In a judgement passed on Tuesday on a special leave petition filed by the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India against the Union of India, the apex court said when hotels and restaurants sell food and drinks, they also render a service, making it a composite transaction with composite billing and MRP rates cannot be insisted upon for such entities.

there should be no extra charges on water bottle.govt as already ordered to sell water bottles on mrp..u can file case

goto consumer court with bill, otherwise dont visit that hotel again or post that in your facebook wall, so sometime that become viral and hotels may stop this thing.

this is india, day light robbery is possible in any form

This is true for shops at malls/airports etc,not for hotels/restaurants.Read the Supreme Court verdict in the given link above.When you sit inside a hotel/restaurant drinking mineral water then you are not just paying for the bottle but also for the waiter that brings it,the chair that you sit on,the ac/lighting etc.In short that water bottle is not just sold to you but served to you.They can replace that mineral water bottle with their own RO water & you still have to pay the same money & this is perfectly legal.

Okay.. water is not about luxury …….restaurants have opposed after that things have been exempted.

Water is indeed not about luxury so restaurants/hotels can simply install a RO/water fountain in their premises from which anybody can fill their water bottle/glass but the question is,do you expect to do this after paying a bill in hundreds for food & would you even go to such a hotel/restaurant where you are expected to go & fill your own water glass after eating food.

i guess, there must be a service included.
Example: waiter must have given bottle with glass.
May be considering service, they must be charging more

All Hotels and restaurants have to install R. O, He could have simply asked for filtered water which they have to provide. Its mandatory for hotels and restaurant to provide filtered water but they use to provide water bottles for extra money.

That is different thing.Even if somebody ask for filtered water instead of mineral water it will still cost more than usual(even if less than mineral water). Basically,as long as you ask for water & it is being served to you then hotels/restaurants are withing their legal rights to charge you more than usual. Of course this does not apply if a hotel/restaurant install a RO at their door which customer need to go to drink water.

this is still a better deal

tea is minimum 60rs for 1 cup in 2 star + hotels

Dude get your fact right, they cannot charge you for water, yes but they can charge you for packed water. Serving filtered water is mandatory in every hotel and restaurants. GO AND know customers right first before comment. you can use hotels and restaurant toilet even if you are not staying there or having food. Providing water and bathroom are basic amenities which they have to provide.

Ok.I was just under the impression that water served by a waiter when asked is different(aka served category along with meals) from water(usually in a container) the waiter/restaurant/hotel put on your table before the meal arrives(free as expected).

They usually have bottles with higher MRP (marked up price).

It used to be the case a few years back(seen shops just outside Delhi airport selling Rs.20 1l bottle mrp printed as Rs.40) but now I think they simply use more expensive brands(e.g.tata himalayan or qua).
