Why Street Smarts Are More Valuable Than Book Smarts By Julia Dearing |

On average we spend 16+ years in school and for 16+ years we are taught that our test scores not only define our chance at getting into a good college, our success after we graduate, and the number of 0’s that will come at the end of a future paycheck, they also determine our level of intelligence.

We’re taught to believe that those numbers and the GPAs that follow essentially determine our chances of success vs. failure. That’s complete bullshit.

Sure, being book smart is great and I would love to not be retaking a required math class I previously failed. Of course, a high GPA is a fantastic safety blanket in the post-college job search. But, do you know what else is a great key to success? Street smarts. In fact, I’d like to argue that without street smarts, the entire concept of book smarts is really nothing.

Being street smart means you have the ability to interact, function, and thrive in the world around you. It’s the ambition, tact, and personality that set’s one person apart from another. It’s the guts and the knowledge to get what you want anyway you can.

Being someone who’s always floated in the average range when it comes to GPA and grades, a few C’s here, maybe an unfortunate F with just the right amount of A’s and B’s to balance it out, I’ve always been told that for me, finding success may be a little harder.

Constantly reminded that if I don’t work harder and a get the grades associated with an “intelligent” person, I may limit my ability to reach my full potential.

But what those people are overlooking are the skills that are actually going to help me in my future career path. While they’re looking at the D I just got on my calc test and the C in French class, my future employers are looking at my work on the multiple websites I write for, they’re looking at the extremely professional personal website I put together and built myself, they’re looking at the resume that says I got a fashion internship in New York City after only my freshman year in college.

Guess what the real kicker is, none of those things were accomplished because I was kickass at linear equations or because I understand every word in philosophical dialogue written 500 years ago. I accomplished those things by understanding how the world works and what I needed to be doing in order to get my foot in the door to set myself up for future success.

I was able to accomplish these things by understanding that it is perfectly ok to ask questions and by understanding how to interact with people whether it be in an interview, while making connections, or just a person on the street.

I understand that good grades are important and that you can’t blow off your least favorite class just because it has literally nothing to do with your future profession. You have to do things you don’t want to get what you do want. Some things won’t come easy and it will be frustrating when you study for hours and still don’t quite get a concept for your test.

But while I want you to promise me you’ll work hard at everything you do, I want you to also promise me that you won’t ever beat yourself down just because you aren’t “smart” according to the numbers. Because if you can understand what you want in life, run after it, grab it and hold on tight, you are the smartest person in the world. Book smart looks great on paper, but it doesn’t always translate perfectly into the real world. What does translate is your drive, ambition, and courage and that is something numbers cannot define.

A street smart person is a great leader, a great leader is a great boss, and a great boss is a damn good CEO. If you know how to interact in function in a pretty big and cut-throat world, there is nothing that isn’t an option.

Book smart teaches you how to calculate, street smart teaches you how to thrive.

Many of us are reluctant to learn from the people closest to us—our authorities, colleagues, staff and friends. Rather than being open to learning, we close ourselves off out of embarrassment, fear, stubbornness, or pride. It’s almost as if we say to ourselves, “I have already learned all that I can [or want to learn] from this person; there is nothing else I can [or need to] learn.”
It’s sad, because often the people closest to us know us the best. They are sometimes able to see ways in which we are acting in a self-defeating manner and can offer very simple solutions. If we are too proud or stubborn to learn, we lose out on some wonderful, simple ways to improve our lives.

Remain open to the suggestions of . Ask senior devotees and authorities, “What are some of my blind spots?” By this simple process you end up getting some good advice. It’s such a simple shortcut for growth, yet almost no one uses it. All it takes is a little courage and humility, and the ability to let go of your ego. This is especially true if you are in the habit of ignoring suggestions, taking them as criticism.

Pick something that you feel the person whom you are asking is qualified to answer. Sometimes the advice we get usually prevents us from having to learn something the hard way

The UW team used ambient signals from this Wi-Fi router to power sensors in a low-resolution camera and other devices. Dennis Wise/University of Washington

Engineers from the University of Washington have discovered how to use the untapped energy transmitted by Wi-Fi routers to power devices. The technology is called Power over Wi-Fi (PoWiFi) and the final paper will be presented next month at the CoNEXT 2015 meeting in Germany.

PoWiFi’s prototype combines a Wi-Fi transmission strategy that delivers power on multiple channels, and antennae that can be attached to devices and harvest energy from the multiple channels simultaneously and turn it into DC current.

The radio waves emitted by Wi-Fi routers transmit about 1 watt of power – the maximum allowed by the FCC – which is used to carry data to devices. In comparison, a typical smartphone charge requires 5 watts of power. Routers send signals intermittently when data is requested by a device, so the team developed an optimized version that sends out power packets continuously over the channels not used by the data.

“For the first time we’ve shown that you can use Wi-Fi devices to power the sensors in cameras and other devices,” said lead author Vamsi Talla, in a statement. “We also made a system that can co-exist as a Wi-Fi router and a power source — it doesn’t degrade the quality of your Wi-Fi signals while it’s powering devices.”

Earlier in the year, we reported that this technology was able to power a small grey-scale camera positioned 5 meters (17 feet) from the router. In the past months, the team has conducted more proof-of-concept experiments and show that PoWiFi is able to recharge the battery of a Jawbone Up24, a wearable activity tracker, from 0 to 41 percent in 2.5 hours. The technology doesn’t compare yet to traditional charging methods, which can fully charge this device in 80 minutes.

The researchers tested this technology in six different homes to investigate the possible deterioration of Internet speed. None of the users noticed any changes in how quickly a video would stream or a web page would load.

Although these experiments are really promising, the devices used only needed small amounts of power. Before Wi-Fi charging becomes readily available, there are significant improvements needed to guarantee stability and reliability from the router, as well as being able to integrate the charging antenna directly into devices. Furthermore, as you can see from the image, at the moment the antennae are fairly sizeable.

The team is hopeful that all these obstacles can be overcome. “In the future, PoWi-Fi could leverage technology power scaling to further improve the efficiency of the system to enable operation at larger distances and power numerous more sensors and applications,” said co-author Shyam Gollakota, assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington.

The Young Boy with an Egg Basket

A young boy in Mumbai was cycling with a basket of eggs on the bike.

While cycling a little too fast, he accidentally hit a big rock and fell down along with the bicycle.

The egg basket he was carrying fell on the side walk also fell down and all the eggs broke. A crowd gathered around the boy.

As usual free advice started flowing from the on lookers “Couldn’t you be more careful?”

“What is this, you are cycling, casually without attention?”

“Young man, you shouldn’t be riding the bike so fast when you have a basket full of eggs in it.”

About that time, an older man approached came there and saw what had happened and said to the crowd:

“Poor fellow! I am sure this boy has to answer the Owner of the shop. I think we should all help him. I will help him, as much as I can.” Saying that handed over Rs 20/- to the boy and also told him, “These onlookers are good people, I am sure they will not only give advice, they will also help you by giving some money!”.

The onlookers at once started digging in their pockets and started giving the young man money to the boy.

The boy stopped crying and was very happy and started thanking everyone for their generosity. The money collected was much more than the value of the broken eggs!

One of the onlooker asked the boy, “Young man, if that old man had not happened to come around, I do not know what difficulties you would have faced with your owner”

The boy smiled and replied “Sir, that old man is a smart Gujarati and is the owner of the shop where I work and he is GUJARATI.”

Be on your best behaviour, your computer knows when you’re angry

ANI, Washington DC|

People experiencing anger become less precise in their mouse movements and move the cursor at different speeds.

The way you move your mouse can tell a lot of about your mood, according to a new study.

Most people can tell if you’re angry based on the way you’re acting. Professor Jeffrey Jenkins can tell if you’re angry by the way you move a computer mouse.

The BYU information systems expert says people experiencing anger (and other negative emotions – frustration, confusion and sadness) become less precise in their mouse movements and move the cursor at different speeds.

Thanks to advances in modern technology, Jenkins and his colleagues can now gather and process enough data points from your cursor movement to measure those deviations and indicate your emotional state.

Using this technology, websites will no longer be dumb, Jenkins said, adding that websites can go beyond just presenting information, but they can sense you. ?They can understand not just what you’re providing, but what you’re feeling.”

Now the folks running the online ticket website that drives you bonkers will know exactly when you throw up your hands and scream.

According to his research, when users are upset or confused, the mouse no longer follows a straight or gently curving path. Instead, movements become jagged and sudden. Additionally, someone exhibiting negative emotions moves a mouse slower.

Jenkins believes the greatest application of his research (and resulting technology that measures mouse movements) is that web developers will be able to adapt or fix sore points in websites that bring out negative emotions.

Read: Don’t end texts with periods. They make you look insincere.

In other words, now the folks running the online ticket website that drives you bonkers will know exactly when you throw up your hands and scream.

Jenkins said the cursor-tracking concept can also be applied to mobile devices, where swipes and taps replace mouse movement. Although he is still in the early stages of looking at mobile devices, he is encouraged by the massive amounts of data phones and tablets are providing.

The study appears in journal MIS Quarterly.
