Tips and Tricks for Financial safety from Cyber Scams

Hi All,
IÂ would like to share how IÂ stay protected from the most cyber frauds:
IÂ have two phone number - one for financial accounts and another one for all others.
The first phone number
- Only registered with bank accounts, credit cards, mutual funds, and all other financial accounts.
- It doesn't have any social accounts i.e. WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, etc.
- Not shared to anyone.
- Deregistered from True caller every month. IÂ have a reminder for the same.
The second phone number
- Is not connected to any financial accounts.
- Has social accounts WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, etc.
- Shared with friends/family/office.
- Deregistered from True caller every month. I have a reminder for the same.
- Don't share the number over the counter for billing such as supermarket etc. Now a days most of the shops ask for phone number while billing. There is a recent news that they shouldn't but they are still the practise.
Workflow
- Whenever I receive a call on the second phone number which is related to loads/credit cards/UPIÂ payments/insurance etc. IÂ immediately disconnect it without wasting anytime.
- If anyone wants to send me money via UPI payments, I always share UPI ID and not the phone number if needed. Otherwise QR code.
- Only use PayTM Wallet and PayTM Payment Bank for all the UPI and Wallet transactions. Maintain 5K in each account.
- The other bank accounts (including salary) are not used lined to UPI. This ensures that even if a fraud happens, it will be via PayTM wallet or PayTM Payment Bank. So, IÂ can only loose 10k in a scam and not more.
Cons
IÂ need to keep two number actives and recharge them annually(1800 plans).
Pros
Peace of mind, no need to worry about scams.
Please feel free to advice or suggest if you have any other tips.
Hope it will help people from cyber scams.

True caller de-registration doesn't work. Dnds too don't work.Â
These tricks are for a specific age group and for those who got too much wela time on hand. Can't expect seniors or youngsters (or even normal people) to keep 2/3 numbers and dance around.

Safety and convenience need a balance. I put safety above convenience, hence thought of sharing.
- The audience for these tricks is fellow dimers.
- Only need to maintain two numbers.
Feel free to ignore if you don't find these interesting.
We cannot keep 2 numbers due to minimum recharge policy.
Now even vi discontinued 99 plan
I have decided to deactivate my 2nd number permanently.

Being cautious does not mean someone has wella time , such carelessness wont leave a dhella in such people's  account .
The post is about how   we can Try to be safe from scams atleast from our side .
Delink from UPI is really smart,
Since cyber researchers predict there will be a lot of UPI Scams and Frauds...
(some happening now too, where ppolice block account and demand money to unblock)

Don't activate UPI number feature on any UPI app and don't use <mobile Number>@upi handle. Because scammers usually send money to any random mobile number. Use any custom UPI handle so that no one can send you money by knowing your mobile number only.
I follow very simple process...
Dont fall for offers.Â
Phone number is linked to a UPI account which even if hacked wont have much loss (Same followed for wife)
for parents online banking/UPI etc is disable Â

Why will scammer sent money ?? IÂ will happily accept that moneyÂ

That's the latest scam.Â
Scammers will send money in your account then they will call you and ask to reverse the amount. Suppose you send the money on their request then they will file chargeback dispute in their bank and then bank can reverse that transaction or freeze your account. Mostly scammers use others' bank account or credit card to send money. So real owner of account will raise dispute for that transaction in most cases.
You can find many articles on internet on this topic.

As I said..I will happily accept such money... Not returning 🤣

It's not about returning money.
Suppose scammers sent money using my account or card to your account.
Now I'll raise dispute and report to cyber crime. Now they can freeze your account and reverse that transaction.
So you will get nothing even if you don't return that money.. but trouble for yourself 🙂

this could be risky? if we are not using our own number, can someone else not use it?

No
No one can use others' mobile number in UPI handle.
It doesn't allow 10 digit number other than your own mobile number.

Good approach, @sliced Â
- My high-value account has UPI disabled and is linked to a second phone number which is kept at home.Â
- I wanted to equally divide my accounts between numbers but found it impractical due to my approach of having one number at home. My idea is to derisk from issues like SIM fraud/deactivation which makes one number a single point of failure.
- I have also split my emails as a result - IÂ maintain two email IDs thereby avoiding a single point of failure.
- Ideally, I want to keep one of those email IDs at home i.e., not signed in from my smartphone but haven't been able to do that yet.Â

Is this applicable only to mobile number UPI, or you mean to say none of the banks and psp/ppi UPI handle allow 10 digit number other than your own mobile number as upi handle ?
