Can anyone help -
Does it really make much difference in electricity consumption/bills?
I tried getting an idea through various URLs at google. Seems mix replies.
Suppose if my monthly bill on AC is 5K, using 5 start AC. How much can we expect I use 2 start or 3 star AC???/

Only good thing about Llyod is their brand ambassador Shruti Hassan, good things end there . Llyod sells well in North due to VFM pricing and marketing . Coming to Carrier, they make good Ac’s . May not be as good as Daikin or O general but Carrier does churn out some fine products .

Agreed for O’General.
But, I have always seen that compressor remains on maximum time (means electricity bill:-P

Here are a few tips i have for you.
1) First and the most important factor while selecting air conditioner is " Tonnage". Most of the online Tonnage calculators are not accurate when it comes to Indian conditions since those calculators are meant for western homes which doesn’t see as high temperatures as we do in India and moreover, homes abroad tends too be much better planned and insulated.
Use the below excel sheet to calculate tonnage requirement for your room :
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/attachments/gadge...
2) Buy the most efficient AC you can afford . Trust me, you will recover your money within the next 2-3 years. If you can afford, by all means go for inverter AC. Recommend brands are Sharp & Daikin. Inverter AC tends to be 30-40% more efficient than a 5 star air conditioner. I have a sharp 1.1 Ton unit installed on my 150 Sq feet bedroom. Sharp unit is on for 12 hours a day and it consumes roughly 5.5 units of electricity. Another bedroom has an 8 year old 1 star LG 1 ton unit which consumes around 12 unit for 12 hours.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_conditioner_i...
3) Ensure that you insulate your home properly. There should not be any unnecessary gap anywhere especially under windows and doors. Placement of air conditioner is equally important as well. Go through articles online to read more about placement of indoor AC unit.
4) Get the best technician money can buy. No matter how expensive, technologically sound product you buy, if you end up getting a bad technician , he will screw your installation which will have a direct effect on AC’s efficiency. if you are buying Daikin, insist the dealer to send Daikin’s in house technicians. Those guys know what they are doing. Sharp technicians are noobs. You will be better off hiring one by yourself. Don’t depend on dealer to assign a tech. Do your research and get the best tech. A good technician will charge anywhere between 1.5- 3.0k for installation.
Good luck.
The best decision i made 3 years back was opting for an inverter air conditioner. I have bought a few of them over the years and they have worked great. Electricity bills have seen 50-70% drop after upgrading to inverter AC’s.

Found this in the DD blog section (I think there are more as well)

Total around 60k for 1 ton. I must this was a wastage of money as we hardly use the AC. Mom doesn’t like using AC and thinks too much about the electricity bill. We use a table fan even with a AC acting as a showpiece.

+1 and how far back?

@nrkmca the link with full specs of the Panasonic I gave you earlier is an 18000BTU Hot and Cold model.
@wbdimer sorry can not scout much on mobile (no links to give). But can tell that machine efficiencies have evolved beyond copper versus aluminium.
Having said that, one has to look at individual requirements, availability and affordability to decide name/model.
.
I also would rather avoid a fair product if it doesn’t have good local support by the brand.
Having said that, on the VFM Indian end of the spectrum Bluestar does make units with copper tubing. Panasonic, Sharp too.
Even if the model you take has an aluminium to copper (piping) joint or coupling it is okay so long as the coupling device or the welding is done correctly .
[properties of aluminium differ enough from copper to make welding a difficult process]
.
.
@still_guessing like i was telling you in the PM, the very words ‘Llyod is in vogue’ itself sound like the gaudy Fogg campaign… market mei Fogg aur @asli beep Troll chal raha hai.
.
.
But like I’d also said, I don’t know much about fakish names like Llyod, Haier, Koryo, Vu, Electrolux (after the Dhoots made a mess of it].
The good yet (value wise) budget names like Sharp, Carrier hold high regard in my eyes. The learning that comes off doing the same thing over and over since ages and investing in refinement via strong R&D is the ‘good’ about them.
The ‘lacunae’ with a Carrier or a Sharp (in this segment) is that they aren’t really retail oriented. They did not need to be.
But now many business do have increased focus (and visibility, advertising) over India.
.
.
I’ve said it earlier and I say it again: people should at-least see the short introduction video of Panasonic Cube. (by Panasonic)
and
the 1 or 2 user review run-through videos.
i am NOT associated with any brand. Just that Panasonic Cube really marries window to split concept well and was primarily targetted and made for South Asian markets only.
price:performance ratio is great, functionality, innovation is great. (can be kept on the floor.)

It was in April 2014 I think. Since then it has been a mere showpiece most of the time. Haven’t even got it serviced once as it isn’t used at all. Wastage if money when we could have got a 20k Ac instead.
@Vinay Sunn kar bura lag raha hai.
Ab hindsight mei gyaan dena ka koi matlub hoga.
.
But principly, my family grooming has hardwired this thought deep in me.
That be it a 2rs needle on shopclues or be it an aeroplane (symbolic of high cost item)
take a well evaluated decision based on ‘requirement analysis’ and utility over a period of time.
It doesn’t mean that we do not end up with stuff eventually lying about in the attic or basement. but we make a good effort not to.
People here everywhere often get carried away by impulsive shopping or replace chocolates/sex with binge shopping for mood upliftment.
But there is a difference between an expense, and an investment/ capital expenditure. The latter ought have more thought given to it.
Well… I prefer treating expenses too similarly. I mean, people here even go ahead and buy ‘loots’ like contraceptives or even the pig-s#¡t sold in 100% cash-back sales of sleazeball sellers/sites at times without having any utility, present or future need.
may be they then find a way to gift or sell those things, can’t say.
Doesn’t work for me though.
CC: @viveka (for reference only. the past similar views @Magus )
@nrkmca we too couldn’t buy the Panasonic Inverter + HnC model as nobody was supplying it (or interested to procure it even after assuring us: order kiya hai. They simply returned the token).
Even normal Hot and Cold of Panasonic we had difficulty to find a vendor.
Eventually I convinced them and myself that, (mann maar kar) let us settle for a humble room heater with thermostat and a separate humidifier.
(if the weather is dry or in arid places, the lack of moisture in the air can be a killer for people with chest ailments or asthma type conditions.)
Though I almost ordered the Black & Decker Humidifier i liked, i have kept it pending. Otherwise my folks would simply not agree to me ordering a HEPA filter later. Better to do it all together.
From utility angle, the combined costs of a normal (or Inverter) Split AC plus à-la-carte heater, humidifier, HEPA filter combo isn’t too exorbitant, in my view.

TO cut short, which one should i buy now? Voltas or Lg as only these two are available here right now.
whichever one comes top in your (family plus local technician’s advice) analysis of giving better repairs and service support at your specific location.
Calling @cybertechie if can suggest some PoA (plan of action).
Voltas do make good AC’s but LG support was better to us.

Researched a lot on Inverter Ac’s. Its good though but not a must considering price as well.
That’s why I’ve decided to buy 1.5 ton 5 stars Hot N Cold Ac. Bit confused in brand specifically for this variant of ACs. Hence created the thread.
buy from second hand market. saves lot of money. olx quikr

If you are using an under powered unit, Compressor will remain on most of the time. For example, if you end up using a .75 T AC for a 180 Sq room, AC will take a long time to cool the room and on top of it compressor will be always be busy. That is why i stressed the importance of getting the tonnage part right.

I think, its better to buy separate heater for winters.
