Medical Insurance: After how many days of buying it I can avail for a surgery?
Dimers,
I need your help regarding this, My mother has disc related issue near the low back. And the doctors say it would be around 1.2 Lakh for surgery.
I currently don’t have medical insurance for Self or Parents. I was preparing to buy one in the previous week but I have a doubt, Since its not a disease after getting the medical insurance for parents after how many days I can avail the benefits?
I would be thankful for the replies, Tagging some important people @DealSeeker

@zengeek Since it is pre existing ailment none of the medical insurance will cover it immediately. I think the cooling period is 30 days normally. And it requires 4 consecutive renewals of insurance to cover pre existing ailments. Hope it helps you. Cheers
I guess they won’t cover it even if you buy it now. One of my friends who got an Insurance for his Hernia operation was denied stating that he withheld information on this condition as these issues won’t happen in 15-20 days. They might have some clause so that they don’t have to pay for preexisting illness.
i guess nothing is covered for first 30 days. not sure, but i guess only accident cases are covered from next day; for rest after 30 days. also, there are few diseases like piles, cataract, etc which are not covered in first two years.
@zengeek Also find out if they cover payments for surgeries like back disc problem. Medical insurance different schemes provide different type of plans and coverage for certain surgeries & diseases. Confirm with 2-3 persons as some will simply yes to get insurance from you.
@zengeek Apologies for the late response. I was traveling and mostly offline.
I spoke to my insurance agents (for Max Life as well as Star Health) to inquire about the insurance coverage for a pre-existing lower back disc condition and its surgery. They have confirmed that the blocking period for such a condition is two years. This basically means that even if you purchase an insurance cover for your mother now, any medical expenses related to the condition won’t be covered under the policy for the next two years. So buying an insurance policy now to get the surgery covered under it is not an option.
Moreover, if your mother is a senior citizen and she was not continuously covered under an insurance policy, the payout for such conditions is restricted to only 70% of the surgery and related medical costs. This percentage coverage might vary depending on the policy, but you can be sure that it will not be 100%.
I feel bad that I do not have any favorable information for you. But please do let us know if you have discovered any policy or alternative ways to reduce the costs for the surgery. I am sure it will be helpful to others in a similar situation.
@DealSeeker No I have not found any alternative to save on the costs. Doctor suggested to get physiotherapy done first for a week and based on that we can decide for a surgery. We didn’t had a personal medical insurance since my company was providing one but now that I have switched job and the current company doesn’t even have the PF system established yet. So yeah, Will take the burn this time but sure learnt a lesson. And the fact that problems come all at once sometime is proven again
