The Resume Is Dying, and This Is What’s Next

I’ve definitely noticed a lot more grumbling about resumes in the past few years as our online identities have gotten more sophisticated (and interesting!) but the conventions of a job search haven’t kept pace. Some companies are taking action. Here are some interesting experiments or popular alternatives I’ve seen come out of Lever’s customer base:
Keepsafe, a mobile privacy company, declares that it forgoes resumes completely in their application process, asking instead for you to describe something you’ve recently built. They first got the idea after reading Aline Lerner’s shocking post on the low efficacy of resumes.
Speaking of Aline Lerner, she’s recently formed a company to offer an alternative to resumes, Interviewing.io, which offers a fully anonymized technical interview platform as a way to initially screen candidates on their chops alone.
And obviously, platforms like AngelList and LinkedIn offer the ability to apply with your profile, which increasingly includes content you wouldn’t normally find on a resume, like Projects, Posts, and social references. Other, more niche professional communities let you highlight all sorts of industry-specific experience. Behance allows designers to feature their work in rich multimedia as opposed to bullet points. A Coderwall profile lets a developer link their GitHub to feature repos and demonstrate how they’ve unlocked achievements. More and more of these kinds of online professional networks pop up all the time and the best recruiters I know are quite savvy about representing their own companies’ employees on the sites.

As if you can! Hah! But I have these funny episodes that crack me up every single time I think about them.. I am not kidding. Some of the stunts I know are hilarious! And they seem to have worked on manager! Here are the samplers from my oven..
Airplane Mode Act
I first noticed this when I would call my colleague later at night. The cell would be unreachable. And I wondered who keeps their cell switched off early evening. Till I realized her sob story! Apparently every time she would send out a note to her manager asking for approval or any update, she would be immediately be called back.The unscheduled call would last on an average more than 45 minutes. After 3 or 4 calls she figured she couldn’t take the stress anymore, so she now switched off her cell every time she sent her manager any approval mails. How will it help you I asked. Because he won’t approve till you speak with him? I still don’t have an answer to that but in case one of you reading this happens to be her boss, you now know why she is in the boondocks every time you call her:-). Show some airtime mercy will you!
Re-programmable Chest pain Act
Another colleague of mine had it all timed to a pantomime act. Put him in a spot or a difficult corner, the coronary symptoms start building up. A slow pain spreads across his face as he slowly starts rubbing his chest. Increase the heat on the discussion, gag reflexes with practiced ease are exhibited! Of course as they say- you can fool some people all the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time! So the symptoms differ. From chest palpitations, blurred vision, muscular spasms etc. I must admit you have to stay on top of your hypochondriacal game if you are to come up with new symptoms on a regular basis.
Damn my cellphone carrier Act
This is probably most common, further compounded by a national brand admitting to gaps in carrier coverage. So if manager is fuming, simply blame it on the fact that you can’t hear them …Oops call drop..Ooops driving no coverage, oops echo…whatever you want to come up with. Its a field play..no i mean a triple or a quadruple play if you look up networking definitions!
And by that time sanity has gripped me and I am angry no more:-)!
I could go on and on, but I don’t want to bust more secrets.
Also, I suspect now my team has found out I am not as senile as I seem to be. Some where the sixth sense kicks in and just a flicker of an eye or the extra words coming out of the mouth are enough to set my alarm bells ringing:-)…So now you know!
I could have been Sherlock Holmes in drag but Watson caught my Act!
PS: Anyone who takes this blog seriously- my advice.. Don’t!
With apologies to my colleagues who mentioned their bag of tricks in complete faith. What the heck…it has been quite many years since then..so they probably have graduated to a new bag of tricks..That I don’t know yet!
Maybe I should try calling them now…You know… just to check the cellphone has been switched off or if there are random one man pantomime acts being practiced across the workroom aisles!
