time – it is of utmost importance because the stroke patient has to be treated within ~4 hours ( this includes all check up, CT, and thrombolysis in case of ischaemic stroke). so do not waste time if one has such symptoms. straight away head to a hospital ( not a small clinic etc without such facilities who will have to refer it to a hospital and precious time could be lost in the whole process)
It could be Transient ischaemic stroke, in which case, the symptoms will resolve within few minutes on hours on its own. But that does not mean all is well. In fact, this means that the patient has been warned for a future full fledged stroke. Hence, treatment will be initiated, and the patient will be put on a lifelong antiplatelet therapy.
If a patient develops all these symptoms while being awake, then time the key and prognosis will be better if acted quickly. But if the patient woke up with these symptoms (after an overnight sleep), then it might have been very late already, in which case the prognosis will be very poor. So keep the expectations accordingly.
@cocay – Keep all this in mind for future. I have written this so that others could also keep these things in mind, and act fast when encountered with such a scenario.
Thanks for the detailed inputs, will keep all in mind. The first doctor has suggested an MRI after 3 days if the slurring doesn’t improve with the prescribed medication.
We are also consulting another doctor tomorrow for another opinion.
hope your mom recovers soon
Go to the doctor who listens to you well in calm way and then acts accordingly
Stay away from those who are in hurry burry
Here’s the CT scan report. Can anyone help understand anything abnormal in this? The doctor said there isn’t anything abnormal and the slurring will improve on its own but may take any amount of time. Right now, my mom’s condition is stabilized but slurring exists.
I’m a physician, not a neurologist.
The CT tells that there was blockage in blood supply in small vessels and some infarts, meaning tissue death in those areas. It was a small stroke which presented as slurred speech.
Slurred speech generally gets better but can take time. Speech therapy can also help.
Main thing is to find the reason why it happened and treat that thing, so that it doesn’t happen again. I hope the treating doctor did that. If not, get her evaluated properly for the cause.
Many dimers have already posted their honest opinions and suggestions. Nothing spl to say from side after reading all comments. But i can pray almighty God for your mom to get well soon.
Make her to lead stress free life atleast for a month
Make her to walk in terrace in morning and evening time (with slight sunlight exposure)
Ask her to drink enough water
Reduce Salt, Oil, Spicy foods, Non-veg dishes.
Provide her Tender coconut on alternative days, if she has diabetes reduce it to twice per week. Banana also good for BP. (Try Red banana)
Practice her pranayama atleast.
God will do the best for her and your whole family.. ! Take Care
Paralysis. Go to doctor urgent
