Hi all,

I’m currently in Chennai. I need to buy a good 6 seater Dining set preferably granite top and a leatherette sofa for the purpose of gifting. From what i read online, there seems to be a dedicated furniture market in royapettah. I don’t speak Tamil so i’m not sure if i would get good advice and prices from a dedicated furniture market. I would really appreciate if someone can give me some inputs and tips on how to go about buying furniture in Chennai.

I’m not looking for high end premium stuff. I would like to preferably buy both Dining set and Sofa under a lac rupees.

Thanks in advance.

Royapettah is the best place for buying furnitures. You would get old used or even antique best quality furnitures from there. Since you ’re going to spend a lakh +. Take your carpenter (The experienced carpenter you know) with you and pay him 1-2k. He will happily help you to pick the best one from his experience.

For 1 lakh+. I would suggest you to go for antiques. It will last long (even through your life time) than the new shiny machine made mediocre quality furnitures.

@cybertechie
bro if u don’t want to involve in bargaining pls visit Sarvana Furniture Stores in T-Nagar. They have vast collection of furnitures. and delivery is free depends on location.
They don’t have warranty system which other stores gives by charging more. And sometime other stories ask for service charges even in warranty.
Make a shopping according to your needs and comfort..
Enjoyy

@Magus

After going through the prices on fabfurnish and urban ladder, 1 lac seems to be just about adequate for a decent 3+1+1 sofa and dining set.

thanks for posting this on dedicated thread. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. I did not know that Sarvana store operated a Furniture store. Couple of years back i visited their main store and prices were excellent. Will check the place out ASAP and see what they have to offer

Thanks for the suggestion. Although antique furniture’s are excellent choice and more durable however it is not my first preference. I prefer modern furniture’s. Most of the furniture’s on urban ladder suits my taste.

I particularly liked your suggestion to take a carpenter with me however since i hardly know anyone in this city, most likely the carpenter i choose will take me for a ride.

bro Best 3+1+1 sofa cost around 25k and 6 seater dining will cost 20K around.

For soft and dining set pls sit and see how comfortable it is. Specially on sofa. How it supports neck and back.

if u go for 3+1+1 corner sofa, corner portion goes as waste. see if you get a storage space in the corner (only if u r selecting that).

impotent thing is before visiting store see the dimension of room so that things can be placed perfectly. I have seen many cases where sofa went out to be bigger then room later there was no space for movement. and eventually people went for selling on OLX for more price.

if u want u can buy 3+1 also in SS.

there are 2 Sarvana furniture stores in T nagar, 1. Ranganatha street and 2. Gopathi Narayanaswami road (near panagal park)

All the best..

@cybertechie Royapettah high road is the place you have to go to. There is a shop on the corner – AMIN furniture – They have good sofas. But, I don’t know about dining tables.

I bought 3+1+1, 4months back and it costed me 40K.

P.S.: I can’t speak Tamil too. But, I could manage because most of the sellers there, understand/communicate Hindi as well.

Thanks for the input @dealmate and @awsum

@awsum

If it’s not a lot of trouble, would you mind sharing a pic of the Sofa set you bought? Would love to see the kind of Sofa Royapettah offers for 40k.

Can you recommend a few shops with Fixed prices? As i have mentioned in my first post, being a non Tamil speaker puts me at a disadvantage when it comes to bargaining

Arey.. you are so worried about this language thing. Tamilians cheat only other Tamilians. They respect most others. And if you are fair skinned, they will give you a royal service. So, don’t worry. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

Jokes apart, how long have you been in Chennai? Have you not got any Tamil friends yet? Any “trusted” neighbours ( so hard to get in Chennai, of course https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif )?
Moreover, I don’t know anything about Royapetah furniture shops but most of the cloth merchants in Sowkarpet are north Indians. So, I guess they should form a considerable part of furniture merchants too.

It’s been 5 days since i’m here. I’m just here for just a month.
I do know a few neighbors here. Let me speak to them so get their perspective . Trust me, I find people here in south much more trust worthy than the folks i have dealt with in some other parts of the country.
