My Dell laptop charger is not connecting in the port in laptop. It used to be a problem, I had to twist and turn wire and keep it like that to charge, but even that is not working now. Any help on how to do it myself? The Dell guys are saying 3500 for repair.

Bro, you take Dell service center’s help. Otherwise at least seek help of a local mechanic. Without schematics, how can we help you?

It’s a hardware problem brother, might be faulty charger or faulty power port. Take it to a good local repair shop and get it repaired in front of you or they might take away other parts. Repair cost may vary depending on problem. If the laptop is costly one don’t hesitate to get it repaired by DELL. No other way.

Take it to repair centre before problem worsen & you end up paying even more. Also take out your hard disk(or at least delete all personal pics/pdf/docs/browsers history/saved password, for me too much hassle so I simply take image backup of C drive(takes ~30-40min for a 50gb C drive on external portable hdd) & then reinstall fresh windows which takes ~5-10min & after coming back from repairing centre restore the backup image(same ~30-40min to restore) to get it exactly in same condition as the time of taking image backup.

I had to twist and turn wire and keep it like that to charge

It indicate problem with continuity of wires. Just cut it and do self repair. Cost zero. Search on youtube/instructables if you are still clueless.

A bad advice, have you ever tried self repairing a dell charger cable with proprietary middle pin that reports original dell adapter to a dell laptop.

No charger works fine, i tried on friends laptop. Problem seems to be with the plugin point in the laptop. I guess will have to take to mechanic only

Don’t change the pin only wires if they are broken. My old dell had similar problem , I cut away the problem part (neck) and it works great now

My friend did the same & ended up spending 2500 on mobo repair for the damaged charging circuit & that was years back, now it would cost at least 3-4k.

You can get the pin on aliexpress, good thing is you don’t have to do any solder

Bhai mere friend ne bhi yahi kiyaa thaa aur problem worse ho gayee. Dell laptop charger cable is not like your usual cable aur local electric shop waale aisee small electronic items repair kar bhi nahi sakte with their standard equipment like normal soldering kit.

Only if willing to spend & wait for at least 5-6 weeks.Govt has recently tightened the rules for importing goods from sites like aliexpress.

Maybe a novice..it is hard to break charging circuit as they have inbuilt circuit breaker . . Just keep a cheap Rs. 150/- DMM handy and check voltages before plugging.

Bro dell adapter comes with an identification chip inside it which is connected to the inside thin pin inside the charging pin & a similar identification chip is present in dell laptop charging circuit. When any charger is connected to a dell laptop then the chip in this charging circuit validates the signal from the thin inside pin connected to the similar chip in charger & only after this verification, the charging circuit/dell laptop recognizes charger as genuine dell. If for any reason this validation fails then charging circuit will not allow the charger to supply/charge the battery at normal rates but very reduced rates resulting in charging time extending to 7-8 or even more hours & cpu throttling(so reduced performance) because of forced power saving plan.

Now it is easy to damage this identification chip/circuit by even a slight mistake.say you are soldering but applied a bit too much/too less resulting in not the exact condition as original then even a small millivolt difference will result in failure of this identification signal & may even damage the identification chip(which is what happened with my friend, laptop repair guy had to put a new charging circuit taken from another scrap dell laptop mobo as these identification chips are proprietary & cannot be repaired/replaced except from another similar dell laptop).

Is this dell charger? Have you checked with some hardware monitoring software like cpuz to confirm cpu is not throttling by running some intensive task(like some benchmark tool or simply convert some hd video)?

btw how do you attach images directly to forum posts here instead of using imgur links in tags.

this is original Dell charger that came with laptop. connect all three wire inside, there won’t be any problem

I hv been using in this state for past 6 month, haven’t encountered any issue

Ps there’s no solder involved, you can get some crimp connector if u want it to look good n for safety

I think the reason is that in your case wire was damaged some distance away from the charging pin cable joint while in my friend’s case it was damaged just at the joint where charging pin meets with the charger cable.

Btw what about attaching images directly to the post,I never see any upload image option when replying to a post so always have to use imgur links.

no, my pin was crushed , so I bought a old dead charger with same dia from local bazar. Replaced the pin of original charger.

for adding pics, use < img src=“http:/imageurl”/>

Was the old dead charger a genuine dell?

I know about img tags but when I put imgur link withing img tag to post a pic then on clicking it to view,it opens with imgur link(i.imgur.c…) while your attached pic when clicked to open, opens with an address like cdn0.desidime.c../attachments/photos/… This means my pic is on imgur server while your pic is on desidime server which happens when you directly upload pic to desidime forum by attaching it directly to post(like clicking on some browse button as it happens in many other forums).

Universal chargers are very common and they work for all brands incl. dell. I don’t think Dell will spend so much for identification etc when even apple doesn’t care. It does not make business sense. FOrgetting charger is common among travellers who buy most laptops and making it hard to use replacement charger is bad business sense.

Also it makes perfect business sense.Ironic that you give example of Apple which is known to use proprietary tech in almost anything.Btw did you know that apple laptops uses a proprietary nvme ssd connector so you can’t just buy a typical nvme ssd & use that to replace it just like in any other laptop. smile

one doesn’t forget ssd connectors but forgetting chargers is most common thing.
Btw according to hackaday link dell does not reject other chargers , its just that they lack extra features which are not needed anyway. These days onboard battery charging circuits are intelligent enough and need no monitoring or intervention from user.

Well my friend did try with non-genuine dell charger(as identified by system) & his laptop did work fine except his max processor speed under load was cut to almost half.I don’t know about others but using a laptop at half its max processor speed when I paid full price even if I don’t use that max speed most of the time seems pretty needed to me. sunglasses

Another person I know got a non-functioning apple laptop but unable to get the data from its nvme ssd unless he buys a 7-8k apple specific nvme usb enclosure or pay similar amt at apple service centre so there is that too.
