Kabali – The Review
Thanks to bay area cine industry friends, I got to watch a preview show of Kabali. I went in with no expectations and came out with mixed feelings. Kabali is paisa vasool for Rajinikanth fans while others can have equal fun mocking the aged superstar go through his paces.
The bar has been set high for Rajini, since he has already donated all his assets, built colleges, constructed dams, overthrew a Chief Minister and in general has given up his life for the masses. So, in this movie, the setting moves to Malaysia, where tamils are ill-treated and need a Messiah to save them. Enter the Superstar, who, like Nelson Mandela, spends several years in prison for his opposition to racism. When he comes out, he settles down to a regular life (think Baasha’s auto driver), until circumstances force him to become a gangster and rescue his daughter from the enemies. And of course, he becomes the leader of Tamils/Dalits in Malaysia and improves their conditions tremendously.
For a Rajini fan, this will all give him/her goosebumps. Slow motion walks, stylish poses, crisp dialogues are all there, and theatres will explode with applause each time Rajini does his carefully choreographed routine. There are flashback scenes where he looks “youth” that is sure to make his fans feel nostalgic. Director Ranjith has ensured that the larger than life image of Rajini has been preserved. In essence, it feels like a lifetime highlights of various Rajini movie scenes re-enacted.
For a casual cinema goer though, the whole shindig will feel thoroughly artificial and unbearable. The aged star with heavy makeup trying to act as a 30 year old is cringe-worthy. For someone who in real life has shied away from any responsibility, has acted without any consistency in politics, a person who has never stood up to his beliefs (he appreciated Jayalalitha getting out of prison for the case that he railed against her in ’96!), Rajinikanth again doing the act of the mass leader and people’s savior is laughable. The real life Rajini can do no right except to kindle talks about his entry into politics. But movie after movie, he does his act, and it is getting a bit long on the tooth.
Ranjith could have made a better film on the plight of the Malaysian tamils. May be that was his original plan. The movie though, ends up as yet another commercial vehicle for the Superstar. Ranjith’s Dalit politics take a backseat here. Radhika Apte is apt in her role as is Dhansika. Watch out for a surprise cameo from someone you wouldn’t expect in a Rajini film. Neruppudaa is a surprising ear worm from Santosh Narayanan.

My arguments are far from justifying. I’m condemning the very root of these activities, both the sides of the coin.
Most important, if you really want to change this, you must change that too. They go hand in hand.
The coin itself is our creation , which we have bought into the context to justify our wrong deeds .. to do correct things in our life we don’t need to be rich or poor .

Forward from Telangana
Your argument is all over the place…hopping on from ‘denouncing downloaders’ to ‘making the uploaders look philanthropic by saying they dont make much money through piracy’ to saying that ‘KAT itself doesn’t make any money and thus making it look selfless’ to ‘saying DD has “lulz” value’
4. Value is not only determined by revenue generated but, moreso in the recent times, by user traffic and user base. If your logic had prevailed Whatsapp would’ve happily sold itself to facebook for free…and many other startups incl. Flipkart would’ve been in the same situation.
3. KAT does make a decent amount of money through advertising and its highly unreliable to assume everyone uses Adblock basing it off of our tech savvy friends. If not, then people wouldn’t have spent time building and maintaining a torrent website, ditching their lives and careers in the process. And that’s the whole point in the US Justice Dept making a case against KAT, showing it in a bad light…that it makes money off of creative people and that it amounts to thievery.
2. Uploaders do get generous donations, though not frequently…and whenever they ask for donations…its mostly because they don’t have enough money to invest in a webseed, or upgrade their internet for more uploads. Its impossible to make a profit off of uploading pirate content….and the donations they get is to ensure sustenance or better services. Most uploaders have a regular 9-5 job and they indulge in the encoding business as a hobby. They shell out money from their pockets to maintain seeds….many even buy their own Blu-ray discs to encode from a pure source and some treat encoding as a passion…spending hours and days researching about the optimal settings for compression while retaining quality.
1. Finally, addressing the point of piracy….its not completely black and white as you say it is. Firstly, file-sharing websites are not inherently evil. Infact KAT is among the best… with an easy-to-use UI and a vibrant community with active participation from its users… to discuss and promote knowledge about almost everything. This is especially important when the files in question are free and legal to distribute like Linux distros, free content from independent creators etc., And there is a provision for retracting copyright stuff through DMCA….which KAT follows(atleast on paper)…although I doubt its implementation efficacy. Its the uploaders and downloaders who are in the wrong when using such a site and not the person who maintains it. I don’t think the case will stand against him anyways cuz I doubt DMCA’s enforcement in a foreign country and it’ll probably end up in an out-of-court settlement.
Piracy of copyrighted content in itself is not an absolute evil, atleast in some cases. Piracy negatively affects the creators who already have enough fame and money, the most. Piracy helps people with creative potential but not enough fame/money to market it as it helps spread their work across demographics. Piracy helps stir up interest in the creative arts. More people are likely to pay and see an ‘artsy’ film by a director the next time bcoz they have pirated and seen it before and appreciated the directors efforts in establishing movie-making as an art form. More people are likely to pay and attend concerts of relatively unknown music bands bcoz they’ve previewed and liked their music by downloading it for free. This is probably the reason we see only big production houses and rich artists/producers making a hue and cry about piracy. Some directors and creators have even come forward in support of piracy in the past.
“I’m not sure piracy hurts. I think it really raises the profile of the show and raises the profile of HBO in general.” One of the HBO directors for Game of Thrones, a guy called David Petrarca, actually said, ‘No, it’s great. It really helps the show’s cultural buzz, and it does not impact the bottom line because HBO has more than enough money to keep making the show.’
He retracted his statements later, probably at the producers’ behest.
Piracy is not going to die anytime soon….and it is indeed wrong to download and share copyrighted stuff. But, how to combat it, should be decided after thorough research and a desire to make objective-oriented laws unhindered by lobbying of big corporations…lest we turn this thing into a debacle like “The War on drugs” and “The War on terrorism”
P.S. This is just a macro-analysis and is in no way or form, a justification for an individual to pirate stuff inspite of being able to afford it.

It is down All the links that are coming up are cached copies of KAT (some probably are infested with malware). To test if it is an alt domain, try using the search bar(fails on cached copies).
Kat is always available on here lsuzvpko6w6hzpnn.onion, Better to use that.

Nope…the onion site is down too…The servers are down…noone knows whether its voluntary or they’ve been seized too.
“According to Kickass Torrents’ status website, before it was taken down, the site still had proxy sites including kickassto.co, kickass.ag, kickass.cs, katproxy.is, thekat.se, katproxy.cc, lovekat.org, and an onion site. But now, none of those sites are working either.”
