Amazon knows but courier guys doesn’t know. They just get return slip and pick up address. That’s it.
You cannot blame courier guys for this issue.
You do chat or e-mail them asap and try to escalate it. If still delays they may say that return period is over.

Amazon app click on left menu > Customer service > Contact us > Email Customer service

This is their highest level of customer service
Better mail them and explain in detail to pick up it at the earliest.

Amazon will pick it up. They are slow with heavy appliances. Same thing happened with me (bought a kitchen chimney).

you must be getting a return Docket number / Waybill id .. that may be from Bluedart / Aramex … Call the same provider and ask them that you have a scheduled pick-up from amazon with So and so docket id , and that item is a machine , so come with a van , they will come with a mini van for pick-up…

Water consumption of machine too too much… Clothes are not washing properly.. after wash it was like not washed only…
Which courier they shipped? Pick up is with which courier?

ATS sometimes get F’ed up
There were times, return items were picked up 2 weeks from scheduled day
Sometimes I even got refund prior to pickup [replacement order]
Ignore chat support, contact their support via call/email n don’t stress them too much
Don’t force you will get free machine and refund in they don’t pickup just sit relaxed and watch
Ohky…. lets wait then i already mailed yesterday they called me before sometime and said it will pickup by today evening.. lets wait n watch..
still no response from amazon .. what i do now ?
Did you mail to resolution-in mail id?
If yes, escalate to Jeff right away with all details and previous emails (including screenshots if any) as proof.

Why now self return?
Previously they were generating return pick up by courier for you?? Right?? Then why this now?
When they don’t have answer they give this type of BS.
This is nothing. At least Amazon is accepting return for a used machine. On top of that, they will pay huge money for self-return charges.
All this because OP feels it doesn’t wash clothes properly; can you believe that?
Never before in history of India could you do that earlier, could you?

Instead of calling Amazon it’s better you email and escate the matter, tell them the whole story what ever you have mentioned in your post. They will surely help and atleast you will have documentary evidence that you escalated this matter.
